Full of adventure, learning to explore, and curious about different play environments they encounter, a young child can spend hours at a playground if we let them. So, what are the best playgrounds for toddlers in Brisbane? We have gone through our collection and found the playgrounds that we think best suit a toddler’s age and ability. Whether that is because it is fenced to hold little ones in safely, has toddler-sized play equipment, or has facilities and play areas that best support their needs, this is our list of the best playgrounds in Brisbane for toddlers.

Thornlands Community Park, Thornlands

Thornlands Community Park

Thornlands Community Park hits the top of our list of toddler-friendly playgrounds in Brisbane for so many reasons. The playground itself is new, huge, and super impressive – the designers have thought of everything when it comes to family-friendly play equipment.

For toddlers in particular, the space is perfectly set up for them. Small, low-to the ground play cubbies mean they can easily navigate them on their own and fuel their imaginative play at the same time. The soft-fall base, shade sails, and wide open spaces between play equipment makes it the perfect environment for them to explore safely too. There are sand dinosaur digs, water play, tunnels to climb, swings, and so much more that they will absolutely love.

Oh – did we mention that the whole park is fenced (with toilets and change areas inside too)?!

Why we think it’s one of the best playgrounds in Brisbane for toddlers: The reasons are almost countless! The park is fully fenced, has toilets / change areas on site, features toddler-sized play equipment, water, and nature play facilities, as well as soft-fall flooring, and it is widely spaced.

Ascot Park, Ascot

Allowing a toddler their independence while playing is what parents look for in a playground, and Ascot park delivers this in bucketloads. Created with toddlers in mind, the playground is fully-fenced and all of the play equipment has been built low to the ground. The soft-fall base and spaced out play equipment means the area is never too busy or overwhelming for little people to navigate on their own.

The playground itself has some delightful cubbies, with one actually having the front half of a truck at one side. There is a water pump, plenty of seating for parents and toilets nearby too.

Why we think it’s one of the best playgrounds in Brisbane for toddlers: With all the equipment built low to the ground and the entire playground being fully-fenced, Ascot Park’s cute little play spaces, cubbies, and maze are perfect for toddlers.

Oriel Park, Ascot

Toddler swing and playground in background at Oriel Park.

Another Ascot park that gets our vote for being extremely toddler-friendly is Oriel Park. I remember spending many hours here when my kids were young, sitting quietly on a bench beneath the shady trees and sipping a coffee from the nearby cafe while my toddlers delighted in racing around between each of the different play areas.

Being fully-fenced means you don’t have to be one step behind them the whole time and the play equipment is all the perfect size for them to navigate on their own. The old steam tractor with slide is always a huge hit too.

Why we think it’s one of the best playgrounds in Brisbane for toddlers: This park is simple, but beautifully spaced for toddlers. It’s not overwhelming with fancy equipment, and the playground features play areas that a toddler will love and at a size they can navigate on their own. The area is canopied by shady trees, is fully-fenced, and has plenty of space for toddlers both within the playground and outside of it to run around.

Features:

  • Fenced playground
  • Accessible toilet facilities
  • Play equipment under shade sails and shady trees
  • Bark base
  • Rope climbing structures
  • Castle forts

  • Electric BBQs
  • Picnic tables
  • Park gym equipment
  • Street parking
  • Café and shops across the road

Roma Street Parkland, Brisbane

Playground and red spinner surrounded by gardens at Roma Street Parklands.

Although the two playgrounds found at Roma Street Parkland are not actually fenced, we have still listed it as one of our favourites. In fact, the entire parkland is just such a wonderful play space for toddlers. Not only is there suitable play equipment for little ones at both playgrounds, but there are plenty of lovely big manicured lawns to roll on, gardens and flowers to exclaim at, pram-friendly pathways, a vegetable garden, a worm farm, and even a trackless train that meanders throughout the parklands. Toddlers (and their whole family) will love it!

Why we think it’s one of the best playgrounds in Brisbane for toddlers: Once inside, there is a full day of fun that can be found at Roma Street Parkland. Pack a picnic and spend the day alongside one of the children’s playgrounds, marvel at the worm farm, have a ride on the trackless train, or simply stoll (or scooter) along the many wide forest pathways.

Located in the heart of the Brisbane City Botanic Gardens, this playground is a perfect play area for toddlers and younger children. Toddlers will love the digging pit, sensory activities, and musical chimes found here, as well as the duck-filled pond and fairy lit trees that are also part of this beautiful, spacious, and green inner-city park.

Why we think it’s one of the best playgrounds in Brisbane for toddlers: We love the wide walkways of the main fort playground at the Brisbane City Botanic Gardens Playground, as well as the low play equipment and sensory/nature play aspects. The adjacent expansive lawns are perfect for little people to run and play on, and the duck pond, gardens, and fairy lit trees will add even more wonder to their day.

