Jurassic World by Brickman® (Review) https://brisbanekids.com.au/jurassic-world-by-brickman-reviewed/ https://brisbanekids.com.au/jurassic-world-by-brickman-reviewed/#respond Fri, 08 Dec 2023 03:04:22 +0000 https://brisbanekids.com.au/?p=346114 If you mention the word dinosaur, the faces of kids all around the world light up. If you mention dinosaurs AND LEGO® the excitement is out of this world.

At Jurassic World by Brickman dinosaurs and LEGO collide to create a detailed and truly amazing display of creatures, characters and moments from the popular Jurassic World franchise.

From the moment you arrive you will be wowed by the sheer scale and detail of the LEGO builds. Using over six million LEGO bricks (that’s is a lot of bricks), more than 50 large-scale dinosaurs, scenes and props are on display and waiting for dino (and LEGO) fans.

As you move through the various areas, each space focuses on a particular theme or activity from exploring the Isla Nublar, getting busy in the Lab, seeing the cute baby dinos in the petting zoo and even watching footage on how the exhibition came to life.

Jurassic World by Brickman Highlights

Two children standing in front of the Jurassic World gates at Jurassic World by Brickman.

  • Entering through the 4m tall Jurassic World gates
  • Marvelling at Baryonyx – coming in at a massive 4.8m long, over 1.5m wide, 2.5m high and weighing 400kg
  • Posing with two life-sized Velociraptors
  • Walking underneath the huge Brachiosaurus
  • Patting the baby dinosaurs in the petting zoo
  • Examining the three Pteranodons floating above you to notice the different techniques used in building them (this one is for LEGO nerds – studs up, studs down and studs sideways)
  • Sitting in the getaway car (Jeep) and escaping the one tonne T-rex
  • Getting hands on at one of the many stations where you can build your own creations

Hands-On Activities at Jurassic World by Brickman

A boy making a LEGO build at Jurassic World by Brickman.

There is no shortage of hands-on activities at Jurassic World by Brickman. In fact, building, creating and touching (where permitted) is strongly encouraged.

In The Lab guests can head to a building station where they are required to build a specific 6×6 plate. Once completed this mini build will be strategically placed on the wall to eventually create a mosaic – I wonder what it will be?

There is also the opportunity to:

  • Build and display your own DUPLO baby dinosaur
  • Create your own island or add to someone else’s
  • Build and display your own hybrid dinosaur creation
  • Race against the clock (and your family and friends) to create a dinosaur footprint
  • Build and race your very own escape vehicle.

Photo Opportunities at Jurassic World by Brickman

A family posing in the Jeep at Jurassic World by Brickman.

Make sure you bring your phone or camera to take lots of photos throughout the exhibition. The dinosaurs are very photogenic!

There are three photo opportunities in particular which are fun and destined to be a hit with the kids:

  • standing at the entrance gates of Jurassic Park
  • sitting in the Jeep with a massive T-rex in hot pursuit
  • posing with dinosaurs Blue and Delta among the foliage.

There is even handy signage on the floor, so you know where to stand for the best photo.

FUN FACT: When Brickman was building part of the T-rex’s mouth (with his head actually in the mouth) he bumped his head on one of the dino’s sharp teeth and required SIX stitches!)

Hidden Elements at Jurassic World by Brickman

Two signs asking for help to find two mini figures at Jurassic World by Brickman.

The beauty of anything Brickman creates is the attention to detail.  Storytelling elements and hidden gems have been cleverly incorporated within the builds to enhance the visitor’s experience. As you move through the exhibition, take your time, looking at all facets of the builds.

Like most Brickman exhibitions, Jurassic World by Brickman has an added ‘hidden’ element to discover.

Visitors are invited to find the Claire and Owen mini figures who are ‘lost’ within the exhibition. How many can you find? Submit your answer by scanning the QR code at the exhibition, for your chance to win.

HINT: You need to look quite high to find several of them.

Star Wars fans – apparently there is an Ewok hidden in one of the builds in the first room – can you find it? We searched for ages and still couldn’t locate it.

Fast Facts – Jurassic World by Brickman

Over six million LEGO bricks were used in making the displays.

