When kids learn to colour-in you will notice that they will simply draw for fun- no rules, hardcore colour. Second stage would have them at the early stages of understanding the supposed rules of colouring in with an attempt to stay in the lines. Once they grow confident with their fine motor skills and less worried about the lines they will begin to get more creative with their colouring, experimenting with textures, shape and colour. Colouring in is a wonderfully safe and free activity for kids.
