This magical Tree Top Walk has something for kids of all ages. Even better? It’s only two hours from Brisbane!
One of Queensland’s Finest Walks
O’Reilly’s Tree Top Walk will inspire city kids to develop a love for the natural world. Families will be mesmerised as they traverse nine suspension bridges up to 16 metres high. The wooden bridges span more than 180 metres in length. It claims to be Queensland’s first tree top walk – delighting visitors since 1988.
Only Two Hours from Brisbane but a World Away
Hit the road early to traverse the mountain lanes up to Lamington National Park, Green Mountain’s Section. Soak in the views as the city quickly melts into the countryside. Play, ‘spotto,’ with farm animals and see how many cows, sheep and horses your children can spot on the way.
Just follow the clearly marked signed road signs for O’Reilly’s. The trail is conveniently located across the street from the O’Reilly’s eco-lodge reception. There is a complimentary parking lot just down the road so you’ll easily find a place to park.
Enter the Ancient Rainforest
Your journey begins along the magical Booyan Boardwalk. Immediately when you enter the trail, there is fabulously maintained boardwalk that passes several stunning Booyan trees. Their huge, shallow roots could easily be mistaken for giant’s feet.
Make sure to look up as many of these trees old world trees can grow up 40-60 metres high. This area is all part of the Gondwana Rainforest of Australia – a World Heritage Area.
O’Reilly’s Tree Top Walk entrance is easy to find
The beginning of the Tree Top Walk is clearly posted. You’ll veer towards the right to begin your journey soaring above the trees. The best part is it’s free. There is a donation box at the end of walk if you’d like to contribute to the continued maintenance of this incredible structure.
Our top tip is to visit in the morning when the forest is waking up.
Due to safety reasons, there are only six people allowed on several sections of the bridge.
We went around 7:30am and had the bridge all to ourselves. You immediately feel the immensity of the forest as you move through each section of the walk. We slowly traversed across each section soaking in the early morning melodies of the forest.
Older Brisbane Kids’ will Love Climbing Above the Trees
One of the many reasons we love the Tree Top walk is because it incorporates nature play for older kids! A unique, multi-level crow’s nest is attached to a Strangler Fig tree. The crow’s nest has two distinct levels.
The first is a significant climb up a metal ladder that leads to a stunning lookout of the valley below. For those brave teenagers, there’s another level reaching up to 30 metres above the ground!
An Abundance of Bird Life Awaits You
There are 160 types of sub-tropical birds, most only found in this special corner of the world.
As you walk through each section of the rope bridges, be sure to pause along the way. Look down to see the bird’s eye perspective of the forest canopy. If you listen closely, you’re sure to hear the song of the Eastern Whipbird.
Lewin’s Honeyeaters, Eastern Spinebills and Superb Fairywrens are also commonly found in this section of the park. You’ll be forgiven for feeling like one of the rainforests gorgeous birds seemingly floating above the trees.
