There’s something therapeutic about dipping your toes into the water, and at Gardners Falls, you’ll find an adventure to suit most ages, from the shallow wading pools to the excitement of the more extreme rope swings.

Freshwater Swimming and Waterfall Plunges at Gardners Falls

Creek and trees at Gardners Falls in Maleny.

The postcard-perfect Maleny is a natural playground with stunning bush walks and easily accessible natural swimming pools.

Locals particularly favour the cool waters of the Obi Obi Creek and visitors thanks to the generally good visibility and slow-moving flow. Plus, the waterfall is a super, easy walk from the carpark.

Little feet will be met with a rocky creek bottom that can be quite slippery in places and will feel unfamiliar compared to dips in a regular pool. A guiding adult hand might be called upon, but once in the water, they’ll be rewarded with the thrill of the refreshing water and shade of the nearby rainforest canopy.

Water rushing over the waterfall at Gardners Falls in Maleny.

Continuing down the track, you will discover deeper pools where the water meets the cliff’s edge and cascades into a small waterfall. These conditions are suitable for older kids who are confident and strong swimmers, as the environment is less predictable than in the toddler-friendly pools.

On weekends crowds of teenagers and adults flock to the waterfall to test their skills and bravery by leaping into the water below. There are also a couple of unofficial rope swings which allow adrenaline junkies to briefly soar through the air with a variety of twists and turns before plunging into the deep pool.

Caution is strongly advised as conditions are constantly changing making it very difficult to gauge water depth and identify submerged dangers. It’s also steep drop from the top of the cliffs to the water below so adult supervision is an absolute must.

Don’t fret if the water’s a little too cold for your liking or you forgot to pack the togs as this leafy oasis also makes for the perfect picnic location. Although certainly a popular destination for outdoor enthusiasts, there are still plenty of spots to roll out the picnic blanket so it doesn’t feel crowded, and there’s more than enough rainforest for young explorers to share. Try taking a wander into the bush for some nature play and a bit of wildlife spotting while you’re there.

The Gardners Falls Bush Walking Track

Little girl walking on the pathway to Gardners Falls in Maleny.

This short walk is gentle and easy, making it suitable for almost anyone and a great first bush walk for kids. According to the entrance sign, it is only 300 metres from the carpark to Gardners Falls on a wide, flat and partially sealed track.

You’re unlikely to hear any complaints from the kids on this brief walk, but instead, you will be presented with some beautiful scenery and great photo opportunities.

Grassed area by the creek at Gardners Falls in Maleny.

Several picnic tables are dotted along the creekside, offering peaceful spots to pause and take in the view. The last few metres of the path leading to the waterfall can become muddy and uneven, but otherwise, it is largely pram and wheelchair accessible up until this point.

Accessibility at Gardners Falls

Toilet facilities at Gardners Falls in Maleny.

A dozen or so car parks are available at the track’s entrance; however, these fill up quickly, especially during weekends, school holidays and hot summer days. Lucky visitors might also be able to nab on-street parking, although these spots are also somewhat limited.

There is an accessible, singular composting toilet just off the carpark, which can be reached via a wooden ramp. Some of the off-track picnic facilities are located on steep embankments, which does not make them suitable for strollers or those with mobility restrictions.

Remember to pack the insect repellent, sunscreen, a hat and maybe even some aqua shoes. Most importantly, bring plenty of drinking water as the creek water is not considered safe for consumption, and no water bubblers are available.

What We Thought of Gardners Falls

As a family with young children, we loved visiting Gardners Falls as the walk to the falls was short and relatively flat.

It was a peaceful and lovely scenic walk surrounded by well-established trees and water. Stopping for a snack among the trees and a drink of water was a nice way to soak up the sounds of nature.

Other Things to do in Maleny

Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve is also a popular stopoff. It houses a multi-million dollar Rainforest Discovery Centre, a contemporary cafe serving breakfast and lunch, and sweeping views of the spectacular Glasshouse Mountains.

How To Get to Gardners Falls

Gardners Falls is located at the end of Obi Lane South at Maleny, about a 90 minute drive from Brisbane

Note: Obi Lane is a typical country road with dirt shoulders you may need access if two vehicles need to pass on the narrow bitumen. Driving slowly is advisable.