There are more than 50 incredible LEGO sculptures and scenes on display from Jurassic World

Both DUPLO and LEGO bricks are used throughout the exhibition

Jurassic World by Brickman is the largest exhibition the Brickman team have ever created, taking over two years and 10,000 build hours to create.

What We Thought of Jurassic World by Brickman

A baby dinosaur at Jurassic World by Brickman.

Miss 9 found the baby dinosaurs in the petting zoo adorable, but also loved hopping in the Jeep and posing for a photo.

Mr 10 loved anything that required you to get your hands among the bricks. He particularly enjoyed trying to beat the clock (and his father) building dinosaur footprints, which he then proudly placed on the display wall.

Us adults were enthralled reading the stats on each build and could have spent hours looking at the intricate details of what was on display. We may have also got rather competitive trying to locate the Claire and Owen mini figures around the exhibit!

Overall, our LEGO loving family thoroughly enjoyed this latest exhibition from Brickman. The skill on display was phenomenal. Make sure you take the time to watch the time lapse and video on how the exhibition was built. It is fascinating to see what is involved by so many people in putting this amazing LEGO exhibition together.

TIP: Don’t forget to check out the display of Jurassic World and Jurassic Park LEGO sets outside the exhibition.

Things to Consider

  • Entry to the Queensland Museum is free, though you must have a paid ticket to enter the Brickman exhibition.
  • A lot of time and effort has gone into building the LEGO masterpieces, so be respectful and obey the signs.
  • There is no eating or drinking allowed in the exhibit, so make sure your children have had something to eat before you head in.
  • The exhibition area is broken up into separate areas, making visibility a bit tricky, so keep a close eye on your children at all times.
  • There are little steps available for smaller children, to help them get some extra height, but they must be returned to the step area when finished with.
  • Hand sanitiser is located throughout the exhibition for all to use, but as always, if you are unwell, please stay home.

Accessibility

Queensland Museum welcomes all visitors. Jurassic World by Brickman can be found on Level 3, though there is a lift, escalators, and stairs available. Displays are spaced out, with ample room to manoeuvre wheelchairs, if required.

Accessible toilets and a family room are located on Level 0 and Level 2.

Queensland Museum recognises the Queensland Government’s Companion Card program.

Want More Dinosaurs?

While visiting Jurassic World by Brickman at the museum, make sure you head down to Level 2 and explore dinosaurs further at the permanent and free exhibition, Dinosaurs Unearthed. You can then duck outside to the Dinosaur Garden to marvel at the massive, life-sized T-rex and Triceratops.

Tickets for Jurassic World by Brickman

From family-friendly parks to vibrant city spots, these places capture the show’s essence and showcase Brisbane’s charm.

Bluey Locations to Visit in Brisbane

South Bank, South Brisbane

bluey, southbank arbour

Episode: Ice Cream

Brissy locals love South Bank and now it appears even the fictional variety is obsessed with it too. In the ‘Ice Cream’ episode, Bluey’s family spend an entire day here, cooling down at the iconic Streets Beach and Aquativity areas and playing beneath the picturesque South Bank Arbour.

The Wheel of Brisbane and QPAC, South Brisbane

Episode: Ice Cream

In the same episode where Bluey hits South Bank there are other well-known Brisbane landmarks that you can take your own kids to as well.  Watch for shots of both the Wheel of Brisbane and QPAC.

Wynnum Whale Park

Wynnum Whale Park, Bluey

Episode: Pass the Parcel

Wynnum Whale Park is one of our favourite bayside destinations and we love that this fun, family-friendly area also features in Bluey. Although not precisely the same, in ‘Pass the Parcel, ‘ the park where Buddy holds his birthday party is also a playground by the sea, featuring low-to-grown spurting whales and plenty of shaded seating gazebos.

New Farm Park

Rotunda at New Farm Park.

Episode: Spy Game

New Farm Park is the home of many a family picnic, and for the Bluey family it is no different.  In the episode ‘Spy Game’ you can spot many of the park’s well-known landmarks, including the Brisbane Powerhouse and Rotunda. Any budding ballerina may even want to emulate Bingo’s classic ballet moves while visiting this central feature.

Brisbane International Airport

Episode: Curry Quest

The terminal which Bandit is shown flying out of in ‘Curry Quest’ is directly designed off of Brisbane’s International Terminal, including its arrivals hall. Incredibly busy, the airport’s long winding ramp up to drop off and pick up zones is a dead giveaway!

