Now we know antiques shopping and kids might seem like an unlikely pairing but with an open mind and sense of curiosity, it could just be the unique Brisbane family outing you’ve been searching for. So gather up your little treasure hunters and head straight to Empire Revival (previously known as the Paddington Antique Centre) to immerse yourself in some history and maybe uncover a hidden gem or two.
What You Will Find at Empire Revival
Housed in the historic Plaza Theatre, the originally named Paddington Antique Centre has been a part of the Brisbane cultural landscape and vintage shopping scene since its conception in 1985.
Upon entering under the vibrant, red sign you’ll immediately notice the grand plaster ceilings of cobalt blue and lavish decorations that’ll instantly transport you to another world.
The over 1000 square metres of space is absolutely jam packed with a wondrous assortment of trinkets, collectables, retro fashion, unique homewares, well loved books and toys that have stood the test of time.
Book worms will delight in the secret room of books known as “The Cupboard Under the Stage” while mini fashionistas will be right in their element surrounded by gorgeous, old costumes and one of a kind items.
With over 50 merchants in the centre and differently themed sections to explore you could easily spend an hour or so admiring the countless treasures on offer. Each corner turned unveils a new bunch of surprises which truly creates a sense of adventure and offers an unforgettable shopping experience that feels like an escape from the every day.
Accessibility at Empire Revival
The main shop floor at Empire Revival is flat however the store is not particularly wheelchair or pram friendly with narrow pathways lined with hundreds of breakable items. There are also a couple of small sections which can only be accessed via stairs.
There are toilets in the shopping centre precinct for visitors to use.
Why Take the Kids Antique Shopping at Empire Revival
If you’ve got children (and particularly young ones) you’ll most likely hear yourself say “please don’t touch that” and “please don’t run” a hundred times but it’s totally worth it to see the looks on their faces as they explore this magical space.
Bring pocket money along but be mindful that most of the items carry a hefty price tag you might expect from a trendy, inner city antiques store. It was refreshing to step away from our regular playground visits and weekend picnics to try something new and we were rewarded with a fun, intriguing and memorable experience.
Make The Most of Your Day in Paddington
While in Paddington why not combine your trip with a visit to one of the many great cafes in the area like we did at the popular Chapter IV on Latrobe Terrace. We opted for breakfast at this kid friendly cafe that not only has stunning Brisbane city views from its verandah terrace but also a designated children’s play area. The menu also keeps the little ones in mind with some delicious, kid approved meals that come served on adorable, wooden plates and with child safe cutlery.
As for nearby parks, you’re spoiled for choice with the fully fenced Neal Macrossan Park at Paddington, the Train Park and Frew Park at Milton and the always lovely Roma Street Parklands.