Milton Park Playground, Milton

play train.

For any little train enthusiast, Milton Park Playground offers everything a toddler could want – with its very own train too! The hero of this fully-fenced playground, the replica train has a ladder, slide, stairs, and even a fireman pole attached – all at a size compatible with toddlers and early walkers. The train itself is quite spacious and affords the room for toddlers to wander through a carriage, sit as a passenger, or head straight to the front to play pretend as the train driver.

Other playground features include a railway crossing, petrol station, play cafe for a quick stopover, and various transport-related signs. The park itself is quite compact and sheltered by shady trees, which means parents can actually relax and easily keep and eye on their toddler while they do so.

Why we think it’s one of the best playgrounds in Brisbane for toddlers: We love that this Milton Park Playground is fully-fenced, is shaded and compact, and has the delightful train-theme throughout. New Farm Park Playground, New Farm

Dragon rockers and wooden fort at New Farm Park.

New Farm Park Playground is unfenced and is always very busy – something that would normally deter us from adding it to a toddler-friendly playground list. But this playground is just so magical, enchanting, and perfectly built for little ones that your toddler would be missing out if they didn’t get the chance to explore it!

Built seamlessly into the roots of the giant fig trees that surround it, this wooden fort playground will attract little ones just as much as the purpose-build ‘toddler’ playground nearby. Low to the ground, with wide access, and with plenty of nooks and crannies to weave in and out of, it’s no wonder this playground and surrounding park are amongst the most popular for families in Brisbane.

Why we think it’s one of the best playgrounds in Brisbane for toddlers: New Farm Park Playground’s wide spaced and low-built wooden fort built into the trees is like a low-lying tree house that toddlers will love. There is also an actual toddler playground for tiny ones, as well as picnic lawns, toilets, other play equipment, and so much more to love about this park too.

Hills District All-Abilities Playground, Arana Hills

The Hills District All-Abilities Playground is not only all-inclusive, but it’s perfect for toddlers too. Fully-fenced, the playground features a delightful bee theme throughout and has a wide range of toddler-designed play equipment.

Small, soft hills house slides, and a tiny cubby lends itself well to imaginative play, with a farmer’s market and café theme. The playground is easily accessible for toddlers to move about independently, yet big enough for pre-schoolers too. We also love that the it’s on a sand base and has a watercourse near it that’s frequented by ducks. A lovely bike track also circles the playground.

Why we think it’s one of the best playgrounds in Brisbane for toddlers: This is a wonderful toddler park due to it being fully-fenced and featuring a wide variety of toddler-friendly play equipment. nature play playground in karawatha park

When it comes to nature play playgrounds for kids, you really can’t go past Karawatha Forest Park. Not only is it an important wildlife haven, but the park is also home to a fascinating Discovery Centre, numerous walking tracks, two picnic areas, and an awesome nature play space.

Why we think it’s one of the best playgrounds in Brisbane for toddlers: Fully nature-based, this playground will have your child immersed in nature. Queens Park Playground & Nature Centre, Ipswich

queens park playground water pump

While it’s not strictly located in Brisbane, Queens Park in Ipswich is located less than 30 minutes away and is well worth the quick journey there. The playground here is not fenced, but the green spaces that surround it are generous and make for a wonderful place to set up for a picnic while your little one explores the area around them. There is a wonderfully long water play route that toddlers will delight in racing leaves down, as well as plenty of play equipment spread out over a large space.

The main reason we love this park though is because of the Nature Centre (situated within the grounds) that is full of native animals your toddler will love, as well as featuring wide pram-friendly pathways that area easy to navigate and a gold-coin donation fee only to enter.

Why we think it’s one of the best playgrounds in Brisbane for toddlers: A one-stop shop when it comes to a full day of toddler fun, Queens Park features a wonderful playground with water play, wide grassy fields to run on, a fabulous on-site cafe, and an incredible nature centre/zoo full of delightful native animals and birds that your toddler will adore.

What We Thought of Logan Gardens Park

Poles and shade sails over water play area at Logan Gardens Park.

The play areas are centred around the Logan Water Park so if you are visiting on a warmer day, be prepared for your Brisbane Kids to want to get wet.

We loved the natural elements including the sandstone blocks and stepping and balancing logs that twist up the sides of hills and between the roots of trees, blurring the boundaries between the natural and built environments and adding a real sense of whimsy and fun.

We thought the space felt inviting with a climbing net and a play treehouse structure which has climbing walls, a slide, bridge and lower-level activities perfect for tiny hands.

