However, there is far more to dancing than this and choosing the right studio for your child is crucial for nurturing their lifelong love of dance.

We are sitting down with Bonnie Ross from Radiance Dance Academy who is sharing some tips for how to choose a dance school that best suits your child.

Why consider dance as an activity for your child?

How to choose a dance school Radiance Dance young ballerinas in red.

There are so many styles of dance, and, although they’re all different, they have a lot in common.

Dance teaches our children coordination, confidence and resilience that will support them throughout their lives.

By attending dance classes, children build friendships, develop social skills and learn about teamwork. And, of course, dance builds strength and fitness!

The number one thing you should look for

How to choose a dance school? Like a ballet slipper, it’s about the fit! A dance studio must be the right fit for your child.

Most studios will offer a trial class. If your child attends a trial class and loves it, you may have found the right school!

Most of all, though, trust your child’s instincts – they need to be happy and comfortable. Be sure to take particular notice of how the teachers interact with the students and parents at the studio as well as the syllabus and classes on offer.

What else should you look for?

How to choose a dance school Radiance Dance young dancers in blue.

Studio culture is the next thing we encourage parents to look for.

At Radiance, we value discipline, teamwork, respect for one another, community and, most importantly, an overarching love of dance. To help our students get the most from their classes, we have capped class numbers that allow for individual correction and attention. And we ensure our students know that the process is more important than the outcome – we love to celebrate their achievements! The studio environment at Radiance is supportive, empowering and fosters progress over perfection!

There are a few things we suggest parents look for in a studio’s culture:

1. Nurturing & Supportive

First and foremost, the studio must nurture a love of dance; it needs to be an encouraging and supportive environment that inspires students to do their best, whether that be recreationally or professionally!

You want your child to love going to their dance class. Not only will this help them get the most from their lesson, but it is reassuring for you to know they’re enjoying themselves.

2. Experience & Qualifications

Secondly, the teachers need to be qualified and experienced, with a passion for dancing and teaching.

In Australia, the dance industry is unregulated, so be sure to speak with the studio director about their teachers’ qualifications and experience. You want to ensure your child is being taught by someone who has studied dance formally, learned how to teach and engage children and knows how to incorporate safe dance practices into their classes!

Also, pay particular attention to the syllabi offered as this will indicate the studios teaching qualifications. At Radiance we offer the prestigious Queensland Ballet Petit Pointers preschool program and the Royal Academy of Dance syllabus.

3. Safety

Finally, ensure that classes are run in a safe, professional environment which includes the correct dance flooring (Tarkett or spring wood), mirrors and barres. Safety should be a priority to ensure your child is receiving the best possible tuition and care when they attend their lessons!

What style of dance is best for children?

How to choose a dance school Radiance Dance young dancers in butterfly wings.

There is no right or wrong answer here. If a child has a preference, start with that! However, if your child doesn’t show a preference, we recommend choosing a class that combines styles.

At Radiance we have a popular Tiny Tot Combo class combining ballet and jazz, offering young children aged 1.5-5 years the opportunity to learn both styles. This is fantastic in allowing young children to learn the two foundation styles of dance in one lesson! The perfect start to their dance journey and a convenient option for busy families!

We believe children should be encouraged to try as many styles as possible and then pursue those that light them up. Whether it’s ballet, jazz, acrobatics, hip-hop, contemporary or acting, dancing and singing in a Musical Theatre class – there is a style for every child at Radiance!

Parents should look for a studio offering several dance styles, passionate, qualified teachers, classes that balance discipline with fun, and a happy, positive culture and embrace it!!

We hope you’ve found these tips for how to choose a dance school for your child helpful. You can find out more about Radiance Dance Academy and classes at their Holland Park and Windsor studios at www.dancewithradiance.com or visit their Facebook page/Instagram.

In this blog post, we will explore the different options for donating school supplies and how you can make a difference in the lives of local students and students in other countries.

I am not sure how your school organises its school book list, but with ours, we seem to buy a lot of stuff that we never use. After three kids and over 20 years of combined schooling, I have an extensive exercise book collection and an incredible amount of glue sticks. We asked the Brisbane Kids Facebook page where they donate school supplies left over in Brisbane, and they told us this.

