The Butterfly Man of Kuranda: The Dodd Collection
A precious collection of insects will go on display at Queensland Museum from 28 July 2023 until 14 April 2024 in an exhibition called The Butterfly Man of Kuranda: The Dodd Collection.
Frederick Dodd, known as ‘The Butterfly Man of Kuranda’, was an Australian naturalist who dedicated the later years of his life to entomology. He recognised the beauty, complexity and fragility of nature, which was epitomised by his display cases.
Queensland Museum Network holds 42 beautifully arranged showcases made by Dodd and his family from 1917 through to the 1960s. The Dodd Collection is a significant part of the State Collection with some specimens more than 100 years old.
Queensland Museum Network CEO Dr Jim Thompson said the insects will be displayed on rotation to preserve them for future generations.
The Dodd Collection is available online as a virtual exhibition on the Queensland Museum website now. But nine showcases at a time will be on display at Level 2 Queensland Museum from 28 July 2023 – 14 April 2024.