The Sunshine Coast with Kids on a Budget https://brisbanekids.com.au/ways-to-see-the-sunshine-coast-with-kids-on-a-budget/ https://brisbanekids.com.au/ways-to-see-the-sunshine-coast-with-kids-on-a-budget/#respond Mon, 06 Jul 2020 20:00:30 +0000 http://brisbanekids.com.au/?p=46987 Entertaining the kids needn’t be an expensive exercise on the Sunshine Coast. These are a few of our top ideas on how to explore the Sunshine Coast with kids on a budget.

Strawberry picking on the Sunshine Coast

a boy holding strawberries

From around June to November, strawberry farms across the Sunshine Coast open their gates to the public. With no admission fees, you can choose to buy punnets of super fresh strawberries direct from the farm, or spend a bit of time exploring and pick your own for a per punnet fee. It’s a heartening experience for the kids to pick the fruit themselves and you get to take your container home at the end – yum! There are a few different options on where to go and the experience to expect. Some of the fields have cafes and playgrounds so you can easily make a morning or afternoon of your outing. Read all about strawberry picking here.

Take a dairy farm tour

cow, cow encounter at brisbane farm

Particularly in the Sunshine Coast hinterland areas, like Maleny, there are many working farms. Many of these producers open their doors to the public at pre-arranged times. Maleny Dairies offers farm tours (by appointment) where you and your family can meet the baby animals, see the process involved in producing different dairy products and sample their delicious products. Bring a picnic lunch and admire the views of the green pastures. For a list of other farms and producers in the Sunshine Coast area who welcome visitors, check out The Sunshine Coast Regional Food Directory.

Hit the markets

Eumundi Markets Open

There are dozens of markets around the Sunshine Coast featuring products made by local artisans, fresh produce, delicious food, live music and a variety of treasures and nick nacks to discover.  The Eumundi Markets are well worth a visit on Wednesdays and Saturdays, but there are different markets up and down the coast every weekend. Maleny Lane is open 9am to 3pm Wednesday to Sunday, and also 6pm to 9pm on Friday nights.  Click here for a list of Sunshine Coast Markets

A trip to the beach

Coolum beach sunshine coast

Coolum Beach thanks to Visit Sunshine Coast

The beaches on the Sunshine Coast are world-class and there is something for everyone! From calmer swimming spots like Kings Beach at Caloundra, Mooloolaba Beach (the Spit is exceptionally calm for younger Brisbane Kids)  or Main Beach at Noosa, to exploring rock pools at Point Cartwright or Alexandra Headland, there are seemingly endless options.  Pack some buckets and spades for some sandy fun or head to one of the fantastic playgrounds that dot the coast.  Just remember to always swim between the flags.

Take a hike

mary cairncross scenic reserve

There are dozens of beautiful walks dotting the coast to suit all interests and abilities – Buderim Falls (see the feature image), Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve, Noosa National Park – or head to one of the beaches or picturesque hinterland towns for a wander around.  For more adventurous and older Brisbane Kids, the hike up Mount Coolum affords spectacular views of the entire region.

Burn off some energy at a play centre

indoor playground at the sunshine coast

More and more play centres are springing up on the sunny coast, offering a fun-filled outing for kids and the opportunity for parents to sit down for a coffee while watching them play. For your entry fee, you can stay all day, safe in the knowledge that your children are entertaining themselves in a secure environment. Play centres are just perfect for cold and rainy weather when your kiddies need to burn off some energy.

Visit The Ginger Factory in Yandina

Moreton Train Ginger factory

With free admission and so many different things to see and do, you can’t go past The Ginger Factory for a low-cost day out. Whether you are seeking to relax in the tropical gardens or prefer a tour of the delicious smelling chocolate factory, there is something here to interest visitors of all ages. The Ginger Factory is the perfect year-round destination, with fun rides, educational tours and fabulous shopping. Pack a picnic lunch, take the scenic route and stop somewhere along the way to keep this outing on an even tighter budget.

Free school holiday activities on the Sunshine Coast

free holiday program sunshine coast

It can be difficult on the school holidays to keep your children occupied and amused on a budget. Take advantage of the free events in the school holidays at shopping centres and libraries and you’ll avoid boredom and save money as well! There are some awesome activities provided by shopping centres that encompass everything from craft and cooking workshops to sporting clinics. Best of all, these are usually free or very low cost and, anything your child makes, they get to take home. Check out your local shopping centre or library a couple of weeks before the holidays begin, as most require bookings to secure your child’s place.

