Although a hotspot of fun and entertainment in itself, sometimes it is exciting to hit the road and check out some of the nearby attractions that you wouldn’t usually get to. From hidden rock pools to mountain ranges, natural wonders and spectacular scenic drives, below are some of our favourite day trip ideas from the Gold Coast.

Springbrook National Park

Purling Brook Falls from below

Although the Gold Coast’s glittering coastal beaches are one of the main attractions, a day trip to nearby Springbrook National Park in the Gold Coast Hinterland will have you thinking you were in another world. Covering an area of 6725 hectares, the park is set on a high plateau and is covered with subtropical and temperate rainforest, open eucalypt forest, and montane health.

A day trip here can be filled with discovering the many shimmering waterfalls, diverse flora and wide range of beautiful and rare wildlife. By far, the main attraction for anyone visiting the national park is the Springbrook Natural Bridge, a stunning natural arched cave with a waterfall cascading through a hole in the top. If you are still there as the sun goes down, you might even see some of the glow worms that live there light up at night.

Tamborine Mountain

Tamborine Mountain Hang Gliders Lookout.

It may only be a short 45 minute drive north-west of the Gold Coast, but there is so much to see and do at Tamborine Mountain that you may want to plan an early start. The mountain is filled with rainforest walks and tracks, alive with bird song and the scatterings of the diverse range of wildlife that call this haven home.

There are rock pools to swim in, wide-open picnic grounds to spread out on, lookouts and vistas to discover, and even a glow worm cave to immerse yourself in. The main street is also well worth finishing your day on, as it overflows with cafes and small stores selling handmade craft shops, art, vintage finds, and sweet delights to take home as a memory.

Mount Barney National Park

Picture of Mt Barney in the Scenic Rim

Nestled in the scenic rim and less than two hours’ drive west of the Gold Coast centre is the magnificent Mt Barney. It is part of the Gondwana Rainforests of Australia World Heritage Area; the mountain is full of towering peaks, picturesque creeks and waterholes, beautiful waterfalls and adventurous tracks and trails. Popular with families who love to get outdoors and get active, Mount Barney Creek is probably the best place to start your day trip to the area. Spring-fed all year round, the creek is the perfect spot to swim, kayak, or canoe, and if you are very patient and determined, you may even spot a local platypus feeding.

Mountview Alpaca Farm

herd of alpacas

Oh, there is something truly magical about an alpaca. Cheerful, playful and with eyelashes to die for, these gentle creatures make everything seem so much better when you are in their presence. If you are looking for your alpaca fix and keen for a day trip to find them, then a visit to the Mountview Alpaca Farm is definitely what you need.

Situated just outside the picturesque country town on Canungra in the Scenic Rim region, once staff have helped you find an alpaca that’s personality suits your family, you can walk them, feed them and just love them as much as possible for the day! (This is a nice stop over if you are headed up to Mt O’Reillys).

Toowoomba

Toowoomba Carnival of Flowers walking under floral arbour.

Just over 2 hours drive west of the Gold Coast lies the quaint country town of Toowoomba. The perfect day trip destination for families looking to wind down and take in some laid-back atmosphere, it is one of the best places to spend quality time with your family. Affectionately known as the ‘Garden City, ‘ it comes alive in September each year for the ‘Carnival of the Flowers.’ If you are visiting outside of this month you are still spoilt for choice with things to do, with museums, gardens, and parks a plenty.

If you have any train-lovers in the family this may also be the perfect destination, with the heritage-listed Spring Bluff Railway Station, railway museums and live steamers all found here too.

Byron Bay

You would be hard-pressed to find anyone who hasn’t heard of the famed Byron Bay. Only a short one-hour drive south from the Gold Coast, this coastal town has taken the laidback vibe to a new level. Filled with trendy eateries, surf-loving locals and its infamous lighthouse, a day trip here is a bucket list type experience, but can get  very busy over school holidays.

Enjoy wandering the many handmade craft, art, and clothing stores, lazing by the beach, and enjoying the mouth-watering range of healthy food options on offer. Take a walk up to the lighthouse for breathtaking views (and to spot some whales), and try to find time to visit The Pass, Byron Bay’s most popular surf beach.

