  • AboutBrisbane Kids Creative was created by me! Ngaire Stirling. I wont pretend to talk in the third person about myself, instead let me tell you a bit about me and how 110.232.142.129/~brisba22 came about. At the time the domain name 110.232.142.129/~brisba22 came up for purchase I was a stay at home mum in the middle of a degree centred around journalism and PR. a couple of years earlier I had been contemplating returning to my previous career in marketing management and for a while I even tried. 3 months into a new role and it was clear that I had no passion for my old life and to make the decision to quit easier, my almost 2 year old at the time was not coping with childcare. So, as a family we made the decision for me to return to becoming a stay at home mum. About 1 years later or so.. 110.232.142.129/~brisba22 came up for sale. My friends had often commented on my ability to know exactly what was happening in Brisbane for kids. I had my son enrolled in some awesome activities and we often visited some great destinations. I loved finding fun things for us to do…

Hatchery Crusaders Competition

Last updated: October 3, 2019
Turtle art Hatchery Competition

Get creative in your crusade to save marine turtles with the 2020 Hatchery Crusaders competition.

Following on from the success of the World Science Festival Brisbane’s 2019 Hatchery Crusaders competition, this year students and teachers are again invited to get a little creative as they raise awareness for the plight of marine turtles and the impact plastic pollution has on their environment.

What is the Hatchery Crusaders competition about?

The Hatchery Crusaders is an educational program developed by the Queensland Museum as part of their commitment to support and foster STEM-learning in children. An extension of the hugely popular Turtle Hatchery display during World Science Festival Brisbane, the competition aims to highlight just how much plastic and marine debris harms and maims our turtles.

The Hatchery Crusaders is a great starting point for students and teachers to start a conversation about this impact and how they can play a role within their community to help turn the tide.  In 2019, more than 40 schools from around Queensland entered the competition resulting in a range of incredible artwork that held some very powerful messages.

What does your school have to do?

World Science Festival Brisbane turtle art

In the lead up to the 2020 festival, schools are again invited to collect debris from nearby waterways and produce artwork that reflects their learnings about plastic pollution and its impact on marine life.

Last year’s winning entry titled “Time to ‘turn’ the table” was created by St Thomas Moore School on the Sunshine Beach and involved a series of four Perspex cylinders.  Each cylinder contained colour-coordinated debris that was the result of collection from the students in and around Sunshine Beach over a two week period.  Their aim was to bring awareness to the environmental issue of plastics in our oceans and encouraged people to question their own plastic usage and challenged their opinion on the urgent need for change.

What you can win

Not just a fantastic and important learning opportunity for students, there are also a couple of very awesome prizes up for grabs if your school wins the competition.

The winning school will have a special opportunity to name one of the Queensland Museum’s turtle hatchlings, as well as first priority entrance to THE HATCHERY during World Science Festival Brisbane in March 2020.

The finalist artworks will also be showcased during the World Science Festival Brisbane in March 2020 at a Queensland Museum to raise public awareness about the plight of marine turtles.