Where to donate school supplies in Brisbane

Stationery Aid

Stationery Aid, founded in 2020, is a Queensland-based charity dedicated to reducing waste and supporting education through collecting and renewing used and excess school stationery. Stationery Aid do this by preparing yearly school booklists that are packed by volunteers using donated and renewed resources. These booklists are then distributed to disadvantaged school students who would otherwise not be able to start their school year with the required supplies for learning. In 2023, Stationery Aid diverted over 12,000kg of stationery from landfills and provided over 540 disadvantaged Queensland students with their yearly school book lists. www.stationeryaid.org

Granite Belt Christmas Farm https://brisbanekids.com.au/granite-belt-christmas-farm/ https://brisbanekids.com.au/granite-belt-christmas-farm/#respond Tue, 21 May 2024 08:15:57 +0000 http://www.brisbanekids.com.au/?p=249799 If you ever had a ‘real’ Christmas tree growing up, you’ll know the smell of fresh pine evokes happy, festive memories. At the Granite Belt Christmas Farm in Stanthorpe, you can get that Christmassy feeling all year round. Boasting real Christmas trees, friendly animals, delicious food and the most epic Christmas shop, any time of the year is a good time to visit the Granite Belt Christmas Farm.

Things to do at Granite Belt Christmas Farm

There is plenty of fun, family-friendly activities to keep visitors entertained at the Granite Belt Christmas Farm. An annual family visit to the farm would make a lovely Christmas tradition, and help boost the economy of rural Queensland.

Choose a Christmas tree to take home

'Farm Fresh Christmas Trees' sign at Granite Belt Christmas Farm.

Families are welcome to walk through the avenues of trees and choose one to take home. The cost of the tree depends on its height and whether you require netting to transport it. Their harvest weekends start in late November so check their website for details to ensure you don’t miss out.

During the harvest weekend, there are often BBQs, face painting and visits from Santa. If you miss the harvest weekend, you can still visit the farm between 1st and 23rd December to choose your real Christmas tree. but be sure to check their website for details.

The farm grows more than 10,000 Christmas trees shaped four times yearly, so you’re bound to find one just right for your home. If you are worried you will miss out, you can preorder one via their website.

Feed the Animals

A young girl patting a donkey at Granite Belt Christmas Farm.

Admission to the Granite Belt Christmas Farm is free, but for a small fee you can buy a bucket of animal food to offer to the friendly animals, including donkeys, goats, sheep, ducks and chickens.

There are plenty of wide-open spaces for the kids to run around on this family-friendly farm and plenty of Christmas-themed paraphernalia to keep kids interested.

Although Christmas trees can only be purchased in December, the farm is open to visitors year-round.

Visit the Mistletoe Christmas Store

Christmas decorations in the shop at Granite Belt Christmas Farm.

Stepping into the Mistletoe Christmas store, you’ll find a wonderland of over 20,000 Christmas decorations, cards, ornaments and gifts. There are also vintage collectables, jewellery, scarves, homewares and cookbooks.

Fear not, if you can’t make it to the store, you can shop online at https://granitebeltchristmasfarm.com.au/

Pick Up Some Decorations at Fraser’s Harvest Barn

Fraser's Fresh Harvest Barn at Granite Belt Christmas Farm.

If you are looking to jazz up your house for the festive period or put on a mammoth outdoor display for the whole neighbourhood to enjoy, then you should definitely visit the barn.

Stocking a range of outdoor Christmas decorations visitors can find Infinity lights, Christmas trees, inflatables, lighting and more.

Have a Treat from Mrs Claus’ Kitchen

Pancakes with ice cream and strawberries at Granite Belt Christmas Farm.

Thanks to the Granite Belt’s frosty and low-humidity climate, all year round is a good time to indulge in a Belgian hot chocolate. Made according to a secret recipe, these hot chocolates are only small but so good.

A range of sweet and savoury food is also available for purchase at the cafe.

Enjoy a Picnic Among the Trees

Fresh Christmas trees in the paddock at Granite Belt Christmas Farm.

For something a little different why not have a picnic among the Christmas Trees. Hampers can be ordered in advance and are available for pick up between 9am and 3pm. A rug and basket are included in the price (but must be returned).