Stanthorpe and the Granite Belt

snowball fight at snowflakes in stanthorpe.stanthorpe

If you live on the Gold Coast and are chasing a snow-filled fix, then a day trip to Stanthorpe and the Granite Belt in the chilly month of July may just gift you this. Known to be one of the closest spots to experience this, if the weather isn’t being kind, there is always their annual Snowflakes in Stanthorpe festival to help you celebrate the cool climate.

If it’s not the cold you are chasing, there are plenty of other reasons to visit the region, with farms, vineyards, mazes, national parks, a famous Christmas shop and even a castle to discover!

Lamington National Park

MAGE CREDIT: Destination Gold Coast

Home to more bird, frog, snake and marsupial species than anywhere else in Australia, the wildlife spotting opportunities at Lamington National Park make a day trip visit here a must-do! Covering over 20,000 hectares of rainforest, the national park is home to over 200 cascading waterfalls, 160km of walking trails, crystal clear creeks, and too many breathtaking views to count.

Pack a picnic to enjoy in the tranquil surrounds or visit the Mountain Cafe and Gift Shop for a drink, some sweets and some treats before you leave.

Tropical Fruit World

Located in the Tweed region, a day trip to Tropical Fruit World will give you so much more than just a few hour admiring exotic fruit. There is the macadamia plantation safari tractor train to ride, animals to feed at the Fauna Park exhibit, ducks and birds to admire on the Wildlife Boat Cruise, mini golf and playgrounds to enjoy on ‘The Island’, and, of course, some incredible tropical fruit to taste!

You can BYO snacks and picnic if you like, or visit the Plantation Pavillion café and gift shop to find some new treats to buy.

Stradbroke Island

Gorge Walk wooden pathway with ocean view on North Stradbroke Island, Queensland, Australia

If you are keen to explore some new surf beaches in a truly magical location, visiting the closest island to the Gold Coast is a fantastic day trip idea for you. It may not be the quickest spot to get to – taking approximately 2.5 hours driving and on ferry to reach North Stradbroke Island, but the day you will then fill while there will be memorable and worth it.

There are incredible surf beaches to discover, but the island is also home to some other pretty spectacular attractions. Lookouts, lakes, fishing, wildlife spotting, walks, and watersports are just some of the fun ways you can create a fun day here with your kids. You can leave your car in Cleveland and use their regular bus service to see the island.

Brisbane

Southbank Brisbane

It would be remiss of us not to mention one of the most fabulous day trips you can do from the Gold Coast, and that would involve a visit to our very own Brisbane! Whether it is nature-filled parklands, adventurous mountain hikes, bridge climbs, family-friendly eateries, museums, galleries, heritage-listed buildings, or river riding that interests you the most, our wonderful city has it all.

Kingscliff and Cabarita

Kingscliff and Cabarita are two of the most beautiful seaside villages in Australia. They are only a 40km round trip from Coolangatta, making them ideal day trips if you want to escape and unwind.

We have done the research and have put together a list of what we believe are some of the finest buffet breakfast experiences. Based on a number of features—including the variety of food, atmosphere, unique inclusions, family-friendly facilities, and value for money—these buffet breakfast Gold Coast venues will keep you going back for more, and more, and more!

Citrique, Surfers Paradise

If you are looking for a buffet breakfast on the Gold Coast that caters magnificently for everyone’s palettes, is set in elegant surrounds, and has been awarded an Australian Good Food Guide Chef Hat for two consecutive years (2023 and 2024), then you don’t need to look any further than Citrique. The variety here is incredible, with all the usual hot and cold buffet favourites you would expect, but also some pleasant extras you didn’t realise you needed until you were presented with them. With both Asian and Western-style breakfasts on the buffet, as well as an egg station, pancakes, and more, it’s the fact that they also cater for those with gluten-free requirements that makes us love this buffet – hands-down.

Cost: Adults- $49.50 |  Children (5-12 years) – $30.00
Breakfast Hours: 6:30am – 10:30am daily
Address: 158 Ferny Ave, Surfers Paradise

Bazaar Restaurant, Surfers Paradise

The Bazaar buffet breakfast option at QT on the Gold Coast really has to be seen to be believed. Not only is the decor warm and inviting (like their line of chefs just waiting to answer any questions or produce your own unique desires), but the range of traditional and international offerings here are simply inspiring. Whether you’re after delicate French-style pain au chocolat, bagels, pastries, or donuts, Asian-inspired congee, miso soup, dim sums, or steamed pork buns, os simply a traditonal hot fry up or cold continental selection, you won’t know where to start! Add to that the stations for omelettes, Scandinavian-style cold meats, and waffles, and you will need to wear your extra-stretchy pants to make sure you have room to fit it all in! Bazaar Restaurant’s buffet breakfast is an absolute winner for variety, quality, and service, in our eyes.