If you have a few hours layover in Brisbane you might benefit from finding some playgrounds located near Brisbane airport

Benjamin Place Park

Episode: Turtleboy

Benjamin Place Park in The Gap gets its very own special mention in the ‘Turtleboy’ episode of Bluey.  Only small, the park’s swing set and surrounding park area is the setting for this beautiful episode where Bingo and Dougie play separately.

The Gap

bluey, the gap

Episode: Pass the Parcel

Residents of the Brisbane suburb, The Gap, must be pretty chuffed that they reside in the suburb that closely resembles the area that Bluey’s family (and friends) may live.  Not only does the surrounding suburb in scenes strike familiar, in ‘Pass the Parcel’ Missy’s invite shows the words ‘The Gap’.  Just 10km west of Brisbane, a drive through the area is like you are heading to their house for a playdate.

Hammerbarn

bunnings, bluey hammerbarn

Episode: Hammerbarn

Hammerbarn, the hardware store in the Bluey episode with the same name, is a direct copy of the Bunnings Warehouse in Keperra.  Even the logo – the symbol of a hammer – resembles the Bunnings one.

Ashgrove Library

ashgrove library, bluey

Episode: Promises

Next time you feel like visiting one of the Brisbane City Libraries, maybe take your Bluey-obsessed family to the one at Ashgrove. In the episode ‘Promises’, the whole family visit the library and the one they go to has been modelled off Ashgrove library.  Even the cafe and playground in the episode exist in real life – with just a few minor changes.

Hill End Terrace Park West End

oreleigh park, bluey

Episode: Seesaw

Another Brisbane playground that gets an authentic replica in Bluey is Hill End Terrace Park in West End. Its standout features, which include a giant frog whose long pink tongue forms one of the playground’s slides and some storybook murals, can be seen in the cartoon.

Wittonga Park

Wittonga Park scooter track whole track.

Episode: Cricket

The birthday party in ‘Cricket’ takes place at Wittonga Park in The Gap and the crew from Bluey did a fantastic job replicating it. From the central cricket pitch to the winding pathways, the gazebo and benches – even the sloped-roofed toilet block is a match!

We think it won’t be long before even more famous Brisbane landmarks, natural attractions and favourite hotspots are spotted in future Bluey episodes. Watch this space and please comment below with any new ones so we can include them in the article!

Disney on Ice – Brisbane https://brisbanekids.com.au/disney-on-ice-brisbane/ https://brisbanekids.com.au/disney-on-ice-brisbane/#respond Mon, 10 Jul 2023 18:44:21 +0000 https://brisbanekids.com.au/?p=314310 There is no denying Disney is super popular among families young and old, with many loveable characters to have graced our screens over the years. In 2023, Disney on Ice presents 100 Years of Wonder, which celebrates some of Disney’s most famous stories and characters bringing them to life on the ice rink.

Disney on Ice: 100 Years of Wonder

Disney on Ice skating rink.

When Tinker Bell is captured by Captain Hook and his pirates, it is up to Benji and Isabella to help set her free, with the help of various Disney characters and the audience of course.

Audience participation is high throughout the performance with the crowd invited to call out, sing, dance and snap selfies in order to fill the ‘magic meter’ and in order to free Tinker Bell.

Guests will be taken on an exciting journey through several Disney worlds including those from Coco, Moana, Aladdin, Beauty and the Beast, Little Mermaid, Toy Story and Frozen.

Disney on Ice cast at finale.

Each new scene is introduced subtly, prompting the crowd to try and guess which story will be presented next. Then, once the music starts it is all systems go.  There is plenty of action as the performers, in fabulous costumes, whizz around the rink and fly through the sky, while songs that will be familiar to many fill the air.

Not only will you bear witness to the world-class talent displayed by the ice skaters, but you will also marvel at the amazing acrobatics and stunts, both on the ground and in the air (we may have held our breath a few times during the aerial stunts!)

Who Will Enjoy Disney on Ice?

Mickey Mouse and friends skating at Disney on Ice.

Whether you are a long-time Disney fan or someone who is just discovering the magic of Disney, Disney on Ice will be sure to entertain and excite all who attend.

