Darlington Parklands

Darlington Parklands stepping stones over the water

Darlington Parklands is dubbed by many as one of Logan’s ‘super parks’ and, when it comes to toddler-friendly fun, it’s not hard to see why. As a parent with a toddler, the parklands are a favourite – mostly due to the scale and variety of play spaces here that are suitable for them to explore. If you are planning to visit here, be sure to pack for a full day, as the kids will no doubt be too excited to experience all the parklands have to offer to want to leave.

Although the toddler playground that comes complete with fort, sand pit and musical wall is the perfect place to start, they will soon discover the large (and FREE) water park that is also located here. Safe for little ones, the water play area contains fountains, spouts and jets, as well as zero-depth splash pads and shallow pools to cool down in. There are plenty of wide-open, grassed areas to set up a picnic on while they run free, and even a wetlands boardwalk you can explore with them when they are done playing.

For toddlers, there are swings, a multi-person spinner, and a bright yellow slide which cascades down a hillside. They can also have some fun as they try to balance on and leap between the rubber domes. The small learn-to-ride circuit is a good size for beginning riders and little ones on scooters.

It’s already home to some impressive playgrounds however this might just be the best yet! According to the developers of Yarrabilba, billubera means ‘a clear sky or fine day’  in Yugambeh language. We think there will be many fine days at this fantastic playscape for years to come.

Billubera park Yarrabilba view from climbing tower

Billubera Park Playground

There really is something for everyone at Billubera park playground. The main structure with two towers and a 10 metre long suspended maze bridge is instantly inviting while also blending in harmoniously with the surrounding mature eucalyptus trees. There are multiple access points including a solid stair case and a rope climb, and slides out at different heights. This will allow Brisbane Kids to engage with this structure at their own comfort levels. The bravest kids can be suspended in the enclosed wobbly nets set amongst the tree tops before taking one of the 4.5 metre tunnel slides back down. There’s also a fireman’s pole and open slide from a lower platform for children looking for a quick exit.

Near the bottom of the slides are spinners, a climbing slope with steep steps and a cargo net and other fun elements built into the soft fall wall. This leads up to a lovely long flying fox. From the main climbing structure, you can see a pentagonal swing frame so that children can swing by themselves or facing towards their siblings or friends. This is also next to a fantastic ninja course complete with solar powered stop watch and a warped wall. Most of the obstacles are made from natural elements which fit in harmoniously with the natural environment and also provide interesting textural features.

There’s also a lower level to this park that features a climbing fort designed with toddlers and preschoolers in mind. There’s a nest swing, a four way bouncy seesaw and a wheelchair accessible spinning platform with a bar that’s set level with the soft fall base. Down a further level again is a 3 way basketball court. There is also a large grassy field at the bottom on the hill with wide cement paths that wind around, perfect for children to kick a ball or ride their scooters or bikes.

Billubera park Imagination Factor

This playground is set amongst towering trees and there’s a definitely forest feel here. The main structure is decorated with tree trunk art which adds to the feeling of climbing into the tree tops for an adventure. The ninja course is designed to engage children to challenge themselves to make it further through the obstacles and ultimately get new personal best times, or challenge each other to see who can make it further without slipping or make it through the obstacles fastest. There are information plaques throughout the playground to inform visitors about various native animals which children can then pretend to be.

There are different balancing elements such as logs and large rocks throughout the playground – some children might like to play ‘the floor is lava’ and see how far they can travel without touching the ground.

Accessibility at Billubera Park

There are lovely, wide cement paths throughout Billubera Park, and the nest swing and spinner have been located on a soft fall level next to the cement paths with accessibility in mind. There are bark chips below much the equipment.

While it’s located on a relatively quiet suburban street, it’s important to note that this playground is unfenced. Due to the trees, the size of the playground, and its design to fit on several levels on a slope, it may be difficult to keep a line of sight on multiple children.

There is a toilet block here with an accessible toilet, including baby change facilities.

Billubera park Yarrabilba stair access to main structure

What we thought of Billubera Park

We loved the multiple ways to access the suspended bridge. Sometimes, our kids can feel scared to climb up ropes, but they still want to enjoy the big slides, so the solid stair and platform climb option is an excellent inclusion here!

The ninja course is fantastic, and we haven’t seen anything else quite like it. Having a separate area with equipment designed for little adventurers is a great idea. However, due to its size and the stepped design to fit the hillside location, it might be tricky keeping track of multiple children in this playground.

There’s heaps of shade here over much of the playground from the trees and from shade covers and sails, but the ninja course is mostly in the open and the basketball courts are in full sun for much of the day.

We love the inclusion of natural elements here and we think toilet blocks and barbecues are a must! It was also great to see public power points at some of the shelters.

Playground at Brosnan Drive Park.

Brosnan Drive Park is a playground with the usual structures to swing, climb and slide on but is also a space which incorporates fun sensory elements and opportunities for unstructured nature play

Throughout the park there are multiple textured surfaces to explore: bumpy river-stones embedded in concrete (which is actually a reflexology path), artificial grass, textured timber steps, soft sand and fallen organic material on the ground (leaves, branches, bark).

Sand, sandstone blocks and shade at Brosnan Drive Park.

Large sandstone blocks are perfect for climbing, balancing and hopping along or perhaps even sitting on to take a moment and appreciate your surroundings. A vertical leaf sculpture is also available for children who love to climb.

Bring your sand toys, trucks and garden fairies as the soft sand and organic material is great for building and creating.

Sand, sandstone blocks and shade at Brosnan Drive Park.

For older Brisbane Kids who like a ball game, there is a basketball half-court and lots of open green space to kick a ball or throw a frisbee.

There is a covered picnic hut, table/chairs and BBQ if you are planning to stay a bit longer, but don’t forget – there are NO TOILETS.

Imagination Factor at Brosnan Drive Park

Pebbles in concrete and sensory play surfaces at Brosnan Drive Park.

Brosnan Drive Park is a fabulous place to explore creativity, nature and sensory play. Fill a bucket with water from the water station, collect leaves, pods, twigs and rocks to make nature inspired art. Maybe make some mud pies and set up a cafe on the sandstone blocks.

Extend your child’s play by bringing along a few items from home like a magnifying glass, binoculars, a camera or even a book.

Accessibility at Brosnan Drive Park

Covered picnic shelter at Brosnan Drive Park.

Brosnan Drive Park is a relatively flat space after the initial slight decline, with some concrete paths, a fenced dog park nearby and street parking.

Trees provide natural shade and there is a bench seat, plenty of sandstone blocks to sit on and a picnic hut with a table and BBQ.

Unfortunately though this is an unfenced playground with no toilet facilities, making long periods of play here difficult.

Brosnan Drive Park Features

  • Sensory and nature play area
  • NO Toilets
  • Natural shade from established trees
  • Base – sand, grass, concrete paths
  • Fort with a slide, ladders, climbing nets and tunnels
