Les Atkinson Park in Sunnybank is a spacious park over several hectares of greenspace offering the community a recreational space with a variety of uses.
At the heart of Les Atkinson Park is a lovely natural pond, home to a host of wildlife including ducks, turtles, and birds. There are two covered platforms at different vantage points on the pond that are the perfect place to watch the birds and keep a lookout for the resident turtles. Raised walkways lead from the back of the pond through a wetlands area. If you are there late in the afternoon you can spot bats high up in the trees.
This recreational green space also features several playgrounds with a variety of different playground equipment to ensure a fun day out for the entire family.
Les Atkinson Park playgrounds
On one side of the pond, there is a decent-sized playground that is partly shaded by shade sails and trees. The playground has a variety of equipment for kids of all ages. Toddlers will be kept entertained on the bouncy rockers and infant swings as well as the small play unit featuring a mini climbing wall and slide. For older children, there is a bull rider swing, gravity pole, scale seesaw and standard swings. Near the playground is a fitness area with a great range of new equipment for an outdoor workout. Next to the fitness area is covered dirt section for Brisbane Kids to practice riding their bikes or scooters.
There is also the recent addition of a sand-based playground which again features a range of climbing apparatus, slides and swings.
The Stones Road side of Les Atkinson Park has is a large playing field, rebound wall and basketball half-court.
Throughout the park there is plenty of open space for kids young and old to run, chase the birds and kick a ball around. The park has a network of concrete paths with the main path leading around to Pengana Playground on the corner of Beenleigh Road and Woff Street.
Pengana Playground
Pengana Playground is a sizable sheltered playground within Les Atkinson Park that Brisbane Kids will enjoy. A pedal-powered monorail encircles the play equipment with fort-like structures making up the main play area. There are 3 slides, monkey bars and lots of different climbing sections. Included in this area are swings, bouncy rockers and scale seesaw. Next to the playground are two sheltered picnic tables, electric barbeques and toilets. Across the open grassy area, there is a bridge over the creek that leads to more open space and a small skate bowl.
Imagination Factor
One of the highlights of Les Atkinson Park is a beautiful pond. Watching the birds, spotting turtles and feeding ducks are all lovely ways to pass the time. Please remember if you are going to feed the ducks, they do not eat bread, for more information on what to safely feed the ducks you can follow the links on our places to feed the ducks in Brisbane page. Take a ball and make the most of the open space or enjoy a bike ride along the paths.
In the Pengana Playground young adventures can cruise on the pedal-powered monorail track or create an obstacle course using the main play structures. Meanwhile, budding entrepreneurs can set up their business in the little shop window.
Accessibility
The small car park located on Beenleigh road has six parking spaces and one disabled parking spot. There is a single wheelchair accessible toilet located next to the car park and wide concrete paths run from the car park, in and around the park making Les Atkinson Park easily assessable by wheelchairs and prams. Near the playground are two covered tables with one electric barbecue in the middle. The playgrounds themselves are not accessible. The nearest train station is Sunnybank.
Pengana Playground has ample car parks along Woff Street as with paths leading to the sheltered tables, barbecues and toilets. There are three toilets, one with wheelchair access. The playground has a bark base and is encased by the monorail and so is not wheelchair accessible.