The children will enjoy the crowd interaction and Disney super-fans will no doubt know all the words, to all the songs and be happy singing and dancing throughout the performance.

Children, teenagers, adults and even grandparents will enjoy Disney on Ice (even if the cool teenagers won’t admit it). There is no mistaking the talent on display from the performers and the effort that goes into bringing Disney to life on the ice.

Disney on Ice – Is It Worth It?

Brisbane and other capital cities are fortunate to be host to many shows and concerts throughout the year, and as such families need to be mindful about which performances to attend. If you are wondering whether Disney on Ice is worth attending, I would whole heartedly say yes!

Disney on Ice is a wonderful family-friendly show, which is appropriate for all-ages. There is superb ice skating, marvellous music, spectacular choreography and brilliant costumes which creates a magnificent atmosphere while celebrating the magic of Disney.

Beauty and the Beast characters at Disney on Ice.

At Brisbane Kids we love the idea of gifting experiences. Attending a show such as Disney on Ice will be etched in the memory of all who attend and the best bit is – no clutter! Tickets are reasonably priced given the length of the show and the quality of the performance, making it a brilliant event for families and friends to attend or a wonderful experience to gift to someone special.

If you are planning on attending with younger children, consider the timing of shows. The performance lasts for approximately two hours, making evening shows a very late night for tired little guests. Morning and afternoon shows may be more suitable for these age-groups.

What We Thought of Disney on Ice

Toy Story characters at Disney on Ice.

Our family, which includes an 8- and 10-year-old, were excited to attend our very first Disney on Ice. While we are not massive Disney fans, and haven’t seen many of the movies, we were keen to see what all the hype was about.

From the moment the lights dimmed and the performers zoomed onto the ice rink, we were well and truly engrossed in the performance. Miss 8 didn’t take her eyes off the performers and really enjoyed seeing the talented skaters manoeuvre their way around the rink. It ignited her interest for ice skating and we now are making plans to test out our own skating skills

Mr 10 was a little less enthusiastic, though afterwards on the car ride home, admitted to enjoying the show and commented on who good the skaters were.

Little Mermaid skaters at Disney on Ice.

As parents, we both appreciated the effort that went into the costumes (our faves were the Little Mermaid). We were absolutely amazed, and slightly terrified, at the skill displayed by the artists who were floating, spinning and gliding through the air and regularly gasped and held our breath. We need not have worried though, the talented performers didn’t put a foot wrong.

We all agreed that Hamm from Toy Story was the cutest character on stage, while the colourful costumes from Little Mermaid where simply stunning. It was very clever how the various sea creatures were portrayed.

Our Top Tips for Attending Disney on Ice

  • Choose a suitable performance time – consider children’s ages and sleep schedules.
  • Get into the spirit of things by dressing up as your favourite Disney character.
  • It can get a little chilly throughout the performance so dress accordingly.
  • There is an intermission so bring a snack and water (or purchase some) for hungry tummies.
  • Merchandise stalls are dotted around the venue, so if you are looking to purchase some Disney merchandise, arrive early to avoid the queues.

Mary Poppins Musical Brisbane Review https://brisbanekids.com.au/mary-poppins-musical-review/ https://brisbanekids.com.au/mary-poppins-musical-review/#respond Wed, 21 Dec 2022 23:24:18 +0000 https://brisbanekids.com.au/?p=302793 Mary Poppins. Ever since that clever, magical and musical nanny floated down to the Banks’ family doorstep and into our hearts, it has been a story that has been loved the world around by audiences of all ages.

For this writer, it is no different, and so an invite for my family and I, to review the hit musical was something we could not resist. Read our review of the Mary Poppins musical below.

What is the Mary Poppins Story?

Mary Poppins Musical, Brisbane, QPAC

Unless you have been under a rock for the last century, it would be hard not to have been previously introduced to the magical world of Mary Poppins. Originally a series of eight children’s books written by Australian-British writer P. L. Travers and published from 1934 to 1988, the books were eventually made into a movie by the same name in 1964. Starring beloved actress Julie Andrews, it became an instant worldwide phenomenon.

