When is the strawberry season?
The main strawberry picking season in Brisbane is between May and October. Strawberry picking is a lovely way to get out into the winter sunshine and is an activity that kids of all ages will find fun and rewarding.
Check out your local farms for their specific strawberry season dates and open times. It is always a good idea to call in advance as weather conditions can affect the crop yield, and unexpectedly hungry pickers can reduce the availability.
Pick your own strawberries for fun and food!
When you arrive at the strawberry farm go with a plan. What do you plan to do with the strawberries you plan to pick? Strawberries make the perfect gift, whether to a neighbour, family, friend or teacher OR you just include it in your children’s lunchboxes for the following week. You will find the strawberries you pick yourselves, taste better and last longer than berries you would buy in a supermarket.

Our tips for an amazing strawberry picking experience
- You cannot eat strawberries as you pick them. With this in mind, share this news before you get to the strawberry fields. If you wait until you get there, we found, that the kids were so excited by what they saw, that all rules went in one ear and out the other.
- Wear gumboots if possible or prepare for dirty shoes.
- Bring a dirty shoe bag to put in dirty gumboots and shoes before you get back in the car (you will thank us for this one later)
- If it is a sunny day, wear hats. Aside from sun safety, strawberry picking can be hard work!
- Get there early. If you get there at the beginning of the day you will find the rows of strawberries yet to be picked
- Follow the instructions to ensure everyone has a safe and fun time
- Wash your strawberries before you eat them!
- Many (if not all) of the strawberry fields offer their own special strawberry ice cream using freshly picked strawberries. Take an esky so you can take some home with you.

It wouldn’t be the Ekka without an iconic strawberry sundae, with around 140,000 icecreams sold every Ekka, the profits going towards Prince Charles Hospital Fund which has funded about $11 million in research over the past 20 years.
