You will find Woolcock Park at Red Hill behind Waterworks Road, along the Ithaca Creek Bike Route. Despite its proximity to a busy road, the reason why this playground is so popular is that it is quite protected from the bustling world around it, shady and peaceful.
Woolcock Park playground
Due to its close proximity to the Red Hill Special School, Woolcock Park’s rejuvenation has resulted in a ‘sensory’ design focus. With the smooth pebbled ‘Reflexology Walk’, solar-powered musical mushrooms and a hammock swing, this park is a wonderful and relaxing space for families. Other park features include a basketball half-court, a slide built into a hill, swings, nice flat walking and bike paths, leaf-shaped picnic tables and accessible toilet facilities. Whilst it does get quite popular, especially on the weekends, Woolcock Park is well worth a visit with your kids.
Local chatter does report a healthy population of nesting magpies. If it is magpie season and you plan to walk through Woolcock Park it may be worth taking an umbrella with you.
Imagination Factor
The sensory aspect of this park is nature-themed, encouraging lots of imaginary wildlife play. Younger kids can explore the bush and rocky reflexology path looking for local water dragons or ducks after rainy weather. Older Brisbane Kids will love flying down the slide and spinning through outer space on the spinning playground wheel.
Accessibility
Woolcock Park has wheelchair accessible toilet facilities and water fountains. It is also home to an awesome Liberty Swing. You will need to obtain the key for the Liberty Swing from Red Hill Special School (Ph. 3291 9333).
The shade sail covered playground is unfenced and is on a rubber base. There are bike and walking paths suited to wheelchair and pram use. Shady trees shelter lots of the park during the day. Tables and electric barbeques are located in mostly shaded areas. Check out our list of other Brisbane All Abilities Parks with Liberty Swings.