Cost: Adults- $49.00 |  Children (5-12 years) – $19.00
Breakfast Hours: 6:30am – 10:30am daily

Buffet breakfast Gold Coast SkyPoint Bistro and bar.

A buffet breakfast on the Gold Coast that gets some serious points just for its insane location and views has to be the one hosted by the SkyPoint Bistro and Bar. While tickets to the buffet are bought on the ground floor, all of the action takes place 77 floors above the ground in the rooftop restaurant, which boasts 360 degree views of the Gold Coast landscape below and beyond. That’s right, you can enjoy your breakfast spread 230m above sea level, your head in the clouds, and your tastebuds in heaven, as you delight in all the joys a buffet breakfast should include. The icing on the delectable pastry? Your buffet ticket also includes entry to the SkyPoint Observation Deck too!

Cost: Adults- $44.00 |  Children (aged 3 – 13) – $30.00
Breakfast Hours: 7:30am – 10:30am daily
Address: 3003 Surfers Paradise Blvd, Surfers Paradise

Waves Restaurant, Surfers Paradise

Waves Restaurant in Surfers Paradise bills itself as being the venue for ‘people who love buffets’ and it appears locals agree with this assessment whole-heartedly too. With a beautiful setting and an abundance of buffet breakfast food options available, we love that the whole family can happily be catered for here. All of the favourites are there, so you will leave satisfied; regardless if it is a fry up, continental selection, bakery goods, pancakes, or tropical fruit style brekkie you are craving. A talented chef is even on hand to cook your eggs any way you like them (which is like heaven to a parent who has family members who all prefer a different type!).

Cost: Adults- $39.00 |  Children (5-12 years) – $19.50
Breakfast Hours: 6:30am – 10am daily
Address: 3032 Surfers Paradise Blvd, Surfers Paradise

The Star Gold Coast, Broadbeach

For a buffet breakfast on the Gold Coast experienced with true grandeur, the Harvest Buffet at The Star might be just what you are looking for. You won’t be disappointed here, with a dedicated omelette station with a selection of fillings, eggs made to order, pancakes, waffles, seasoned fruits, Asian dishes, baked goods, and all the fry-up options you could want as well. The restaurant is happy to cater to allergies and they have an actual coffee cafe for those who like their blend a particular way. In fact, all of the buffet options here (lunch and dinner included) are well worth checking out. We particularly love their floor-to-ceiling glass walls that overlook the pool, the height-appropriate children’s buffet, as well as a very tempting dessert station with its mesmerising 2-metre chocolate fountain!

Cost: Adults- $39.90 |  Children (5-12 years) – $19.90
Breakfast Hours: 6:30am – 10am daily

Terraces Restaurant, Main Beach

Housed inside the opulent Sheraton Grand Mirage Resort Gold Coast, Terraces Restaurant happily delivers on its guest expectations of quality when it comes to its buffet breakfast spread. With views overlooking their stunning resort pool, their buffet includes endless coffee and tea, as well as gluten free and vegetarian options. If your kids aren’t likely to make an effective dint in the buffet, the restaurant also has a ‘Kids Corner’ menu, with plenty of filling and delicious options for the kids at a cheaper cost. We love this buffet location, as, when you are completely full, you can roll out for a quick dip in the pool, or, just beyond it, can access the beach from a back gate at the hotel.

Cost: Adults- $48.00 |  Children (aged 4 – 12) – $24.00
Breakfast Hours: 6.00am – 11:00am daily
Address: 71 Seaworld Dr, Main Beach

Shoreline Restaurant, Main Beach

Not only is this resort situated right next to one of the best theme parks on the Gold Coast, and is located right across the road from the beach, but the buffet breakfast at the Shoreline Restaurant at Sea World Resort is also one of the best-value, quality buffets in the area. At only $32 for adults and a very reasonable $15 for kids (aged up to 13 years too!), we love this place for its value for money for families. Although their price is so low, their quality and quantity of food is not – with an egg station, all the hot and cold food options a buffet breakfast should have, pancakes, waffles, bakery goods, and continental options too. You can also purchase a barista made coffee, thickshake, or freshly squeezed juice if you want something more tailored than the juice and coffee station included in the buffet.