Mary Poppins is a story about the Banks family, an upper-class British family who seem to have everything together regarding wealth and material possessions but emotionally are falling apart. The father, George, works endless hours at a bank to support his family whilst his wife, Winifred, lives the dutiful and doting social calendar expected of someone of their status.

They have servants and an endless string of nannies hired to look after their two children, Jane and Michael. Largely unseen by their parents, the kids get up to all sorts of trouble. When yet another nanny leaves due to their mischievous behaviour, an ad is answered by nanny Mary Poppins.

Through games, magic and song, Mary helps to reconnect the family, where they discover the most important thing in life is indeed the family that surrounds them.

The Mary Poppins Musical

Mary Poppins Musical, Brisbane, QPAC, Jack Chambers

Adapted from the beloved stories by PL Travers and the original film, the smash hit Mary Poppins musical takes elements from both mediums to create the stage production. Not a direct translation from the film alone, the multi-award-winning and critically acclaimed Mary Poppins musical is co-created by Cameron Mackintosh, with a book by the Academy Award®-winning screenwriter Julian Fellowes.

Although there are a few musical adaptations created for the stage production, audiences will be able to sing along to many of the timeless Mary Poppins musical favourites, including “Jolly Holiday”, “Step in Time”, “Feed the Birds” and “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious”. New songs and additional music and lyrics have been created by the Olivier award-winning British team of George Stiles and Anthony Drew, including the now celebrated classics “Practically Perfect” and “Anything Can Happen”.

Set on stage at QPAC’s Lyric Theatre, the Brisbane musical features an array of talent, including actors Stefanie Jones as Mary Poppins, local dancing superstar Jack Chambers as Bert, Tom Wren as George and Lucy Maunder as Winifred. The two children, who feature heavily in most scenes, are played by eight different male and female young actors. Patti Newton is also playing the much-loved bird lady in the Brisbane production.

Our Mary Poppins Musical Review

Mary Poppins Musical, Brisbane, QPAC

It was hard not to come into this musical with high expectations for something spectacular. An avid fan of Julie Andrews’ Mary Poppins, my kids also grew up watching the film and are known to sing favourites like “Just A Spoon Full of Sugar”, “Feed The Birds” and “Supercalafragalisticexpeladocious” just as loudly as me. So, the question was, would the musical provide just as much magic as the film did for us? The answer? A resounding YES!

The minute the curtain lifted and the stage lit up; we knew we were in for a special treat. The staging was an absolute highlight of the show for me, with elaborate and beautifully designed sets rising to greet us. The Banks’ house resembled a towering dollhouse, with the entire two storeys opening up from the front to reveal the incredible interior, sliding backwards and forwards depending on the scene, and even spinning to reveal a complete house structure and back kitchen room at one point. The house, the kids’ bedroom (which lowered down from above when needed), and the hauntingly beautiful park were all spectacular.

Unfamiliar with the books, I was surprised by some of the small changes and adaptations in the musical, but I loved them all too. One, which involved one of the children’s toys coming to life and towering over the bedroom, was in some ways spooky but also my children’s favourite scene due to the scale and animation of the toys.

Mary Poppins Musical, Brisbane, QPAC

The talent of all those on stage was evident, with incredible vocals from all being a stand-out. Stefanie Jones was practically perfect as Mary Poppins and Jack Chambers was mesmerising as the cheeky but lovable Bert – his pedigree as an amazing dancer being showcased as he tapped and spun his way through the musical.

The children who played Jane and Michael also did an incredible job, as did the actors playing their parents. Some of my favourite scenes in the movie were the ones that involved the bird lady, and Patti Newton was simply brilliant in this part. Other stand-outs were Miss Andrew, the bad nanny, and the comical duo of Mrs Brill and Robertson.

Overall, we came away with nothing but praise for this performance. We loved singing along to all of our favourite songs and joined the enthusiastic audience who also clapped and sung along throughout.

My kids loved the whole thing, particularly the brilliant way Mary’s magic was brought to life through clever staging and props and the amazing dancing. Keep an eye out for a scene where Bert tap dances his way up the sides and upside down along the roof of the stage!

If you haven’t had a chance to see this musical yet, then please, do yourself a favour and book some tickets. I guarantee you will have an experience you won’t forget and, regardless if you are a fan from decades ago, you will no doubt leave as one after watching the show. After all, it is practically perfect in every way!

