We thought this park was a real treasure. We loved the mix of play and sporting options available in the one location.

The scooter track was a big hit with my four-year-old as it was a great mix of smooth flats and challenging obstacles he could choose to engage with or ride around.

I had no trouble finding parking on my visit but, due to its location I imagine parking could be difficult during busy times.

Barbaralla Park in Springwood https://brisbanekids.com.au/barbaralla-park-in-springwood/ https://brisbanekids.com.au/barbaralla-park-in-springwood/#respond Thu, 18 Jan 2024 03:34:02 +0000 https://brisbanekids.com.au/?p=348342 Barbaralla Park is a fun-filled park featuring a nature-inspired playground, basketball court, skate ramp, big shady trees and the all important toilets. Visiting families will be able to spend hours enjoying the peaceful surroundings, playing, exercising and relaxing.

Barbaralla Park Playground

Climbing net, tunnel slide and lookout fort at Barbaralla Park.

Barbaralla Park features a large climbing net which leads to an epic crows nest. Avid climbers can scale the net, take in the views, and descend via the covered, tunnel slide.

Nest swing at Barbaralla Park.

If the main equipment is a bit much for your little ones, they may enjoy the smaller, less challenging climbing net and fort designed with smaller Brisbane Kids in mind. This equipment is perfect for developing confidence and gross motor skills while still playing and having fun.

Obstacle course challenges will keep curious kids entertained as they climb, swing, spin, balance, jump and leap around the equipment. For those wanting to chill out and swing among the trees, a nest swing is available and always popular among the kids (and adults too).

Skate ramp at Barbaralla Park.

For older Brisbane Kids who like to bounce, shoot hoops and roll, the full-size basketball court and skate ramp will keep them happy. The skate area is suitable for skateboards, scooters and bikes and features ledges, rails, banks, and quarters.

If you are planning to stay a bit longer or perhaps host a party, there is a BBQ, water fountain, sheltered tables and toilets.

The playground is well-shaded and cooled by mature trees, although usual sun safety will still be needed.

Imagination Factor at Barbaralla Park

Stepping stones at Barbaralla Park.

Leap from one stepping stone to the next while weaving around the playground. Make an obstacle course and then have a grown-up keep score of times. Or, climb high up to the crows nest and keep a watchful eye over the playground.

Find leaves, bark, twigs and rocks to make a nature-inspired installation. Adults can enjoy relaxing under the large trees while looking up for birds and native wildlife

Accessibility at Barbaralla Park

Electric BBQ and picnic tables and seating at Barbaralla Park.

Barabella Park has accessible pathways from Watland Street into the playground; there is also parking on Shortland Street but no path.

Definitely bring the bikes to extend the play and make the most of this leafy natural space for some time with your kids.

Bellbowrie Skate Park

A fabulous skate park can be found in the nearby Stegeman Sporting Complex which is about 500 metres from the main Booker Place Park playground. You can walk between the two but unless your kids are old enough to ride the whole way or carry their own gear, it’s much easier to drive around to Sugarwood Street.

The newly refurbished skate park features traditional and street style equipment including a banked hip and ledge, a flow bowl transition section, a concrete roll-over and flow section, a free-standing quarter pipe and an adjoining scooter track.

We love this park for its its nature theme and lots of opportunities for climbing, running and sliding. The little ones love sitting on the ‘you and me’ swing facing mum or dad and enjoying lots of giggles.

The older children, who always have plenty of energy, bring their scooters and spend ages doing tricks at the skate park. Kicking a ball on the grassy space is always fun too.

Paddington Skate Park https://brisbanekids.com.au/paddington-skate-park/ https://brisbanekids.com.au/paddington-skate-park/#respond Sun, 03 Sep 2023 20:09:49 +0000 https://brisbanekids.com.au/?p=318827 The Paddington Skate Park, next to Suncorp Stadium, was one of the first street style parks built in Brisbane and for this reason has enjoyed a long run as the premier inner-city skate park to ride.

Paddington Skate Park

Kids skating and scootering at Paddington Skate Park.

Paddington Skate Park’s open design, which ebbs and flows around a central, shady tree and variety of obstacles gives it broad appeal right from confident grommets looking to test their skills all the way up to more seasoned skater boys and skater girls.

In mid-2017 the final touches to the council’s two stage upgrades were completed (reported to be worth a total of $1.18 million), which included refurbishments to the original park as well as the introduction of more obstacles.

Kids skating and scootering at Paddington Skate Park.

The newer concrete is now very smooth and fast with a green colour scheme that suits the natural surroundings. The main sections of the park include the large bank, the fun box in the centre (with a good combination of sloped and flat rails) and the new 5-foot-high, square-shaped bowl at the end.

