The Mountview Alpaca Farm is a little over an hour’s drive south of Brisbane, situated just outside the picturesque country town on Canungra in the Scenic Rim region, tucked in behind Mount Tamborine and the New South Wales border.
The alpacas at Mountview are friendly and are well-groomed, and you can choose to feed them (Alpaca food is for sale in the shop for $3 per bag) or walk them from $15.
The staff will help you select an alpaca who suits your family (younger children might be paired with older, calmer and more obedient alpacas, while older Brisbane kids might enjoy the company of more spirited younger ones). They’re happy to walk along with you – through the vineyards or down towards the stream that runs alongside their paddocks – but when you stop they’ll take the opportunity to nibble the fresh grass that also doubles as a picnic lawn.
Small children will delight in their ability to ‘walk’ this large, placid animals and it will create a memorable day out for the whole family. If you’re fortunate you may also get to meet some baby alpacas or spot the resident turtles or even a platypus in Canungra Creek.
How to get to Mountview Alpaca Farm
The farm shares the grounds of O’Reilly’s Canungra Valley Vineyards – you can also order a bottle of wine or a picnic basket from the vineyard.
Mountview Alpaca Farm makes a wonderful day trip destination with your kids or would be a fantastic way to spend time as part of a weekend or school holiday trip to the Scenic Rim or up to Mount Tamborine. It’s nestled in the bottom of a valley with a creek passing through. You can see where the bushfires have hit in the nearby areas on the drive into the farm, but just like the people who live out here, the bush is springing back quickly.