Joe Bradfield Centre Park https://brisbanekids.com.au/joe-bradfield-centre-park/ https://brisbanekids.com.au/joe-bradfield-centre-park/#respond Sun, 08 Oct 2023 04:02:05 +0000 https://brisbanekids.com.au/?p=319648 The Joe Bradfield Centre Park has something for everyone. The fully fenced Maud Walker Playground and learn to ride track, as well as tennis courts, basketball courts, cricket nets, lots of open green space, accessible toilets and a fenced dog park.

Joe Bradfield Centre Park Playground

The Maud Walker Playground is naturally shaded by big mature trees and shade sails, making it a terrific space any time of the day. The playground features climbing equipment, a slide, tunnel, bridge and play stations for small Brisbane Kids.

Slide, monkey bars and other play equipment at Joe Bradfield Centre Park.

Joe Bradfield Scooter Park

But perhaps the biggest drawcard is the learn-to-ride area. This flat surface is perfect for beginners and has just enough turns and intersections to amuse them. The traffic lights and road signs spark imaginary play and allow essential discussion around road safety.

Unlike many other Brisbane scooter parks, this is on a flat bitumen surface minus the usual obstacles that can make things tricky for younger kids. We also like that the track is quite condensed, focusing on the basics like tight turning circles, rights and lefts and patience in waiting for other rides to pass by.

Traffic track with signs and lights at Joe Bradfield Centre Park.

Traffic tracks with lights and signs at Joe Bradfield Centre Park.

Outside the fenced area, there are two tennis courts, two cricket nets/pitches, two basketball/netball courts and plenty of open green space. The courts are council owned and therefore everyone can use them. Accessible toilets are located between the fenced playground and dog park.

Basketball court and tennis courts at Joe Bradfield Centre Park.

Imagination Factor at Joe Bradfield Centre Park

There is so much for Brisbane Kids to do at the Joe Bradfield Centre Park. Smaller kids can practice their scooter and bike skills on the flat track or play on the wooden climber. The traffic lights and road signs will probably spark some imaginary play and give opportunity for basic discussion around road safety.

Bigger kids will enjoy shooting hoops on the full-size basketball court, hitting a ball on the tennis courts and practicing their cricket skills in the nets.

Accessibility at Joe Bradfield Centre Park

Seating at Joe Bradfield Centre Park.

The fully fenced Maud Walker Playground is great for smaller Brisbane Kids. Most of the playground is shaded by large trees and shade sails. The flat asphalt paths within the playground are designed for scooting/bikes.

The other courts: basketball, tennis and cricket are hard, flat surfaces with little shade. There is plenty of street parking and a nearby fence dog park. There are accessible toilets.

Joe Bradfield Centre Park Features

  • Fenced playground
  • Learn to ride with traffic lights and signs
  • Accessible toilets
  • Wood chip and asphalt base
  • Lots of big trees providing natural shade as well as shade cloth
  • Slide
  • Tunnels
  • Monkey bars
  • Seesaw
  • Basketball/netball courts
  • Cricket nets
  • Tennis courts
  • Grassed areas
  • Water station
  • Rubbish bins
  • Carina Library adjoins the park
  • Street parking on Nyrang Street
  • Nearby fenced dog park

Another nearby playground is Carindale Recreation Reserve or Whites Hill Reserve

What We Thought of Joe Bradfield Centre Park

Small play equipment and rocker at Joe Bradfield Centre Park.

We love heading to Joe Bradfield Centre Park; it is a great place to practice and gain confidence riding and scooting. When the kids tire of riding, they can play on the playground or run around and kick a ball.

One of the redeeming features of this park is the large amounts of natural shade, which always gets a big tick of approval from us.

Basketball and netball courts at Joe Bradfield Centre Park.

There is plenty of grassy areas in the park, perfect to lay down a picnic rug, so make sure you pack the snacks and enjoy the peaceful setting. Oh and don’t forget the balls – shooting some hoops on the basketball courts, having a hit of cricket in the nets or a game of tennis is always fun.

Bunnings Playgrounds https://brisbanekids.com.au/bunnings-playgrounds/ https://brisbanekids.com.au/bunnings-playgrounds/#respond Wed, 20 Sep 2023 06:45:44 +0000 http://brisbanekids.com.au/?p=7262 Are you looking for a fenced playground near a café with free, fun activities to entertain your kids? Look no further than Bunnings. With indoor fenced playgrounds and D.I.Y. projects designed just for children, your kids will have a blast learning handy new skills while you enjoy a coffee.

Bunnings Playgrounds

Fenced playground for kids at Bunnings.

There is a fenced playground in many of the larger Bunnings stores spread throughout Queensland. The playground is usually located next to the Bunnings café and close to the garden section.