Make a splash at an aquatic centre

swimming pool laws Queensland

With a variety of pool types to suit your needs and the ages of your children, the Sunshine Coast’s many aquatic centres provide the ideal spot to cool down on a hot day or to burn off some energy on a cold day in one of the heated pools. For a minimal entry fee, you can stay as long as you like. Many of the centres have shaded pools to protect young skin and a selection of classes and activities available, especially in the school holidays. The Sunshine Coast Council has a list of aquatic centres that can be found here.

Things to Do on the Sunshine Coast in Winter https://brisbanekids.com.au/things-to-do-on-the-sunshine-coast-in-winter/ https://brisbanekids.com.au/things-to-do-on-the-sunshine-coast-in-winter/#respond Sun, 02 Jul 2023 01:13:23 +0000 https://brisbanekids.com.au/?p=312086 They don’t call it the ‘Sunshine’ Coast for nothing! The sun is almost always shining on the stunning Sunshine Coast, even in Winter.  A day trip or extended break up the Coast is the perfect escape in cooler months – parks, beaches, bush walks, café’s and more awaits families around every corner.

Pick Your Own Strawberries

mcmartins strawberry farm

Get the whole family involved as you pick your own tasty strawberries at one of the many strawberry farms on the Sunshine Coast. Your biggest decision will be deciding what to do with all the berries you pick – will you make jam, strawberry ice cream or just eat them? One of our favourite Strawberry Picking farms on the Sunshine Coast is McMartins Strawberry Farm where you can even enjoy a delicious ice-cream when you visit. Our personal recommendation is to check their Facebook pages before you go and if it has been raining, dress the kids in old shoes and bring a plastic bag to bag the shoes to save your car!

Stroll Around The Ginger Factory

Ginger Factory Train Ride

Bring the family and wander around the gorgeous tropical gardens at The Ginger Factory at Yandina. Visitors can also take a guided tour of the factory, sample treats, enjoy a train ride, do a spot of shopping, see a live bee show to learn more about bees or enjoy a play in the playground.

Embark on a Noosa River Cruise

Man and child holding hands, wading in Noosa River.

Watch the winter sun glisten on the water as you cruise down the peaceful Noosa River aboard the Noosa Ferry. With several stops between Tewantin and Hastings Street, with commentary to match, it is a beautiful way to explore Noosa. To see a stunning winter sunset, join the sunset cruise, which will have you admiring waterfront homes as you cruise around Noosa Sound and Weyba Creek.

Check out the Animals at Wildlife HQ

Wildlife HQ night zoo kids patting a lizard

If you haven’t already been to Wildlife HQ, a visit this Winter should be high on your list. Adorable animals such as quokkas, spider monkeys, lemurs, meerkats and more call the zoo home and await your visit.  Whether you are taking pictures, listening to keeper talks, having an extra special animal experience or just wandering around admiring the grounds, Wildlife HQ is a fun, family-friendly place to visit. While there, don’t forget to snap a pic of The Big Pineapple next door.

Wildlife HQ sometimes do a night zoo over the school holidays which we attended and loved as it offered a completely different experience with all the nocturnal wildlife going about their business.

Climb Aboard the Mary Valley Rattler

Experience a historic steam train journey through the Mary Valley to Amamoor and back when you board the Mary Valley Rattler. Departing from the historic Gympie station, the three-hour train journey ambles through the countryside before turning around on the fascinating turntable. Your friendly dog or cat can even travel with you in the designated pet carriage.

Wander in the Rainforest at Mary Cairncross Park

rainforest walk sunshine coast, mary cairncross scenic reserve

Nature and education are perfectly entwined at Mary Cairncross Park. Visitors can check out the informative visitor centre before setting off on one of the walking circuits through the subtropical rainforest. Keep your eyes open as you look for the resident pademelons, abundant birdlife or perhaps even a snake! If all the exploring makes you hungry stop in and enjoy a snack at the onsite café – the view is amazing.

Our kids always appreciate the free playground which is onsite next to the carpark. Its a good place to let them expend some energy before the car ride home.