Attend a Special Event

While the Farm hosts various events throughout the year, one of their most popular is the annual Christmas in July. Guests are treated to a traditional lunch, can meet Santa and enjoy the festive atmosphere, but be warned, it sells out quickly, so keep an eye on their website for tickets and details.

Things to Know Before You Visit

  • Dogs are not allowed on the farm
  • A full cafe is provided, therefore outside food and beverages are not permitted
  • Be mindful of breakables in the shop with a strict, ‘you break, you buy’ policy.
  • The cafe, farm and shop are wheelchair accessible with allocated parking and an accessible toilet.

What We Love About the Granite Belt Christmas Farm

A man sitting around a fire ring at Granite Belt Christmas Farm.

Every time we visit Stanthorpe (usually in Winter) we simply must visit the Granite Belt Christmas Farm.

The kids love patting the animals and wandering around checking out all the Christmas decorations, while the adults enjoy having a hot drink and sitting in the sun, soaking up the Christmassy atmosphere.

The free admission means you can pop in for a quick drink, a little bit of retail therapy or stay for while, either way, the Granite Belt Christmas Tree Farm, should definitely feature high on your Granite Belt itinerary.

While You Are in the Area

There is no shortage of family-friendly activities in the Stanthorpe area. One of our favourite places to visit, and less than 10 minutes down the road is The Granite Belt Maze, where visitors can get lost, play mini golf and enjoy many fun photo ops.

Of course, when your tummies are rumbling, head to one of the many eateries serving delicious, local produce. We particularly love the toasted sandwiches at Stanthorpe Cheese and the desserts and juice at Sutton’s Juice Factory, Cidery and Cafe.

If you are searching for more ideas on things to do in the Granite Belt area, read our family guide to the Granite Belt Region

How to Find Bus Services for Brisbane School Kids https://brisbanekids.com.au/how-to-find-bus-services-for-brisbane-school-kids/ https://brisbanekids.com.au/how-to-find-bus-services-for-brisbane-school-kids/#respond Tue, 21 May 2024 06:20:02 +0000 http://brisbanekids.com.au/?p=111456 Once you have made the hard decision about which school your child will attend, often the next question is how will they get there. You might live close enough they can walk or ride, or perhaps you will drive them. But if these options aren’t available to you then maybe you will need to consider utilising a school bus service.

Finding Bus Route Information for School Students

With several options for bus travel to schools in Brisbane, here we have listed the ones we know about, but as always, we advise you to check with your school, individual bus companies and do your research before sending your child to school on the bus.

TRANSLINK

In South East Queensland, school students can catch any Translink bus, ferry, train or tram service to and from their home to school. To assist in school travel Translink. even has a School Service Finder, which allows you to search for school and urban bus services near your school.

We suggest taking the trip with your Brisbane Kid prior to the school year commences to ensure they feel comfortable travelling alone and that you can provide them with safe zones and people in case they find themselves in trouble.

We also advise checking out the times bus and train stations are open and emergency procedures. Sometimes equipping your school child with a mobile device may be an ideal way to provide an extra level of security.

For safe school travel tips and ticketing, visit the Translink website.

BRISBANE BUS LINES

Another great bus service provided in the north-west of Brisbane is run by Brisbane Bus Lines. Servicing over 30 suburbs this school bus network directly services many schools or offers a service for part of the journey.

A large number of our school buses operate in semi-rural areas where there are few (if any) formal bus stops. We always work with parents and student to determine the safest pick up and drop off locations along these roads.

For extra safety we now utilise an electronic ticketing system which also provide GPS tracking of our school buses. Parents and students can track the buses and parents can opt in to track their own child’s bus movements through the mobile app.

For school bus travel and timetable information, including timetables and connection maps please visit the Brisbane Bus Lines website.

SOUTHERN CROSS TRANSIT

Southern Cross Transit provides bus services to more than 20 schools in Brisbane’s Western Suburbs and Ipswich.

As these services are provided to private and public schools on a charter basis, the route, fares and schedules are chosen by the individual school. A transport tracking app is available to see where the buses are in real time, and all fares are paid using a pre-paid SmartCard.

Timetables and maps of school bus routes can be located at the Southern Cross Transit website.

BUS QUEENSLAND

Bus Queensland is one of the largest privately owned bus companies in Australia and provides school transport services for the greater South East Queensland area. With four depots servicing Ipswich, the Lockyer Valley, Park Ridge and Toowoomba, they consider themselves part of the local community.