Most Bunnings playgrounds are of a similar design, featuring a contained climbing fort with a series of connected tunnels upon a rubber soft fall base. A viewing bubble is often found at the top of the fort, shaped like a spaceship. Here, children can wave to mum and dad down below.

A spiral tunnel slide adds a bit of excitement to the experience as kids swirl their way back down.

Low to ground noughts and crosses in Bunnings playground.

Most Bunnings playgrounds will also have some ground-level game panels to interact with; these vary from store to store. Accessible toilets can usually be found close to the playground and café.

Bunnings’ playgrounds are fenced and fitted with child-safe locks; however, parents or guardians must supervise children in the playground at all times as they are not supervised by Bunnings staff. The playgrounds are recommended for children aged 4-12 years old.

Bunnings Hardware Café

Hardware cafe at Bunnings.

Larger stores which house a playground will typically also contain a café. The café has barista-made coffee and other hot drinks. Cold bottled beverages are also available.

A selection of pre-prepared food items like wraps, quiches, cakes and cookies can be purchased. Tables and chairs provide a comfortable place to eat.

Some Bunnings stores even provide a selection of board games to use in the café.

Kids D.I.Y. Workshops

Free Tiny Tradies workshop sign at Bunnings.

Kids can have fun on the weekends or during the school holidays and get creative at one of the free D.I.Y. workshops for children.

Hosted at Bunnings, your Brisbane Kids can join the fun and make exciting projects such as toolboxes, decorated calico tote bags or magic wands. Bunnings offers activities of different themes that regularly change, ranging from garden and woodworking to mosaics and recycled art and craft.

There are cooking classes for little chefs, while junior gardeners can learn how to plant vegetable seeds to start their own edible gardens.

Workshops are also regularly held before special events like Easter, Christmas, Mother’s Day and Father’s Day.

These workshops are ideal for most children aged between 3-12 years old, though we recommend checking the fine print before you attend. A parent or guardian must accompany the child during the workshop and remain in-store.

How to Book a Bunnings Workshop

DIY workshop sign at Bunnings.

If you want to browse workshops and/or make a booking, visit the Bunnings website and search for your local store. From the store information tab, select “More details,” then scroll down the page. Under the heading “Find & book a workshop or activity,” you can search for what is available in your area. Please note that spaces in all classes are limited.

Kids D.I.Y. videos

If you cannot visit a Bunnings store, let your kids get creative with their own D.I.Y. project at home. Bunnings has a selection of simple kids’ craft and D.I.Y. videos available for free on their website. There’s something to suit all ages and skill levels. Pelican Park in Clontarf https://brisbanekids.com.au/pelican-park-clontarf/ https://brisbanekids.com.au/pelican-park-clontarf/#comments Tue, 12 Sep 2023 03:47:58 +0000 https://brisbanekids.com.au/?p=242 Pelican Park, overlooking Bramble Bay boasts two inviting playgrounds, a Liberty Swing, vast grassy areas and a boat ramp. Make sure to pack your hat and sunscreen as you might find your Brisbane Kids enjoying this park all day long!

Pelican Park playgrounds

The expansive park affords locals and visitors a great location to be outdoors, enjoying the fresh sea air and sunshine. Smooth, wide footpaths meander along the waterfront, linking two playgrounds that invite Brisbane Kids of all ages to play, offering them a seaside adventure.

The vast grassy area between the playgrounds is the perfect canvas for flying a kite, it is also a quiet place to relax and unwind.

Pelican Park is an ideal location for a picnic or barbeque as it has ample facilities conveniently located close to the playgrounds including sheltered tables, electric barbeques and ample parking.  Nearby is a café and takeaway food options, along with a bait and tackle shop for added convenience.

Beach Theme Playground

Play equipment under shade sails at the beach playground at Pelican Park.

The older of the two playgrounds is of a beach theme, located next to the boat ramp. While simple in structure, it will have kids climbing, balancing and sliding. The curved monkey bars will test the agility of those who cross them.

Little ones will enjoy the pelican and dolphin spring rockers and bucket swing.

This playground is fully fenced and overhead a large shade sail provides plenty of shade.

Liberty swing at Pelican Park

Close by is a wheelchair-accessible Liberty Swing. In order to gain access, a key to unlock the fence can be obtained from Council. Without a doubt, this swing will bring a sense of freedom, and joy while soaring through the fresh sea air. The overhead sail provides shade to the swing and surrounding area.

Bike racks, ample sheltered picnic tables with water fountains and electric barbeques are next to the playground. Toilet facilities, including an accessible room with a nappy change table are close by as well.

Pirate Ship Themed Playground

The back of the ship play structure at the ship playground at Pelican Park.

Take a walk (or ride), past the boat ramp, along the bay, to the pirate ship themed playground.  With a sand base, this partially fenced playground will bring much excitement to young buccaneers.