There is seating available for spectators on the large, concrete stairs at the southern end of the bowl however a BYO chair seems to be the more popular and comfortable choice.

Paddington Skate Park Features

  • Pipes
  • Roll ins
  • Banks
  • Stairs
  • Bowls
  • Hips
  • Ledges and block
  • Fun box
  • Transitions
  • Rail combos
  • Night lighting

Other nearby facilities, including Neal Macrossan Park

Playground and trees at Neal Macrossan Park.

The skate park is joined by various other outdoor facilities, which makes this a go-to space for active, urban families.

We particularly love the Neal Macrossan Playground’s eclectic mix of equipment, from the brightly coloured helicopter and boat to the fully shaded, wooden ninja-style climbing course.

Playground at Neal Macrossan Park.

All the listed facilities are within the one fenced area that keeps little adventurers safe and gives parents and carers peace of mind.

  • Accessible toilets
  • Fully fenced Neal Macrossan Playground
  • Picnic shelters
  • Electric BBQ
  • Ithaca Swimming Pool – with a cafe selling coffee and treats
  • Tennis/basketball courts
  • Paddington Dog Park

How to Get to Paddington Skate Park

Paddington Skate Park is located at 113 Caxton Steet, Paddington QLD 4064.

On-street parking is available on the surrounding Moreton, Chrystal and Caroline Streets. Keep in mind that as the skate park is located right next to Suncorp Stadium it is subject to Lang Park Traffic Area restrictions during game days.

Public transport is another option, with bus and train stops conveniently located near Suncorp Stadium at Milton and Roma Street Station however, this could prove a bit impractical with bikes, scooters or skateboards in tow.

Crestmead Park PLayground

Crestmead Park features

Located next to the PCYC community centre, Crestmead Park has so much space available, with all features being spread out to give it a less busy, calmer feel than other parks.

With a striking black and orange colour scheme, the playground’s play fort grabs attention. A tangle of ropes must be negotiated to reach the top of the sky-high structures, each topped with a small cubby and linked with an enclosed rope bridge.

Noticeably absent is a slide, however, it doesn’t detract from the fun and sense of achievement in reaching the top. Due to the ropes’ spacing, children under three will struggle to climb the structure without assistance. Taking into consideration the scale of the fort, it is unfortunately unshaded. It would be best visited in the mornings or afternoons, as the heat reflected from the sand and concrete could be overwhelming.

Situated alongside the climbing structure is a toddler and normal swing, a sit on digger, and some rubberized mounds. Ensure you pack the buckets and spades as there is plenty of sand!

Up there with the best bike tracks in Brisbane, Crestmead Park also boasts a very realistic track layout. Given the sizing, it could host a number of riders and it’s completely flat so even the younger ones can join in. There are a number of trees surrounding the track which means it is mostly shaded.

crestmead playground swings

The Crestmead Skatepark

Also on site is a full-sized basketball court and a large skate park with plenty of grind rails, stairs, ramps and a half pipe. In the back corner of the park is a BMX track which has a maintained grass covering.

If this is the main reason for visiting Crestmead Park, perhaps consider checking out one of the other BMX tracks in the Logan region. There is a bitumen track at Waller Park on Waller Road at Browns Plains or a dirt track at Logan BMX at Underwood Park on Underwood Road at Priestdale.

Imagination Factor

We love the sky-high towers, climbing the vines like a wild jungle dweller then having secret club meetings in the tree top cubbies. The groves of trees make for a great space for playing a game of hide and seek. Crestmead Park also stimulates the imagination with its expansive traffic track.

Kids can whizz around on their bikes and scooters, picturing themselves as drivers while learning about the rules of the road. The spider’s web climbing frame is great for children plotting together to escape giant spiders and villains.

Special Needs

There is off street parking which is shared with Crestmead PCYC. A public bathroom is located in the carpark, however, there is no disabled cubicle nor space for baby change. Around the playground, there is a section of concrete but no paths connecting each of the features. The playground is unfenced.

Crestmead Park is located on the corner of Gimlet Street & Royena Court in Crestmead.

Teviot Downs Park in New Beith https://brisbanekids.com.au/teviot-downs-park-new-beith-enchanting-childrens-playground/ https://brisbanekids.com.au/teviot-downs-park-new-beith-enchanting-childrens-playground/#respond Sun, 23 Jul 2023 04:42:21 +0000 https://brisbanekids.com.au/?p=316695 Teviot Downs Park is nestled in the quiet suburb of New Beith, surrounded by thick bushland. Only occasionally can we use the words beautiful and enchanting when describing a children’s playground, but Teviot Downs Park is just that. From the landscaping in keeping with the natural environment to the garden theme of the toddler section, it would be the perfect place for a family gathering or a children’s birthday party.