Spot a Platypus in Obi Obi Creek

platypus facts for kids, platypus in creek

If you haven’t seen a platypus before, try your luck at spotting on of these elusive creatures while wandering along the Maleny Boardwalk: Platypus Walk. Obi Obi Creek is said to be home to several platypus who are easier to spot in the early morning or late afternoon – you will need to be quiet though. If you don’t happen to spot a platypus at least you have undertaken some exercise in a beautiful, natural environment.

Picnic in the Sunshine

Winter on the Sunshine Coast is the ideal time to pack a picnic and find a picturesque spot to relax. Whether by the beach at Mooloolaba, Caloundra, Maroochydore or Noosa or surrounded by trees in the Hinterland, a gorgeous picnic spot is just waiting for you and your picnic blanket.

Have Fun at Amaze World

Visit Maleny Botanic Gardens and Bird World

Bird World at the Maleny Botanic Gardens is very interactive! A unique and memorable experience!

Talk to the birds and relax in the picturesque surroundings at Maleny Botanic Gardens and Bird World. Spread across 18 acres, the gardens and bird world are a popular attraction on the Sunshine Coast. Visitors can wander through four, large interactive aviaries or explore all the gardens have to offer. From a treehouse to a fairy garden, secret gardens and more, spending a whole winter’s day on the grounds at Maleny Botanic Gardens and Bird World is easy.

You know how much we love wildlife at Brisbane Kids and you will be pleased to know that their birds are all rescues, including the impressive parrots that call the sanctuary home. We have visited Bird World many times and having a parrot sit upon your shoulder never gets old.

This is one of the highest average daily sunshine readings in the world! Whether your trip is full of sun or soggy with rain, the Sunshine Coast can provide the perfect getaway in winter with your Brisbane Kids. Here are some ideas of things to do on the Sunshine Coast when it gets cold.

Outdoor things to do on the Sunshine Coast when it gets cold

Bellingham Maze centre

Especially when the weather gets a little cooler, getting the kids outside and soaking up some of that gorgeous Sunshine Coast vitamin D will not only keep them active but happy too.  Below are some great activities you can enjoy outdoors with your kids on the Sunshine Coast.

Challenge yourselves to a maze

With entertainment ranging from mazes and puzzles to mini golf, a playground, waterplay and more, Amaze World is a place where the whole family can spend the whole day – all in a tranquil tropical rainforest setting.

Visit A Sunshine Coast Theme Park

Plan a day trip to one of our recommended Best Theme Parks on the Sunshine Coast. From ride-oriented theme parks like Aussie World, to more relaxed destinations suitable for the entire family like Bellingham Maze, we have covered the perfect theme parks for your Brisbane Kids.

Discover Sunshine Coast’s playgrounds

Visit an awesome Sunshine Coast park or playground. We recommend Russell Family Park in Montville and Pioneer Park in Landsborough but we have a list of amazing Sunshine Coast Playgrounds.

Sunshine Coast parks are packed with awesome equipment that we don’t always see in our Brisbane parks and playgrounds, so they’re great to explore, and discover new challenges. For example, the pirate playground at Happy Valley is fantastic for families with many different types of play equipment, the beach nearby, BBQs, toilets, cafes and a coffee van.

Swim and play at a Sunshine Coast beach

Sunshine Coast beaches aren’t only to be enjoyed in the warmer weather! Rug up, pack a picnic, a kite and some sand play toys like buckets and spades and your Brisbane Kids can have a winter beach adventure. Don’t forget the camera – winter sunshine makes for some beautiful beach photos! You will also often find kite surfers challenging the surf on windy days which is always entertaining for the kids.

Go camping

There is no better time to go camping outdoors than when the weather cools down a little. Without the sticky heat of the summer sun, chilly weather means toasting marshmallows over open fires, snuggling up in sleeping bags under starry skies and discovering a range of beautiful natural camp grounds in the area. We have details of some of the best nature-soaked areas in our list of day trip destinations on the Sunshine Coast.

Visit a Sunshine Coast national park

Active Brisbane families should take advantage of cooler weather and plan a day trip to one of the many national parks, mountains and forests of the Sunshine Coast and hinterland areas. Hiking mountain trails and discovering walking tracks can get quite tiring when the weather is too warm – so a cooler day actually makes a family bush walk so much more enjoyable for all.