Once the school of choice has been selected on their website, descriptions of various routes appear to make choosing the correct route simple and easy.

Transport assistance may also be provided by Education Queensland for students with disabilities where circumstances and family needs are warranted.

KANGAROO BUS LINES

Kangaroo Bus Lines has been transporting students to and from schools for more than 30 years. Now more than 40 schools across the City of Moreton Bay utilise this service safely transporting students to their place of education.

For a complete list of services provided for school travel visit the Kangaroo Bus Lines website.

THOMPSON BUS SERVICES

Thompson Bus Services undertake more than 30 school bus services on the northside of Brisbane.

Services are reviewed regularly in response to demand, so please check their website for timetables, ticketing and further information.

When is your child ready to catch a bus to school?

Bus stop painted on the road.

Knowing when your child is ready to catch a school bus is a tough question. The answer  will depend on many factors:

  • how old is the child?
  • Will they be travelling alone or with other family or friends?
  • how far the child is travelling?
  • what type of service will they utilise?
  • where are the bus stops?
  • and many other logistical factors.

In addition to the above, it will also greatly depend on the child’s maturity and temperament and equally as much to do with your past experiences and tendency to worry. It is important to acknowledge there is no right answer here, but it is somoething you should research and give a lot of thought to.

The No Child Left Behind Policy, which was introduced after the abduction of Daniel Morcombe, states that children should not be left behind even if they have no fare.

Despite this reassurance my advice is not to rely on this. Provide your child with safety nets, provide them with extra fare money and check often that they have not spent it.

Discuss stranger danger with your child and ensure they are comfortable with the public transport route. Be prepared to scaffold and support this journey at least for the first couple of days. Have “incase” scenarios thought through in the event you can’t pick them up from the other end, or if they miss their bus etc.

A distinctive tension net structure extends high and wide, providing a climbing challenge for kids to explore. As kids cross the undulating surface, the net bobs and bounces, mimicking the rolling waves on the coast.

Below the net, sensory elements enhance the lower-level play experience. Translucent-coloured shapes cast lovely patterns onto the sand below while chill seats and hammocks hang from the net, gently swaying as the net moves.

Adjacent to the net, extraordinary pandanus towers and giant tunnel slides excite the play space. The vibrant seed pods of the pandanus trees native to the coastal area inspired the towers. A mesh-enclosed bridge connects these lofty towers while thrilling tunnel slides provide exciting trips back to the ground.

A cubby with noughts and crosses, bongos and a double toddler slide delivers some fun for younger children much closer to the ground, and a large bank of swings completes the playground.

Imagination Factor at the Adventure Playground

As children climb across the rolling nets, they can imagine they are out at sea. With the salty spray against their faces, they scan the horizon for a land and a safe harbour.

From the tall masts, the first mate announces they can see the shore! The crew scrambles from the ship up the beach to the safety of the tree houses, where they can set up camp.

Accessibility at the Adventure Playground

Electric BBQ and picnic facilities with beach views at Adventure Playground, Northern Parkland, Mooloolaba.

Flat, wide pathways suitable for wheelchairs and prams lead to the playground and along the foreshore with beautiful ocean views. There are accessible toilets with baby change facilities.

The playground features sensory play elements at the ground level. The main climbing net is a bright yellow, which may assist children with low vision.

What We Thought of the Adventure Playground

Underneath the yellow climbing nets at Adventure Playground, Northern Parkland, Mooloolaba.

My kids thought the Adventure Playground was an exciting and well-designed playground in a stunning location.

The rolling climbing nets and the hidden world below them were unique. They provided a fantastic ocean view, while the tall towers and sky bridge were great places for older children to engage in active play. The thought of how amazing the view must be from the top was almost enticing enough to get me to scale the tower, so next time, I’ll wear my play clothes.

Northern Parkland was also a delightful place for us to stop and enjoy a picnic lunch on our day at Mooloolaba.

How to Get to the Adventure Playground

The Adventure Playground at Northern Parkland, can be found on the Mooloolaba Foreshore near Mooloolaba Esplanade and Venning Street, Mooloolaba.