What to Expect at a Brisbane Play School Concert https://brisbanekids.com.au/what-expect-brisbane-play-school-concert/ https://brisbanekids.com.au/what-expect-brisbane-play-school-concert/#respond Tue, 06 May 2014 02:40:30 +0000 http://brisbanekids.com.au/?p=73326 Have you ever taken your Brisbane Kid to a Play School Concert? Or maybe you’re about to? We explain why seeing this iconic television show live in concert is a rite of passage for every child…

An ABC TV Favourite

If you grew up in Australia, you would undoubtedly have watched at least one episode of Play School in your life. Even if you didn’t, you can probably sing the theme song! After 48 years of production, it is the longest running children’s show in Australia, with 80 percent of children aged under six years watching at least one episode per week.

The show combines educational elements with fun and games as it encourages children to wonder, to think, to feel and to imagine. The two presenters sing songs, make crafts, cook food and act out stories with the age-defying toy stars – Big Ted, Little Ted, Jemima and Humpty.

Play School show Brisbane

Create Childhood Memories

In 2014, the Brisbane shows featured Andrew McFarlane and Emma Palmer – both accomplished actors that understand the importance of Play School in the lives of the children who watch it.

“Like lots of Australian kids, I grew up watching Big Ted, Little Ted, Jemima and Humpty,” Emma says. “When I arrived to my first Play School rehearsal I got to meet Meeka in real life which was so wonderful! She is such fun to play with. I really enjoy helping kids use their imaginations.”

Andrew agrees that contributing to children’s imagining and learning is a perk of the job, as is revisiting his own childhood memories.

“That’s why I love being on Play School,” Andrew explains. “Free range in the lending library of childhood! I love revisiting these early formative years. I still remember mine vividly. The wonder of new stories; the excitement of creating magical forms from simple everyday things; the freedom of singing, of playing, and the insatiable appetite of the imagination. It’s great to think that I’m contributing to other children’s imagining and learning and having such fun myself!”

Brisbane Play School Concert

How Long is the Show?

As with the television program, everything in the concert is carefully paced for children and only runs for 40 minutes. There are songs to move to, as well as quiet times to just watch and listen. The familiarity of the material and the presenters means that the young audience is totally engaged, and audience participation is wholeheartedly encouraged!

So what can you expect? It does get busy and noisy, and you’ll need to get there early if you want a close car park and a seat up the front. There is some seating provided, but most adults and children will find a place to sit on the floor. Throughout the show, children will be on their feet as they’re encouraged to dance along to their favourite nursery rhymes and songs. You may even find yourself doing the wiggly woo!

Meet Play School Friends

There’s merchandise for sale afterwards, and sometimes an opportunity to meet the presenters and have them autograph your Play School products. The set, props and costumes are very simple, which keeps costs down and makes this an affordable show for families.

Keep an eye on the Brisbane Kids Event Calendar and on our Facebook page for upcoming Play School concerts in Brisbane, or visit the Kids Promotions website to buy tickets for the current show.

Is The Ballet Child Friendly? https://brisbanekids.com.au/taking-your-little-ballerina-to-the-ballet-in-brisbane-top-five-tips-for-ballet-with-your-babies/ https://brisbanekids.com.au/taking-your-little-ballerina-to-the-ballet-in-brisbane-top-five-tips-for-ballet-with-your-babies/#respond Tue, 12 Mar 2013 12:40:16 +0000 http://brisbanekids.com.au/?p=24343 If the number of ballet schools in Brisbane is anything to go by, this is a city that loves to dance! Whether they attend a formal dance class or simply love to spin around the lounge room in a tutu, many children find the experience of attending a professional ballet performance nothing short of magical.

Traditional ballets on stage can be rather long, with complex storylines making it difficult for youngsters to fully appreciate the event. Before you rush to the box office, consider our five top tips for taking your babies to the ballet.

1. Choose the right ballet for your child

The Nutcracker ballet at QPAC

The Nutcracker ballet at QPAC

Ballet performances vary greatly in length, style and subject matter. Traditional ballets – like the famous Swan Lake – can be a few hours long, including quiet, drawn-out scenes and adult themes. The Australian Ballet suggests that children should be over 6 years old to attend a full-length performance; but, as every child is individual, planning ahead is the key.