As kids step aboard the ship via the stairs, ladder or climbing nets, they will embark on a seaside adventure, discovering the many cannons, wheels, and binoculars. Below deck, are climbing ropes, mini hammocks, a bubble window and treasure box.

Grey tunnel slide at the ship playground at Pelican Park.

Two slides (regular and tunnel), along with two poles will make for a swift, speedy decent back to land.

Little kids will enjoy the offerings below deck, and with adult assistance will be able to board the pirate ship and look out to sea as well.

Continuing the seaside theme is a small sand station with a fixed scoop where little ones can enjoy sand play. A shark and dolphin seesaw will rock and rollick, unbalancing anyone who dares to stand on the middle plank.

Tipi carousel at the ship-themed playground at Pelican Park.

A tipi carousel invites kids to lay, sit or stand and spin, while a trio of swings allow kids to sway back and forth, mirroring the gentle ebb and flow of the water. The large sail and nearby tree canopy provide shade to this play area.

Next to the playground are sheltered picnic tables with water fountain and electric barbeques. Two accessible car parking bays are located in the adjacent car park and toilets are located a short walk away.

Sea-themed wooden sculptures at the ship-themed playground at Pelican Park.

Imagination Factor at Pelican Park

Limitless possibilities for open, imaginative play can result in fishing, pirates, mermaid and mermen embarking on a variety of seaside adventures.

Brisbane Kids will love looking out for the ships offshore, while aboard their own ‘ship’ in one of the playgrounds. Brisbane Kids can also do some pretend or real fishing, and if you don’t catch anything, there’s a fish and chip shop nearby! It’s also a beautiful spot for shell collecting and hunting for pirate treasure!

Accessibility at Pelican Park

Toilet block at Pelican Park.

The layout and facilities of Pelican Park make it a location where families can relax and enjoy a seaside outing.

Ample parking (including accessible bays) is available at both playground locations. Smooth, wide footpaths link the playgrounds and surrounding areas and are suitable for prams, bikes, scooters and wheelchairs.

The Liberty Swing offers a serene location where inclusivity and the sea come together. The only accessible toilet is located next to the Beach themed Playground.

With beach inspired forts, slides, sand play and brilliant water views, this is definitely a playground to visit at any time of the year.

Lota Park Playground

Lota Park (AKA Fig Tree Point Park) is a fun, beachy local park on Lota Esplanade. It is a good alternative to the popular Wynnum water park on the Bayside and doesn’t get as busy (though it is still very popular).

Fully fenced Lota Park.

The playground, which is both toddler and older Brisbane Kid friendly features forts, slides, rockers and fabulous climbing opportunities.

The sand base allows for a soft landing and plenty of sand play if you bring your own toys (or maybe just use your hands).

For those looking to get a little more energetic there is outdoor fitness equipment and plenty of grassy areas surrounding the playground for running games.

Gated entrance to the playground at Lota Park.

The playground at Lota Park is now fully fenced, which is alway great if you are visiting with multiple children or children that can move quickly. It is a colourful and inspiring playground with lovely sea views. Oh and did we mention you can get delicious fish and chips from across the road at Barts!

Lota Park has accessible toilets, barbeques and undercover seating, making it a great destination for a little picnic, party or extended playdate

Imagination Factor at Lota Park

Red slide and play equipment at Lota Park.

This fantastic modern playground features several awesome forts which are built to look like beach huts. Little ones can pretend they are on a beach holiday, playing house or perhaps just have fun playing hide and seek.

The sand play options are endless. Perhaps trucks will race through the sand, maybe little explorers will dig a hole or build a sandcastle – just don’t forget to bring you sand play toys!

Accessibility at Lota Park

Shade sails over playground and water views at Lota Park.

The playground itself has a soft sand base and is fully fenced. There are shade sails covering some of the play equipment, however some equipment is unshaded. Outside the fenced playground there are some flat concrete paths for easy access.

George Clayton Park in Wynnum https://brisbanekids.com.au/george-clayton-park-in-wynnum-bayside-nautical-themed-playground/ https://brisbanekids.com.au/george-clayton-park-in-wynnum-bayside-nautical-themed-playground/#comments Wed, 09 Aug 2023 03:05:11 +0000 http://brisbanekids.com.au/?p=59244 Grab the buckets and shovels and get ready for ‘beach themed’ imaginative play at this recently renovated, fully fenced park in Brisbane’s East. George Clayton Park offers a popular nautical-themed playground suited to kids of all ages and abilities, which can be enjoyed all year round.

George Clayton Park playground

viewing tower at george clayton park

The Manly Wynnum Esplanade is home to the George Clayton Park – known to locals as, “The Lighthouse Park.” As the name suggests kids can enjoy traversing a miniature replica lighthouse. Intrepid travellers can head up the winding stairs and be treated to beautiful views over Moreton Bay when the reach the top.