Parking at this popular destination can be congested, especially on weekends and school holidays.

Day Trips from the Sunshine Coast https://brisbanekids.com.au/day-trips-from-the-sunshine-coast/ https://brisbanekids.com.au/day-trips-from-the-sunshine-coast/#respond Fri, 17 May 2024 01:59:59 +0000 https://brisbanekids.com.au/?p=351661 The Sunshine Coast is one of the most stunning coastal areas in south-east Queensland. Filled with glorious beaches, stunning waterholes, tropical rainforests, and numerous other attractions, day trip ideas from the area are endless. If you are staying on the north coast and are looking to explore the surrounding coastline, hinterland, and highlights, these are some of the best day trips from the Sunshine Coast we can recommend.

Day trips from the Sunshine Coast to Montville and Maleny

A large purple chair and gazebos at Maleny Bird World.

Maleny Botanic Gardens and Bird World

Depending on where you are staying on the Sunshine Coast, a 30-minute drive inland will see you arrive at the beautiful townships of Montville and Maleny. Popular destinations for anyone visiting the Sunshine Coast Hinterland, these two quaint mountain attractions ooze old-style, country charm and beauty. Filled with rolling green hills, incredible vistas, cafes, wineries, and plenty of boutique shopping opportunities, it is easy to lose a whole day taking in all that this area has to offer.

Allow time to stroll from one end of Montville’s main street to the other, taking in the many small art galleries, homemade creations, and delicious finds. While in Maleny, you can do a tour of a working dairy, taste their famous fromagerie, and see if you can spot local platypus in Obi Obi Creek.

Explore the Noosa Everglades

Did you know that one of only two everglade environments on Earth (and the only one you can swim in!) can be found on the Sunshine Coast? The Noosa Everglades, a 60km stretch of river and lake systems, offers you a spectacular glide through pure, undisturbed wilderness. Located only 30 minutes from Noosa, the Everglades is a protected area of wetlands located in the Cooloola section of the Great Sandy National Park. A perfect day trip idea for anyone who loves getting lost in nature, the best way to explore the Everglades is by travelling on it. You can join an eco tour or cruise to marvel at this historic waterway from a comfortable, purpose-built vessel, or, if you are keen for a bit of extra exercise, you can even add on a canoe experience.

Visit Kondallila National Park

Located just near Montville in the Blackall Ranges is another adventurous day trip destination you can visit from the Sunshine Coast. Kondallila National Park, home to the infamous Kondallila Falls, is a spot that beckons families that love to immerse themselves in nature. Filled with walking tracks, waterfalls, and wildlife aplenty, the park offers visitors the chance to move at their own pace, exploring all that this very special part of the world has to offer.

The main attraction here is obviously the magnificent Kondallila Falls, though, before falling 80m into the rainforest valley below, Skene Creek gathers in a rock pool with its own 4m waterfall, providing a tranquil spot to cool off and relax. See how many of the over 100 bird species you can spot, wander along boardwalks that weave amongst towering trees, and swim in one of the many rainforest-lined natural rock pools that lie hidden within the park.

Take the Mary Valley Scenic Drive

Discover Queensland’s rural hinterland while taking the Mary Valley Scenic Drive from the Sunshine Coast. Following Tourist Drive 42, you can enjoy a carefree road trip that stretches 52km through the small villages of Kenilworth, Imbil, and Amamoor. Country charm and beauty will be on full display as you weave your way through cattle and macadamia farms, rolling hills, and even rainforests. Stop in at the many historical townships, visit the arts and craft stores, wander through the weekend markets, or picnic by a local swimming hole.

Visit Noosa National Park

Noosa National Park with kids

One of the glittering highlights of the Sunshine Coast has to be Noosa National Park. Pack your swimmers, walking shoes, sunscreen, hat, and beach gear and set yourself up for a full day of sun, surf and nature experiences with the family. Featuring more than 15km of walking tracks, a great way to start your day trip while energy levels are still high is by exploring the national park first. The coastal tracks at the park offer breathtaking outlooks, with gorgeous beaches and rock pools to explore too. While away a few hours paddling in the turquoise waters and playing on the sandy shores, before deciding where and how to enjoy lunch. There is a stretch of restaurants, shops and cafes on the main street of Noosa that is fun to explore, or, alternatively, there is a kiosk in the park selling snacks and light meals. Of course, there are also a multitude of picturesque spots in the national park to spread a picnic out on too!

