  • AboutBrisbane Kids Creative was created by me! Ngaire Stirling. I wont pretend to talk in the third person about myself, instead let me tell you a bit about me and how 110.232.142.129/~brisba22 came about. At the time the domain name 110.232.142.129/~brisba22 came up for purchase I was a stay at home mum in the middle of a degree centred around journalism and PR. a couple of years earlier I had been contemplating returning to my previous career in marketing management and for a while I even tried. 3 months into a new role and it was clear that I had no passion for my old life and to make the decision to quit easier, my almost 2 year old at the time was not coping with childcare. So, as a family we made the decision for me to return to becoming a stay at home mum. About 1 years later or so.. 110.232.142.129/~brisba22 came up for sale. My friends had often commented on my ability to know exactly what was happening in Brisbane for kids. I had my son enrolled in some awesome activities and we often visited some great destinations. I loved finding fun things for us to do…

Best Bookshops for Kids in Brisbane

Last Updated: August 12, 2023
australian books kids

In Brisbane, we are very fortunate to have access to some tremendous independent bookstores which is how we managed to create the list, of best bookshops for kids in Brisbane. In an age where young people spend more and more time connected online, there is something extra special about holding a book in your hand and immersing yourself in reading. Part of this journey is visiting a physical bookshop and seeing what is on offer – perhaps discovering an old classic or uncovering a new favourite.

Nowadays bookshops are not just bookshops, they are often a place to have a coffee, join in a literary event, listen to an author speak, attend a book launch or partake in a book club. They have so much to offer for families, so why not find your nearest local bookstore and take the whole family for a visit?

Quick Brown Fox Bookshop – Grange

Store front of Quick Brown Fox Bookshop.

In 2022, book fanatics and owners Anna and Theresa opened Quick Brown Fox Bookshop on Brisbane’s northside at the Grange.

Tucked away near Wilston State School, this gem of a bookshop is jam-packed full of every kids’ book you could ever want (and I am sure they could get it in if they don’t have it).

If you are after a recommendation or just want to discuss your favourite books, then the knowledgeable and friendly staff (usually Anna and/or Theresa) will be happy to have a chat. Aside from spending hours browsing the well-stocked bookshelves, visitors can also engage in weekly story time, book launches, school holiday events, author talks and book clubs. If you love beautiful books, you simply must visit this bookshop.

Bright and Early Books – Ascot

When the owner of a bookshop is super passionate about reading for pleasure and knowledge you know you are bound to find a treasure trove of books adorning the shelves. You will not be disappointed when you visit Bright and Early Books.

This gorgeous shop is easy to browse, stocking a large variety of children’s fiction and non-fiction books, in addition to a great range of books for adults too. School holiday programs, book clubs for juniors and adults, author talks, book launches and more entertains visiting book enthusiasts and encourages reading among young and old.

Where The Wild Things Are – West End

Stomp into this very child-friendly bookshop in West End, to peruse a wide selection of children’s books. Situated beside its big sister, the Avid Reader, Where the Wild Things Are is far more than just an ordinary bookshop.

Fun, family-friendly events are held regularly in-store and include book signings, story time, book clubs and book launches. Storytime often involves art and craft, hands-on activities and sometimes even live animals!! The staff pride themselves on personal service and are always on hand to offer suggestions and advice on choosing the perfect book, whether it is for you, the school or a gift.

The Mad Hatters Bookshop – Manly

Perfectly situated in the Brisbane bayside town of Manly, The Mad Hatters Bookshop is bursting with books, games, puzzles and gifts and is definitely a place where you can spend some time perusing the shelves. Harry Potter lovers will rejoice in the Harry Potter Room where you can immerse yourself in all things Hogwarts.

Throughout the year there are also some brilliant events on offer such as shopping nights, book clubs and school holiday activities, all capped off with a wonderful rewards program (you can earn free books just by being a regular customer).

The Book Garden – Graceville

The Book Garden is an independent, Australian owned bookstore situated in Graceville within the American Bookstore.

Be sure to check out their regular children’s book clubs as well as weekly Storytime’s.

Mary Ryan Books – Milton

Mary Ryan Books is a Brisbane institution, selling books since 1975. The substantial children’s section is thoughtfully placed away from the main action of the shop with ‘reading copies’ of children’s books provided for the little ones to look through whilst you are visiting the store.

There is also a café within the store as well as an Australian Post, so you can check off a few tasks when visiting. Make sure you also check out the other Mary Ryan Book stores in New Farm and Noosa.

Riverbend Books – Bulimba

Trading since 1998 and located in picturesque Bulimba, Riverbend Books is a wonderful place to not only browse books, but to sit, relax and have a bite to eat in the café on the deck.

The Lifeline Bookfest

Whilst not technically a ‘bookshop’ this biannual event held in Brisbane every January and June is a brilliant place to grab a bargain. The Lifeline Bookfest is a free event and sells a range of pre-loved books starting from just $1. So dig out your small change, pack up the kids and head to The Lifeline Bookfest to expand your book collection.