The best part? As part of the recent renovations, council have added a special fence around the lighthouse for toddler’s safety. It’s now only accessible via a fenced gate, to ensure little ones can safely have an adult in tow before making the journey up to the top.

Blue skies at the fenced playground at George Clayton Park.

There are two pirate-themed playgrounds to enjoy at George Clayton Park.

The larger ship is suited to children ages 5-8 and comes packed with fun activities! From a pirate wheel to steer, a porthole to view scallywags and even a special escape route (the slide).

For adventurous children there’s even a flying fox to ‘walk the plank’ off the side of the ship. Kids will love jumping off the ship and zooming over the ‘ocean’ – thankfully there’s soft sand beneath, as there’s no landing platform on the other side.

Yellow slide from pirate themed play structure at George Clayton Park.

Kindy kids and smaller toddlers will delight in the second pirate ship, made with the little ones in mind. Peer out the periscope and keep your eyes peeled for mermaids. Underneath the play set is the ship’s galley where they can pretend to be cooking up a storm for the crew above.

If children want to put their feet up there are also three terrific swings nearby. One for older children, a tyre swing and an all-abilities swing.

Kids full of energy can bring their scooters or stroll along the esplanade across the street. Take in the beautiful bay views and why not treat yourself to a coffee along the way?

An all-abilities spinning play set is currently under construction and is due to open soon.

Imagination Factor at George Clayton Park

Bottom of the replica lighthouse at George Clayton Park.

Ahoy me hearties!  Brisbane Kids can live out their Captain Hook dreams at the pirate ship playgrounds at George Clayton Park.

Before your sailors ‘set sail’ they can test the barometer and determine what the weather will be like that day. According to the sign it might even be snowing in Brisbane – anything is possible when you’re playing make believe!

The kids will love climbing the replica lighthouse and offers a lovely gross motor challenge for smaller children.

Accessibility at George Clayton Park

Fence playground at George Clayton Park.

George Clayton Park has modern wheelchair-accessible toilet facilities.

Concrete paths are throughout the park area and along the waterfront ideal for walking, bike and scooter riding. It is also suitable for both wheelchairs and prams.

The playground equipment is suited to a variety of ages and abilities and is fully fenced. The waterfront is fenced from the adjacent walking path.

The flat grassy spaces surrounding the park, picnic shelters, electric barbeques and accessible toilet facilities make this an ideal bayside park for parties and picnics.

Please note: dogs are not permitted inside the fenced playground area.

George Clayton Park features

  • Fenced playground
  • Accessible toilets
  • Accessible carousel (currently being renovated)
  • Sand base
  • Shade sails and natural plant shade
  • Nautical themed playground
  • Two unique pirate ships
  • Flying fox from pirate ship
  • Unique replica lighthouse to climb

  • Balancing ladder bridge
  • Slides
  • Walking track
  • Bay views – across the street from Moreton Bay
  • Picnic shelters nearby
  • BBQ’s
  • Off street parking is available

Parents will also love the coffee van that sets up shop on the weekends.

Another great Brisbane Playground nearby is the popular Wynnum Whale Park or for those bringing their wheels, the Wynnum Skate Park and Playground.

What We Thought of George Clayton Park

Sea creatures of Moreton Bay play panel at George Clayton Park.

It goes without saying that we love a fully fenced playground, especially one that is by the water. The sand play element is always welcomed by our little Brisbane Kids, especially if you bring along some spades, buckets and trucks.

Climbing the lighthouse is also cool, especially looking out around the area to see what interesting things you can see. A great park for young families.

Waterfront Park in Newstead | Brisbane River-side Playground https://brisbanekids.com.au/waterfront-park-in-newstead-brisbane-river-side-playground/ https://brisbanekids.com.au/waterfront-park-in-newstead-brisbane-river-side-playground/#respond Tue, 08 Aug 2023 03:25:19 +0000 http://brisbanekids.com.au/?p=125849 Enjoy views of the Brisbane River while the kids run around the green open spaces and conquer the maritime themed playground at Waterfront Park in Newstead.

Waterfront Park Playground

Blue seesaw and spinner bucket at Waterfront Park.

Waterfront Park occupies a large area adjoining the Brisbane River, with lots of green space, big sculptures and bike/walking paths around the man-made lake (however, this didn’t have water when we were there).

There is a compact playground in one corner of the park that has a maritime theme, which has fun climbing equipment including large rock-climbing geometric shapes and a spinning structure for older Brisbane Kids.

Ship slide at Waterfront Park.