Play on Lake Weyba

Located only 4km from Noosa Heads, Lake Weyba is part of the Noosa Biosphere Reserve and covers approximately 150,000 hectares of freshwater, estuarine, and terrestrial environments. An easy day trip for families, a visit to the lake is a wildlife enthusiast’s paradise. Teeming with more than 650 species of bird, and with kangaroos hopping freely around the border, it is a spot to unwind, relax, and take in the beautiful surrounds. With a boat ramp and picnic tables scattered beneath the trees, visitors can spread a picnic by the water and enjoy several water sports such as canoeing or kite boarding. There is also a nice foreshore walk or ride you can do, with the loop starting and ending from Lakewood Drive.

Day trip to Bribie Island

The Bribie Island Butterfly House building and entrance.

The only Queensland island connected to the mainland by a bridge, Bribie Island is a day trip idea from the Sunshine Coast that will surprise you with all it has to offer. While most of the island is devoted to national park, the southern tip is inhabited and features plenty of retail, service, and recreational facilities for the local community and visitors alike. Swim in the shallow waters of the Pumicestone Passage, go on a bushwalk, 4WD on the beach, visit the Arts Centre and Seaside Museum, or be mesmerised by a million small fluttering wings at the Bribie Island Butterfly House

4WD beach drive to Rainbow Beach and Double Island Point

Just under two hours’ north of the Sunshine Coast, but still easily visited in a day, lies the delightful Rainbow Beach. Known for its laidback atmosphere and colourful sands, one of the best ways to access the beach is via the Great Beach Drive, a sandy highway that is tackled by 4WD. To access it via Teewah Beach, you will need to take the car ferry across Noosa River from Tewantin. Once at Rainbow Beach, you can make the most of the surf beach, visit Carlo Sand Blow, climb the sand dunes, or simply take in the relaxed small town feels. If you love beach driving, Double Island Point is a little further along and offers spectacular beauty, fishing, and swimming, and you can even hike to its iconic lighthouse and back too.

Explore the Blackall Range Tourist Drive

Another stunning scenic drive that makes for a memorable day trip from the Sunshine Coast is the ever-popular Blackall Range Tourist Drive. Starting in Mooloolaba, this route is for anyone who loves to nestle into their car and take in the stunning landscapes and natural beauty, whilst also stopping off along the way to take in some of the local highlights. Spanning nearly 150km, the drive will wind you around mountains, through quaint country towns, and past spectacular views of the valley and coastline. Stop off at Montville, Maleny and Mapleton, view the towering Kondallila Falls and visit Mary Caincross Scenic Reserve. With so many stunning landscapes to choose from, pack a picnic and relax at your favourite one along the way.

Day trip to the Bunya Mountains

This day trip is one that is best achieved if you set off early in the morning. Located 3 hours west of the Sunshine Coast, the Bunya Mountains may involve a little more travel time in the car than usual day trips, but, if you take the scenic route along the Great Bunya Drive starting at Gympie, you will have plenty to keep you entertained along the way. Home to the second-oldest national park in Queensland, the Bunya Mountains is a combination of rolling mountains, waterfalls, lookouts, rockpools and, of course, Australia’s largest collection of Bunya pines. If your visit coincides with the last Sunday of the month, try to find time to visit the Bunya Mountains Community Markets, where you can grab a bag of Bunya nuts and enjoy a wide range of local handmade goods and produce.

Soak up the sun on Redcliffe Peninsula

Redcliffe lagoon_Island 3

A short drive south from the Sunshine Coast is the Redcliffe Peninsula, which is a day trip filled with different attractions and activities that will cater for your whole family. Watch the pelican feeding at Pelican Park, cool down in the tranquil waters of Redcliffe Lagoon, fish off Woody Point jetty, and spend some time at one of the many protected beaches that line the coastline here. With restaurants and shops at all of the seaside towns, there are numerous options when it comes to eating (although enjoying some salty fish and chips in the park or by the beach is probably one of the most popular choices for those who visit!). If you visit in September, the skies will come alive with the annual Redcliffe KiteFest, and the colourful weekend markets are a must-see too.