Cost: Adults- $32.00 |  Children (4-13 years) – $15.00
Breakfast Hours: 6:30am – 10am daily
Address: Sea World Dr, Main Beach

Kalinda Restaurant, Benowa

Although not in a super fancy restaurant with international buffet options on the offer, we have listed the buffet breakfast at Kalinda for a couple of reasons. One is because it will give you all that you need in a buffet breakfast for a very reasonable price compared to other buffets hosted on the Gold Coast. Two, because it is in the lovely RACV resort that features a beautiful setting and glorious poolside view. But, one of the things we think families – ok kids – will love the most? The buffet comes with its own ice-cream station! It may not be what most parents imagine when heading somewhere to feed the kids first up in the morning, but it’s almost definitely a dream come true for any child! For the adults, there are made-to-order eggs, waffles, daily specials, and barista made coffee too.

Cost: Adults- $39.00 |  Children (5-12 years) – $15.00
Breakfast Hours: 6:30am – 10:00am (10:30am weekends)
Address: RACV Royal Pines Resort, Level 2, Ross Street, Benowa

Cove Café, Sanctuary Cove

The recently reimagined Cove Cafe at the Intercontinental Hotel Sanctuary Cove has a delightfully fresh and airy, tropic-inspired aesthetic reflecting the natural beauty of Sanctuary Cove. If you are staying at the hotel, the breakfast will be included, but if you are heading to Sanctuary Cove to take in all this small marina has to offer, it is worth heading out early to enjoy the buffet spread on offer here. Relatively reasonable in cost, there is an omelette station with eggs cooked your way, fresh juices, seasonal fruit, international dishes, delicate pastries, and Vittoria Coffee. You can choose to sit indoors or outdoors.

If you’re thinking of heading to the Gold Coast, here are some of the best experiences to try and places to visit while you’re there!

Gold Coast Beaches

You can’t go past the beautiful beaches for our top pick of things to do on the Gold Coast with kids.

Main Beach, Surfers Paradise

The most popular of all the beaches and, in fact, the busiest beach in Australia is Main Beach at Surfers’ Paradise. This is great for being close to restaurants, entertainment and a huge range of accommodation, so you can stroll the shops and have a great lunch in between dips at the patrolled beach located only metres away. Check out our guide to Things to do in Surfers Paradise for Families for some more ideas about spending your time in this top spot.

Broadbeach

Flanked by fancy high rise accommodation, Broadbeach is a little less hectic that Surfers Paradise, but still features a great range of restaurants and shops if you want to take a break from the waves. Several great parks are located adjacent to the shoreline throughout Broadbeach, including Pratten Park and Kurrawa All Abilities Playground.

Mermaid Beach, Nobby’s Beach & Miami Beach

Just south of Broadbeach, Mermaid Beach, Nobby’s Beach and Miami Beach are perfect for families wanting a beach escape without the distractions (though Pacific Fair, a huge shopping complex with designer and department stores, dining, cinemas and more is located closeby). These are quieter beaches in more residential areas. Mermaid Beach is also home to Turtle Beach Resort, a fantastic accommodation option with a waterpark and more. If you are in Miami, you’ll also want to check out the Miami Marketta – a night market that is open to the public every Wednesday, Friday and Saturday evening.

Burleigh Heads

Burleigh Heads is a little further south and very picturesque. From the surrounding patrolled beaches to the coastal walk through Burleigh Head National Park, it is very popular for families with kids of all ages. Finish the day up with some fish and chips overlooking the headland and see if the kids can spot any migrating humpback whales.

Tallebudgera Creek & Currumbin Creek

The estuaries of Tallebudgera Creek and Currumbin Creek provide the best of both worlds, with the sandy shores and calm waters of the creeks perfect for families with littles or those not wanting to battle the waves. They’re also just around the headland from some amazing surf beaches.

Coolangatta

The beautiful Coolangatta, just north of the New South Wales border, is famous for its surf beaches—Greenmount, Kirra and Snapper Rocks. The oceanfront walk around Greenmount Point provides some great outlooks, while a walk up to Kirra Hill Lookout offers panoramic views of the coastline.

