BMX can be great fun for kids who love to get outdoors and be active on their bikes, and is a wonderful hobby loved by both girls and boys alike. There are many places around Brisbane where kids can go to either learn the BMX basics or go to simply enjoy this hobby with other BMX bandits.
What is BMX riding?
BMX (Bicycle Moto Cross) is one of the fastest growing sports in Australia, where the whole family can participate. Riders of all ages (from 2 years and up) can compete in organised race meetings through clubs in most cities. The sport of BMX racing ranges from club participation, right through to state, national and world championship levels for all ages. BMX is also an Elite Olympic Sport. It is great for building confidence, increasing coordination and getting kids active.
Membership, Clubs and Coaching
BMX Australia – Membership prices vary, depending on the age of the child, however BMX Australia offer membership to children from 2 years of age. Toddlers can learn the very basics as part of the BMX Mini Wheelers program, priced from $30 for a full year of membership.
BMX Queensland – For the more serious BMX riders, or for kids who may be wanting some coaching or extra support, BMX Queensland website has a list of BMX clubs throughout Queensland, complete with links to the individual club websites. They also have a list of upcoming BMX events and event registration, which makes it a convenient information portal. Registration can be completed online via any of the club websites.
Free places to ride BMX in Brisbane
Bracken Ridge BMX Track in Fitzgibbon is one of Australia’s biggest BMX tracks! Opened in September 2018 and commissioned by the Brisbane City Council, this BMX track is set on a 5,700 square meter parcel of land, with 640 meters of track for the kids to test out. Open 365 days a year in all weather, Bracken Ridge BMX Track was created to be a great learner track that is also fun for all levels of rider.
Pine Rivers BMX Track in Brendale is a fantastic track for various ages and skill levels. For a morning of thrills and excitement, it is the perfect place to give your budding BMX bandit a go! The Pine Rivers BMX Track is maintained by Pine Rivers BMX Club. The club runs lessons for all levels of experience, as well as hosts races, working bees and other events. Outside of the times when these events are taking place, the general public may access the track.
Darra BMX Track featured 2 loops for kids and adults with grades that cater for all ages and abilities from beginner to professional.
DM Henderson Park in MacGregor is perfect for the whole family as not only does it have a free BMX track, but also a playground, basketball half-court, cricket pitch and picnic areas. There’s something for everyone in the family to do while BMX fans ride to their hearts content.
Underwood Park in Priestdale is another great place for the whole family with playgrounds, recreational areas, and a popular BMX track, which is home to regular competitions through the year.
Greenways Esplanade Park in Parkinson offers an all round family day out with a BMX track and all the other great features of a family friendly park, including playgrounds, picnic areas and a basketball half-court.
MTB Dirt provides a comprehensive list of free BMX tracks throughout Brisbane and surrounds, with difficulty ratings included on some of the tracks. The addresses for each of the tracks is also provided for convenience.