The tropical ocean liner or perhaps a pirate ship with a slide is well suited for younger kids. There is also a swing set with one standard and one baby swing, a seesaw, a smaller spinner and a joey swing.

If you are visiting the park with your furry friend, then they will be very pleased having a run around in the nearby fenced dog park.

Imagination Factor at Waterfront Park

Play equipment under shade sails in fenced area at Waterfront Park.

Younger Brisbane Kids will have fun playing captain of the ocean liner/pirate ship, or setting up a shop at the window underneath it.

Older kids can imagine they are mountaineers scaling the heights when climbing up the geometric shape sculptures, or acrobats flying through the air on the spinning structure.

When you are ready to explore the park further, a walk down to the riverfront to investigate the wharves (featuring disused tram tracks) can allow imaginations to run wild with thoughts of disembarking big ships for distant lands.

Accessibility at Waterfront Park

Picnic table at Waterfront Park.

The playground at Waterfront Park is fully fenced, which is always a bonus for visitors with multiple children or little ones who are fast on their feet.

Shade from shade sails and some surrounding trees provide some relief from the hot sun, making it a nice spot to visit at any time of the day.

While there are lots of wide paths throughout the park, there is no path leading directly to the playground. Due to the bark base, the playground is not particularly wheelchair or pram friendly either.

There are a number of sheltered picnic tables and barbecues around the park. Additionally, there are three toilets which include an accessible toilet and baby change facility.

Waterfront Park features

  • Fenced playground
  • Large park with green open space
  • Accessible toilets with baby change facilities
  • Shaded by shade sails
  • Bark base
  • River views
  • Climbing structures
  • Swings (including a baby swing and Joey swing)
  • Slide
  • Seesaw
  • Spinners
  • Sheltered picnic tables
  • Barbecues
  • Bike/walking paths
  • Nearby fenced dog park
  • Metered carpark spaces (one disabled parking space)

Another great nearby Brisbane Playground is New Farm Park at New Farm, or Bulimba Riverside Park across the river at Bulimba.

What We Thought of Waterfront Park

Joey swing at Waterfront Park.

Waterfront Park is a fun playground well suited for smaller Brisbane Kids to explore and release some energy. For us, any park with a Joey swing gets our thumbs up, as we love to sit facing our little one, watching their face as we swing higher and higher.

We also love the location close to the river for a walk, scooter or bike ride.

How to Get to Waterfront Park

Waterfront Park is located at 35 Waterloo Street, Newstead.

Sir John Chandler Park at Indooroopilly https://brisbanekids.com.au/sir-john-chandler-park-at-indooroopilly/ https://brisbanekids.com.au/sir-john-chandler-park-at-indooroopilly/#respond Tue, 01 Aug 2023 10:38:58 +0000 https://brisbanekids.com.au/?p=315624 It’ll feel like you’ve discovered a hidden treasure at Sir John Chandler Park. Perfectly located in the leafy inner western suburb of Indooroopilly, it is a fully fenced pirate ship playground with stunning views of the river.

The kids will have a ball on the modern equipment while parents are sure to appreciate the serenity of this expansive, green parkland located only 15 minutes from Brisbane city.

Sir John Chandler Park Playground

Fenced playground with shade sails at Sir John Chandler Park.

Sitting at the end of Meiers Road, adjacent to the Indooroopilly Golf Club, you’ll find a riverside oasis at Sir John Chandler Park.  There is plenty of room to run and play for the whole family including the friendly family dog.

A jacaranda tree lined path leads to a pirate themed playground in the centre of the parklands which feels right at home overlooking the twists and turns of the Brisbane River.

The pirate ship is packed with cool details like steering wheels, binoculars, cannons, treasure chests and other fun, educational games. True to the theme, little buccaneers can scale up a net ladder to enter the ship or smaller legs might find the stairs an easier alternative.

Pirate ship playground with slide at Sir John Chandler Park.

Underneath the ship at ground level are a pair of mini hammocks, a porthole window and musical instruments which are great toddler friendly inclusions. Accompanying the ship are some playground favourites including swing set, crab shaped see saw, shark bouncer and a UFO like seated spinner.

Apart from the fantastic looking playground, you’ll also immediately notice that it’s fully fenced which is particularly important given the playground backs onto the river.

Play panels on pirate ship at Sir John Chandler Park.

There are two picnic tables within the fence boundary so you can enjoy a picnic lunch knowing your Brisbane Kids are safe as they play. Additional picnic shelters are located at various spots throughout the parklands making this a great birthday party park.

Your four legged friends are also in for a treat with a massive, off leash dog area that runs almost the entire length of the park and allows for them to enjoy the space as much as you will.

OUR TOP TIP – Don’t forget to pack fire starting gear for the wood fired BBQs.