Use the theatre’s website to investigate the length of a performance, whether there are any intervals, and whether there are any scenes that might frighten younger ballet fans. If you are concerned your little one may not last the distance of a full length production, keep an eye out (especially on school holidays) for a family-friendly alternative.

Some theatre companies stage shorter performances based on popular fairy tales or using pop music to demonstrate the art form in a way that’s more accessible for youngsters, such as the Australian Ballet’s Storytime Ballet series.

2. Understanding the story

Wizard of Oz Brisbane City Youth Ballet dancers, the lion, tinman, dorothy, scarecrow, ballerinas

The Wizard of Oz, performed by the Brisbane City Youth Ballet

Once you’ve decided which Brisbane ballet performance you will attend, you may like to prepare your children with some background information. If the ballet is based on a popular story (like Sleeping Beauty, for example), make sure your little ballerinas are familiar with the plot before you go.

Watching a ballet can be confusing for some children if they’re not used to experiencing a story told through dance, so knowing the storyline in advance can really help comprehension. You may also like to prepare your youngsters for the style of ballet they are going to see. Some contemporary ballets, for example, don’t make use of the traditional ballerina costumes your little ones may be longing to see.

3. Timing is everything

Storytime Ballet The Sleeping Beauty

Australian Ballet – Storytime Ballet: The Sleeping Beauty

Most Brisbane ballet performances will be shown at a range of times and dates. Busy family life may limit your choice of when you can attend a show, but, where possible, consider what time of day is going to allow your child the best chance of enjoying the experience. It may seem like a nice idea to dress up for a night out, but if your little one is already yawning before the curtains go up they’re unlikely to be smiling at the finale.

4. Teach your child what’s expected at the ballet

brisbane ballet classes

Children need to understand how to behave at the theatre and how to best appreciate their Brisbane ballet excursion. In the days leading up to the performance, consider doing a little performing of your own by pretending you’re at the ballet! Through the safety of imaginary play, it’s possible to remind little ones of the importance of whispering, concentrating, and staying in their seats. For older children, you can just talk to them about what other theatre-goers may expect of them at the ballet.

5. During the performance

Children love to interact with a performance and there’s a good chance your little one will want to ask questions or point out their favourite costumes, especially if it’s their first time at a Brisbane ballet. Other patrons may accommodate a few whispered queries, but if your mini ballerina becomes fidgety or talkative, it is considerate to take them outside for a break and return when they’re ready to concentrate.

Keep an eye on the time and make the most of intervals for stretching and grabbing a drink or snack. You may even consider bringing along a book or other quiet activity for your child to enjoy in their seat if they lose interest in the ballet. This might work especially well if you have a book of the same storyline as the performance.

A trip to the ballet in Brisbane can be magical for parents and children alike, but remember that attending a traditional ballet can require your child to sit still and quiet for a very long time! Use these five top tips to prepare your little ballerinas for their trip to a Brisbane ballet and you’re sure to have a memorable and enjoyable experience.

With its often vibrant costumes, amusing characters and sometimes interactive storylines, seeing a pantomime in Brisbane is sure to delight your child.

What is Pantomime?

Pantomime is a type of stage production that has been specially designed for family entertainment. Usually of a musical comedy genre and based on fairy tales, pantomimes were developed in England in the 1800s and are strongly influenced by Roman ‘commedia dell’arte’, the Italian tradition of improvised theatre. Pantomimes (or ‘pantos’, as they are affectionately known) are extremely popular throughout the United Kingdom to this day, with Christmas pantomimes being a long-standing family tradition.

Whilst pantomimes started out as silent performances where the story was portrayed through gestures and dance, our current version of the pantomime now also includes slapstick comedy, songs and gags. Part of the comedy tradition of pantomime was gender-swapping roles, with women playing male roles and vice versa. Audience participation often forms a very big part of the pantomime experience, with viewers encouraged to respond or warn the performers when the ‘villain’ is close by, and even sing along in certain parts of the performance.

Christmas Pantomimes

Annual Christmas TV pantomimes also became popular in Australia the early days of television in the 1960s, with many local acts going on to have notable careers after performing in one of these shows. Find out more about the history of Christmas TV pantomimes here.
