  • AboutBrisbane Kids Creative was created by me! Ngaire Stirling. I wont pretend to talk in the third person about myself, instead let me tell you a bit about me and how 110.232.142.129/~brisba22 came about. At the time the domain name 110.232.142.129/~brisba22 came up for purchase I was a stay at home mum in the middle of a degree centred around journalism and PR. a couple of years earlier I had been contemplating returning to my previous career in marketing management and for a while I even tried. 3 months into a new role and it was clear that I had no passion for my old life and to make the decision to quit easier, my almost 2 year old at the time was not coping with childcare. So, as a family we made the decision for me to return to becoming a stay at home mum. About 1 years later or so.. 110.232.142.129/~brisba22 came up for sale. My friends had often commented on my ability to know exactly what was happening in Brisbane for kids. I had my son enrolled in some awesome activities and we often visited some great destinations. I loved finding fun things for us to do…

Grinstead Park Enoggera | Massive fort playground

Last updated: May 1, 2023

Grinstead Park at Enoggera is a popular Northside playground featuring an expansive fort playground, nature play area and learn-to-ride facility.  Surrounding play opportunities for older children make Grinstead Park the perfect destination for families with children of all ages.

Grinstead Park (also known as Shand Street Playground) is a massive play space for families with so many opportunities for exploration and play, while catering to children of all ages.

The standout for kids will be the impressive fort-style playground nestled under huge shade sails. It features swings, slides and various other activities for a range of abilities.  Standing balance swings, a large nest swing and a ‘shop’ add to the attraction of this impressively sized playground.

Grinstead Park offers many opportunities for bike riding, with paths leading all over the north of Brisbane and of course, an awesome learn-to-ride facility.

A multi-use court, nature play area, and outdoor fitness equipment are also a great addition to Grinstead Park. BBQ facilities, picnic shelters, park benches and lots of grassy open spaces, make Grinstead Park the perfect place to spend several hours and enjoy a picnic.

Learn-to-ride Facility

Speed humps surrounded by grass and trees at Grinstead Park learn to ride facility.

Opened in 2020 after a Brisbane City Council upgrade, the learn-to-ride facility at Grinstead Park is popular among young riders, whether they are cruising on their balance bike, trike, scooter or bicycle.

Located just a short distance from the main playground, joined by small bridge, the learn-to-ride facility will challenge little ones while also providing an opportunity for road safety education.

The bitumen paths feature many road signs, pedestrian crossings, a roundabout and speed humps, making it anything but boring when learning to ride. The facility is mostly flat, with the exception of the speed humps, and is surrounded by grass and a few trees, so if your rider does veer of course, they are less likely to injure themselves.

A covered picnic table, drinking fountain and bike rack is located beside the track, making a great spot for tired riders to rest and recover.

Nature Play Area

Located next to the main playground and picnic area, is a dedicated nature play area. The area features logs, many stepping-stones and a few friendly creatures hiding through the area (how many frogs can you find?)

As the name suggest the nature play area is in a natural setting, and as such the ground is uneven (rocks, leaves, logs, stones) and could also be home to wildlife. Encourage your little explorers to investigate, appreciate and respect nature and all it entails and have fun while doing so.

Sporting Opportunities

Scattered throughout Grinstead Park are several opportunities for play. Other than the massive playground and learn-to-ride facility, there is also a multi-use games court, rebound wall, outdoor fitness equipment, plenty of open space and a skate park nearby.

The multi-use games court features two basketball hoops at either end and line markings for several sports. There are poles for a net, which could be used for volleyball, though no net was visible on our visits. A low fence surrounds the court, with higher fences at either end, to reduce balls rolling away from the court.

Imagination Factor

Whether by rolling down the grassy hills or simply laying in the grass cloud-spotting, your Brisbane Kid can enjoy the masses of space on offer at Grinstead Park. The fort playground is perfect for playing pirates and princesses in castles. For slightly older Brisbane Kids, the bridge and adjacent grassy areas provide opportunities for adventures into the unknown and nature-spotting.

One thing that really stood out when we were there were the bird calls all around us, like we were standing in the middle of a forest and not in the middle of suburbia.

Accessibility

Grinstead Park has accessible toilet facilities and water fountains. The majority of paths are suited in part to wheelchair and pram use, however not all the paths are on flat ground. The playground is unfenced but shaded by giant shade sails throughout much of the day. The fort features access via a ramp and there are several activities suited to all abilities. There is a generous off-street carpark for convenience.

  • Unfenced playground
  • Fort-style playground under shade sails (mostly covered)

What we thought about Grinstead Park

This is one of the area’s most popular playgrounds, so getting a park can be challenging, especially on weekends and school holidays. You might need to park further up on Shand Street along the road. We don’t love the fact that it is so close to a main road but the engaging nature of the play space means you arent worried about it, but I think it would be nice if the council fenced it off in the future. What we love is the variety of play options, from the learn-to-ride track, the playground, the water play and the unique nature play area. We often visit Grinstead Park after seeing a movie at the nearby Reading Cinemas which offers affordable movies compared to some of the bigger theatres.