Imagination Factor at Sir John Chandler Park

Small child looking in binoculars at Sir John Chandler Park.

The pirate ship theme here is super obvious which gives children a nice prompt for pretend games and is an easy one for the parents to get involved. There’s so many features to engage little adventurers and the size of the multi-level ship leads to plenty of opportunities for collaborative play.

The park itself is a beautiful backdrop for nature play with rolling hills, river views, dozens of different tree species and ample space to explore the great outdoors.

Accessibility at Sir John Chandler Park

Picnic table in fenced area at Sir John Chandler Park.

The playground is located approximately 300 metres from the main car park and is connected via a concrete footpath. Most of the other picnic facilities are located off the path on relatively flat, grassy terrain. The only toilets are situated at the entrance to the car park so keep this in mind when visiting the playground.

Sir John Chandler Park Features

  • Fully fenced playground
  • Accessible toilets nearby
  • Soft fall and rubber base
  • Partially shaded
  • Pirate ship themed playground
  • Swings including toddler swing and nest swing

What We Thought of Sir John Chandler Park

We think Sir John Chandler Park Indooroopilly is a bit of a hidden gem with its fully fenced playground and lovely, shady surroundings. The park is so spacious it’ll seem like you have the whole place to yourself, especially during a midweek visit.

Put this one on your picnic spot list and enjoy the peacefulness of this riverside paradise.

Ascot Park

ascot park toddler playground

Suburb: Ascot

If you are looking for a fenced playground perfect for toddlers, then we suggest you add Ascot Park to your list. Whilst it has all the usual play equipment you would expect, we love the three small feature cubbies at its centre the most.

Built low to the ground for easy access for all ages, two cubbies have a market and garden theme with quaint vegetable stairs, a letterbox, a tunnel, slide, a hammock and interactive sensory boards. The third cubby has a fireman theme and even comes with a firetruck extension! The imaginative play options here are simply endless and we love that for our Brisbane Kids.

Along with the cubbies, Ascot’s generously spaced park includes a water play area, a flat grass maze, and even an awesome dual-facing lounger swing you rarely see. With plenty of shade from sails and trees and an open field, half basketball court and cafes outside of the fenced area, Ascot Park is one of our favourite fenced playgrounds in Brisbane.

Park Features

Spinnaker Park

sunny playground at newport, slide and shadesails

Suburb: Newport

This fantastic, nautical-themed playground (more affectionately known as Livvi’s Place) is located adjacent to Newport’s man-made lake. Easily spotted by the tall sail structure that towers over the playground, Spinnaker Park features ample play equipment to entertain kids of all ages.

The stand-out feature of this lovely waterside park is the sail-shaped climbing tower with its cargo netting ladders and slides that offer a birds-eye view of all the action below. Once a child ascends the rope ladder, there are two metal slides to choose from to get down – the super-fast one at the top, or the slightly slower one from the middle level.

There is a strong emphasis on balancing, scrambling, sliding, and active and challenging play throughout Spinnaker Park’s playground. Kids have ample opportunity to practice balancing on the rubberised balancing steps and mounds as they step, leap and jump from one to the other. They can test their climbing skills on the cargo netting or haul themselves up the rope on the slope on the hill.

Park Features

  • Fully fenced
  • Partially shaded with shade cloth
  • Accessible toilets

Another incredible fenced playground in Brisbane that has thought of everything and everyone is the Hills District All-Abilities Playground in Arana Hills.

Keeping things accessible, the park is large, its play equipment spaced out, and the flooring flat and soft. Kids will love the traditional features such as the see-saw, monkey bars, swings (including a supported harness swing) and rockers, but they will delight in some of the more unique structures in the playground. Imaginative play is well supported here, with the entire park displaying a clear bee theme.

The giant bee-hive climbing forts (one toddler-sized and one for older children), colourful farmers market, and cafe-themed cubbies are a highlight.

Sandstone Point Hotel Playground

Windmill and tanks at the Sandstone Point Hotel playground.

Suburb: Sandstone Point

Sandstone Point Hotel is a one-stop shop for family-friendly fun, a little bit further out from Brisbane but well worth the drive. The hotel boasts multiple restaurants and eating spaces, all with spectacular views down to the jetty and fish and chip Oyster Shed. Pristine green lawns stretch down the hill, and on weekends the space comes alive with soccer games, kids playing, and even jumping on their large trampoline.

You would think that with so much else to see and do here, the fenced playground alongside the hotel would hardly get a look in. The very opposite is true. The hugely popular farm-themed playground is one of the feature drawcards to the area. There is also a mini windmill, a farm-themed climbing castle with a rope bridge and slides, a trough and taps for water play, an old fashioned bucket and rope for transporting goodies up and down the fort and even a rainwater tank climbing structure too.