Teviot Downs Park playground

Teviot Downs Park suits both big and small Brisbane Kids. The main play structure is engaging and aims to encourage thinking and physical activity. It has various optical illusions to engage with and plenty of traditional playground fun!

It also caters to climbers, with various climbing elements to challenge even the most confident of climbers and more accessible options for those who are not so confident. There are three slides, a small flying fox, a fireman’s pole, and a toddler and standard swing adjacent to the structure. This section has a sand base and while the leading play platforms have small roofs for shade,  there is additional shade from the mature trees in this park.

The toddler section captures the imagination. Here you’ll meet some new friends. Two lizards, an adult frog and a smaller frog resting by the lily pads, all made from recycled rubber. It has a three-way seesaw with flower petal seats and a bongo drum, all shaded by beautiful butterfly shade cloth. A large garden chime is on the other side of the grove of recycled rubber toadstools.

Surrounding the play space is a concreted path perfect for bikes and scooters and ample grassed areas for running or ball games. A half-court basketball court is near the bathrooms.

There is also a large skate park with plenty of fun obstacles, ramps, bowls and rails for experienced skaters, gentle slopes and extra smooth surfaces to assist beginners. The path between the play area and the skate park is decorated with beautiful murals of native wildlife you can find in the local bushland.

Imagination Factor

The toddler garden space is beautiful; even older children will be enchanted. It has been designed for them to climb and crawl over the animals and toadstools, and with the native birdsong from the surrounding bushland, it feels pretty magical.

Lay back, lean against a lizard and look up at the sky. Cloud spot, identify some native birdlife, or appreciate the butterflies on the shade cloth above.

It is the perfect place to encourage a love of the Australian bush, particularly the birdlife. Otherwise, bang away on the musical instruments and create a musical masterpiece.  This area is well-shaded with a large shade sail.

Accessibility

Off-street parking is available, as are public bathrooms, which are all-abilities accessible. There are four shade structures with tables and chairs; each has an electric barbecue. These are all connected by a concrete path to the car park and bathrooms. The playground would get quite warm in the midday sun; perhaps plan your visit in the mornings or afternoons.

Teviot Downs Park features

  • Unfenced playground
  • Toilets (all abilities accessible)
  • Partly shaded playground
  • Sand base
  • Three slides
  • Numerous climbing opportunities
  • Toddler swing and normal swing
  • Musical chimes and bongo drum
  • Three-way seesaw
  • Small flying fox

  • Half-court basketball court
  • Skate park
  • Shaded tables and chairs

Another playground worth visiting nearby is Darlington Parklands.

What we thought of the park?

We visit lots of playgrounds across Brisbane, so it is always refreshing to see a playground that has stepped outside the plastic-fantastic type approach. My kids loved the unique native animal inclusions, and I imagine this appreciation would have been far greater had they been toddlers.

Deception Bay Skate Park and Playground https://brisbanekids.com.au/deception-bay-skate-park-and-playground/ https://brisbanekids.com.au/deception-bay-skate-park-and-playground/#respond Sat, 03 Jun 2023 00:00:46 +0000 https://brisbanekids.com.au/?p=312243 On the north side of Brisbane, in the Moreton Bay region, you will find the new and improved Deception Bay Skate Park, which not only boasts several terrains for skating, but also includes a playground, Adizone fitness gym and sports arena. This easy to access location with lots of activities on offer will keep Brisbane Kids of all ages busy and expending a lot of energy.

Deception Bay Skate Park

Deception Bay Skate Park is laid out into three different zones, featuring a flat bank,  street and transition terrain which accommodates different skills and skating styles. The layout caters for simultaneous users of scooters, skateboards, rollerblades, and BMX’s. The smooth surface is inviting and suitable for all ages, and differing levels of experience from novice to expert.

Brisbane kids can build their confidence and develop their tricks at their own pace as they move freely around the obstacles and banks within the wide space.

Around the perimeter of the Skate Park is bench seating and a sheltered area, ideal for spectators and places to rest tired little legs. This space is unfenced and can be quite busy, so supervision will be required.

A water fountain, the accessible parking bays and toilet facilities are also located next to the Skate Park, (near the Aquatic Centre) within the off-street parking on Maine Terrace. The skate park also has lighting for evening use, closing at 10pm.

Deception Bay Skate Park Playground and Adizone

The playground at Deception Bay Skate Park is suitable for younger children who will enjoy exploring the space between the small cubby houses by clambering across the net wall or along the net bridge before going down one of the slides or fireman pole.

Adjacent, is a small flying fox, spica spinner and a trio of swings (nest, adult, toddler).  Established trees are positioned around the edge of the bark chip play area, and provide some shade. This space is unfenced, and located near one of the two car parks, so supervision will also be required.

