Fancy a drive through the beautiful countryside, a gourmet picnic hamper overlooking a rural vineyard and a glass of wine in your hand as you watch your Brisbane Kids roll down a big grassy hill, over and over again?
This heavenly place exists just 45km from Brisbane at Ocean View Estate Winery (near the township of Dayboro) and makes a lovely weekend activity for families, particularly if you have something to celebrate.
Ocean View Estate Winery – wine and food options
If you’re willing to tag team with your partner or friend, whilst the other entertains the kids outdoors, you can enjoy the wine tasting at the Cellar Door. The range of wines, which are made from estate grown grapes, include reds, whites, desert wines, port and sparkling wines. You might like to purchase a bottle to enjoy once you get home and have the kiddies tucked up in bed.
The restaurant, which offers both indoor and outdoor dining (on the big deck overlooking the vineyard) has a small children’s menu.
However, the most child friendly dining option would have to be the gourmet picnic hampers which can be enjoyed on the sunny lawn overlooking the small lake and vineyard. There are horses in the nearby fields, a pretty rotunda and a lake crossing for the kids to explore. Take a picnic rug or camping chairs and set yourselves up for the afternoon!
Please note – no BYO food or drinks are to be consumed at Ocean View Estate due to liquor licensing.
Is Ocean View Estate Winery family friendly?
Although there are no playgrounds or specific activities for children, there are plenty of wide open spaces for them to run free. Be aware that the lake is not fenced, and so adult supervision is required at all times.
Various family-friendly events are held during the year, such as the recent Alpaca Week (complete with baby alpacas to pet). Follow their Facebook page to stay up to date with what is happening.
There is also accommodation on the property – but these cottages are more tailored to couples.
The Mathema Gallery
In August 2023, the co-owners of Ocean View Estates, Dr Calvin and Rosemary Irons, opened up the Southern Hemisphere’s only mathematics gallery/museum – The Mathema Gallery. Conveniently situated at the entrance of the estate, there is no excuse for not visiting as you drive past.
Visitors can explore the history of numbers and mathematics, in an interactive and fun way. With lots of hands-on activities and a well stocked gift shop, don’t just drive past this Gallery when visiting Ocean View Estate – stop in. Oh and did we mention entry is free!
What We Thought of Ocean View Estate
Relaxing at Ocean View Estate is a wonderful way to spend any weekend or celebrate a special occasion and we make a point of visiting at least once a year.
The food and wine is spectacular, as are the views. The children happily enjoy the wide open spaces, listening to the birds and trying to spot animals in the neighbouring paddocks.
For a touch of fun and education, a visit to The Mathema Gallery is a great way to work up an appetite before visiting the winery. A definite family favourite!
While You Are in the Area