One of our favourites places to visit with our family on the Sunshine Coast is Noosa National Park at Noosa Heads, an oasis right in the heart of Noosa. With areas of pine rainforest, woodlands and wallum heaths, the park is home to wildlife galore; including koalas, frill-necked lizards and black cockatoos.

Head to the Zoo

Australia Zoo is one of the most iconic zoos in our country and it is found right in the heart of the Sunshine Coast. Spanning over 100 acres of tropical parkland and housing more than one thousand native and exotic animals, Australia Zoo is an awesome place to visit with your Brisbane kids.

If you are looking for a smaller zoo that gifts you all of the animals you will want to see alongside one of our more famous landmarks, a visit to Wildlife HQ and the Big Pineapple is also a lovely way to spend a cooler day with the kids.

Explore Montville and Maleny

Montville and Maleny, the small and extremely picturesque Sunshine Coast towns, are set high in the mountains and actually at their best in the cooler months. Littered with tiny wood cabins with in-built fireplaces, warm pubs and an array of art and craft shops that line their main street, these country towns are a delight for families all year round.  Tour a local dairy farm, visit the local falls and try to spot an elusive platypus while in the area too!

Visit the Ginger Factory

Located in Yandina, the Ginger Factory is a fun and educational experience for Brisbane Kids. Not only can you visit the factory and discover all about the ginger-making process, you can also take a tour of the gardens, book in to enter the Super Bee Attraction and learn about the fascinating lives of honeybees, enjoy a boat ride, or explore the ZOG Trail and kids playground. Read our full review of the Ginger Factory here.

Sunshine Coast inside pursuits to entertain your Brisbane Kids

sealife sunshine coast

If it’s raining or just too cold to go outside, try these ideas for beating kids’ winter boredom.

Visit SEA LIFE in Mooloolaba

The perfect way to get up-close to the Sunshine Coast’s stunning marine life without entering the water yourself is with a visit to SEA LIFE in Mooloolaba. The kids will love discovering all the weird and wonderful creatures in this fun and interactive underwater experience.

Explore different habitats, from the sweltering tropics to tidal rock pools all from the comfort of the indoor, underwater aquarium.  You can read our full review of SEA LIFE here.

Enjoy a game of putt putt – and more!

Holey Moley is located on the top floor of the Maroochydore Shopping Centre and offers so much more than just your usual indoor putt putt course. With escape rooms, bowling, arcade games, and even kareoke all under one roof, this is the ultimate family fun day escape on a winter’s day.

See a show or join a workshop

Not just a wonderland of natural beauty, the Sunshine Coast also hosts a fantastic variety of indoor shows and events for families. From live stage performances, music, kids shows and holiday programs, be sure to  check out the Sunshine Coast venues and events page for current events.

Plan a day at a local play centre

Play centres are always a popular choice for entertaining kids on rainy days. With its growing population, the Sunshine Coast has play centres everywhere. Keep the kids entertained for hours while they burn off that pent-up energy when it’s simply too cold to go outside. Check out a play centre near you for some warm and safe fun.

Visit Sunshine Castle

Step back in time at Sunshine Castle in Bli Bli. Truly enchanting and educational all at once, this Norman-style replica will have little princes and princesses spellbound. With a dungeon, treasure hunts and quests that lead to the discovery of a King’s Treasure Chest – this family-focussed attraction is perfect for cooler days.

Settle in to a Sunshine Coast Library

With the Sunshine Coast Council library’s events calendar, you will find a free, fun, fitting indoor activity for your Brisbane Kid. From regular Baby Rhyme Time sessions to interactive musical shows, the council puts on some significant events for families and kids of all ages, particularly during the school holidays. Ensure you plan, though, as many of these activities require bookings.

Try Indoor Bouldering

If you have active kids that are keen to burn off some energy away from the wintery weather, Bould Move on the Sunshine Coast would be the perfect place to take them. Basically indoor rock climbing but without the ropes, its not as scary as it sounds and with designated kids walls for them to problem-solve and navigate on, they will gain more than just a bit of indoor entertainment from a trip here.

See a movie

A go-to family fun activity that will entertain the whole tribe is a trip to the local cinemas to see the latest blockbuster film. What better way to beat the chilly weather than with a hot bucket of salted popcorn, your family settled comfortably in beside you, and the latest film playing out before you all for a couple of hours.