The playground is set mostly on bark chip, while the swings and spinner are set on rubber soft fall.

This location also features an Adizone, promoting outdoor fitness. Underneath a shade sail is an open fitness gym, which includes equipment that focuses on toning, cardio and strength training. There is also a climbing wall, with the other side open for tennis. A small, enclosed arena allows kids to play cricket, futsal soccer and basketball, just BYO equipment.  The Adizone also had lighting, so this space is also usable in the evening.

Nestled between the skate park, playground and fitness area is a shelter with two bench seats and a water fountain.

The Deception Bay Aquatic Centre, PCYC and Sports Centre, are also housed in the neighbouring area on Maine Terrace.

Accessibility

There are two car-parking areas either side of the PCYC building. The car park nearest the skate area and Aquatic Centre has two designated, accessible parking spaces either side of the accessible toilet block.

Both car park areas are connected to a smooth footpath which links the different spaces of this location together.

There is some shade throughout the area, provided by established trees, two picnic shelters and a shade sail covering only the fitness equipment. Appropriate sun protection will be required during warmer months.

What we thought of Deception Bay Skate Park

We think Deception Bay Skate Park is a location which could be enjoyed by older and younger kids simultaneously. Teens will be deeply engaged in the Skate Park or sports arena, while younger children will enjoy the playground and could even try their hand at the skate park.  Be sure to pack your own equipment and safety gear and keep in mind that parking may be limited during popular weekend sports times.

Redbank Plains Recreation Reserve https://brisbanekids.com.au/redbank-plains-recreation-reserve/ https://brisbanekids.com.au/redbank-plains-recreation-reserve/#respond Thu, 18 May 2023 22:18:39 +0000 http://www.brisbanekids.com.au/?p=219445 Located just 15 minutes from Ipswich city, the recently upgraded Redbank Plains Recreation Reserve has become a favourite meeting place for the community to gather, play, socialise and relax. A sky high activity tower and skate park will keep the big kids busy while a dedicated toddler playground is sure to keep little adventurers safe and happy.

Redbank Plains Recreation Reserve Playground

The central playground is all about the vertical thrill with a 9-metre tall adventure tower made from cargo netting, platforms and ladders. It’s a challenging climb but the roped exterior allows for good parental supervision and encouragement if needed.

Successful climbers have a choice of either a super speedy tunnel slide or a darkened, twisty tube slide, which will excite older playground enthusiasts.

Another stand out feature is the 20-metre long high ropes style course which again is aimed at the bigger kids and is a real test of balance, strength and coordination. Mini climbers can also enjoy the course with the help of a guiding adult hand.

In addition to this, the play space also contains a giant, rotating birds nest swing and multiple bay swing set for joint play plus cool spinners for the sensory seekers.

Adjacent to this is a brightly coloured, platform-style playground designed completely with your littlest family members in mind. This fantastic junior playground was upgraded only two years ago and is suitable for ages 1 to 5 with its easy to access platforms, ground level educational activities, gentle slides and cute pretend play environments.kids playground redbank plains ninja playground equipment.

On top of this, are other playground essentials such as swings, see saws, bouncers and inclusive carousel – all built on a soft base and with generous shade sail coverings. There’s also plenty of nearby seating to help keep a close eye on the kids or to settle in for a picnic lunch.

Located just along the footpath is a huge skate park which has also recently undergone a makeover and is popular among skaters of all skill levels. The skate park also neighbours a large grassy field, making for the ideal soccer pitch, friendly cricket match, or even an afternoon of kite flying.

Redbank Plains Reserve Imagination Factor

The main activity tower is a great source for imaginary play as its abstract design creates a blank canvas for storytelling. Ropes and netting are reminiscent of a pirate ship and the crown like shape on top could lead to games of princes and princesses. The nearby high ropes course also provides a great setting for pretend play with its elements of height, risk and adventure.

The neighbouring toddler playground is jam packed with sensory experiences from the musical instruments to the interactive games with fun to be discovered at every corner. Shop and cafe fronts are also included to promote social inclusion and to guide children towards a creative style of play.

What our kids loved about this park!

toddler playground redbank recreation reserve.

We love the excitement and wow factor of modern playgrounds like the one at Redbank Plains Recreation Reserve but what really gets our tick of approval is the equally impressive toddler playground. A lot of care and thought has been given to creating a space that’s inviting and accessible for children of all ages which earns this playground a spot on your to visit list.

It’s hard work with all that playing, so why not stop by Springfield Central for a refreshing dip in Orion Lagoon or have a splash at Robelle Domain Splash Park. Another great resource is our comprehensive list of Ipswich Parks
