  • AboutBrisbane Kids Creative was created by me! Ngaire Stirling. I wont pretend to talk in the third person about myself, instead let me tell you a bit about me and how 110.232.142.129/~brisba22 came about. At the time the domain name 110.232.142.129/~brisba22 came up for purchase I was a stay at home mum in the middle of a degree centred around journalism and PR. a couple of years earlier I had been contemplating returning to my previous career in marketing management and for a while I even tried. 3 months into a new role and it was clear that I had no passion for my old life and to make the decision to quit easier, my almost 2 year old at the time was not coping with childcare. So, as a family we made the decision for me to return to becoming a stay at home mum. About 1 years later or so.. 110.232.142.129/~brisba22 came up for sale. My friends had often commented on my ability to know exactly what was happening in Brisbane for kids. I had my son enrolled in some awesome activities and we often visited some great destinations. I loved finding fun things for us to do…

Easter Craft | Hatching Egg and Alphabet Learning Pegs

Last updated: March 12, 2018
Easter Craft

At Brisbane Kids we know that little hands love to create (mess) and that, as parents, the idea of setting them up with a craft project for some can be….shall we say….a little anxiety-inducing?  Indeed, mention a kids craft and most of us are envisioning a confetti of materials on the floor, cuts from scissors in anything but where they should be and glue on almost everything else, including our child.  Well, this is where we have you covered.  Below is a simple, fun and absolutely adorable Easter craft that your children can have fun creating and then playing with after.  It can also be modified into a great educational learning tool for the kids as well.  Below are some simple steps to creating both hatching egg and alphabet learning peg craft.

Egg Hatching Peg

Easter Craft

What you need:

  • Paper
  • Pens and pencils (to draw and colour in chicken)
  • Peg
  • Scissors
  • Craft Glue

Step 1:

Draw an egg shape on a piece of white paper and cut this out.  Ask your child (or you can do this if they are too young) to cut a jagged line across the middle so that the egg is in two parts.

Step 2:

Get your child to draw the head of a chicken on some yellow card.  They can colour or decorate it however they desire.

Step 3:

Easter Craft

Carefully cut the chicken head and body out.  When you do, make sure you allow for a small joined tab to the right of the body (this is will be the section or tab that you glue to the peg so that you don’t lose of the chicken when gluing it on). N.B. You can see this more clearly described in the next section for the alphabet pegs.

Step 4:

Glue the top and bottom sections of the egg to the front of the peg so that when it is closed they are joined neatly together (see image above).

Step 5:

Glue the tab section of the cut out chicken to the back of the peg, behind the egg.  By having the chicken stuck the back of the peg and the egg on the front you will never have the egg get stuck on the chicken when it closes as they are actually not directly under each other.

Step 6:

Have fun opening and closing the peg and watch as the egg hatches to produce a chicken!

Alphabet Learning Craft

Easter Craft

What you need:

  • Print outs of alphabet squares
  • Print outs of animals or objects that start with the letters of the alphabet OR an image your child has drawn
  • Pegs
  • Scissors
  • Craft Glue

Step 1:

Print out the letters of the alphabet in small squares as well as images of objects that start with them.  You can also add the name of the object you will using for each underneath, as demonstrated below.  Make sure the images you use will be big enough to cover the letter if in front of them.

Easter Craft

Step 2:

Cut out each letter and object.  Make sure that the letter has a section below and to the right of it (like a tab) as this will be used  as the area you will glue to the peg (so that you don’t lose any of the letter in the process).  Cut the objects in half (see below example).

Easter craft

Step 3:

Glue the bottom of the object to the bottom of the peg and the top of the object to the top of the peg so that when the peg is open it opens and when it is closed the object looks normal.

Easter Craft

Step 4:

Glue the alphabet letter to the back of the peg using the tab (but facing the same way) so that when the object opens you can see it clearly from the front.  Hint: test this before you secure it to make sure the letter is central and easy to see when it is open.

And just like that…it’s done!  These are a fun way for your children to learn the alphabet and I guarantee they will be begging you to play with them.