Kids will love playing in the crystal clear waters of the ocean off the Gold Coast. Aside from swimming and playing on a bodyboard, how about learning to surf at one of the Gold Coast’s amazing surf schools? It’s a just one of the wonderful things to do on the Gold Coast with kids and you can find a full list here.

Gold Coast Playgrounds

A large pirate ship in the playground at Palm Beach Parklands on the Gold Coast

Palm Beach Parklands

Outdoor Playgrounds

All kids love playgrounds, and the Gold Coast has its fair share of awesome parks for kids! One of our absolute favourites is Broadwater Parklands in Southport, which has all the usual park equipment, as well as a zipline, pedal monorail, awesome water play AND an inflatable water park in summer! We also love Palm Beach Parklands with its cool nautical theme and Ronnie Long Park in Tallebudgera located right in front of Tallebudgera Beach Surf Club.

You can find out all about Gold Coast Playgrounds here.

Indoor Playgrounds

Sometimes it rains on the Gold Coast, and holiday plans might feel in disarray. Fear not, though – the Gold Coast has an amazing amount of play centres! We have collected them all in one handy list, descriptions, and links to their websites in our resource for Indoor Playgrounds on the Gold Coast

Theme Parks

The theme parks of the Gold Coast are a massive drawcard for visitors and locals. Check out our info about how to save money at Gold Coast theme parks

Dreamworld & WhiteWater World

For almost 40 years, Dreamworld at Coomera on the Gold Coast has been a popular theme park for families, with people travelling from all over the country to visit. There’s something for all ages – shows to watch, rides suitable for toddlers through to teenagers, animals to meet and a variety of eateries spread over 85 hectares. Read our full Dreamworld review here along with how to get cheap Dreamworld tickets.

Adjacent to Dreamworld is WhiteWater World, a large waterpark that is included in the price of a ticket to Dreamworld. Alternatively, you can purchase access to visit WhiteWater World on its own, and you can read our detailed review of the waterpark here.

Warner Bros. Movie World

The place to enjoy incredible thrill rides and meet your favourite superheroes, Movie World has something for visitors of all ages. There’s even a world-first Wizard of Oz precinct coming in 2024! We think Movie World is also a great theme park for toddlers. Check out why in our review here.

Sea World

Sea World is a favourite Gold Coast theme park filled with marine life wonders! Rides such as the Jet Rescue Coaster and Storm Coaster are soon to be joined by the family-oriented Leviathan (a family wooden track rollercoaster) and Trident, as well as the Vortex thrill ride in the new The New Atlantis section of the park. The family-friendly Nickelodeon Land features rides and amusements for younger children and the opportunity to meet Nickelodeon cartoon favourites such as Sponge Bob, Dora the Explorer, TMNT and Paw Patrol characters.

The animals at Sea World include dolphins, seals and sharks, as well as the main attractions being the polar bears. Sea World can also organise cruises, helicopter rides and whale watching experiences.

Wet’n’Wild

One of our favourite waterparks close to Brisbane, Wet’n’Wild caters to children and adults of all ages who will be entertained with a variety of waterslides, adventure rides, whirlpools, a wave pool and Dive ‘n’ Movies at special times throughout the year. Wet’n’Wild can also be great for younger children, with their unique Wet’N’Wild Junior section designed just for kids under 10 years of age.

You can find a complete guide to Queensland theme parks here, and before you go, be sure to check out our discount ticket offers and deals!

Animal Encounters

There are some great places to visit for encounters with beautiful animals on the Gold Coast.

Whale Watching

From June to November, you can enjoy getting up close to some fantastic marine life with a whale-watching trip on the Gold Coast. Here are more details about whale watching on the Gold Coast. If you prefer to whale watch from the land, you can also get a wonderful vantage point from Burleigh Head National Park

Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary

One of the best up-close animal experiences on the Gold Coast is Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary, with its huge variety of animals and many great shows and animal feeding exhibitions to keep kids entertained.

Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary has been a longstanding attraction for families, known initially for daily wild-lorikeet feeding by local beekeeper and flower-grower, Dr Alex Griffiths. More than seventy years on, the birds are still stars, but there’s now so much on offer that you’ll need at least one full day to experience all the play areas, shows, cafes, and amazing animals spread over 27 hectares of bushland and lush rainforest. They also have a high ropes course built into the park traversing the sanctuary.

Handy tip: You dont need to pay entry to the park to feed the rainbow lorikeets. For a gold coin donation you can participate in the lorikeet feeding twice daily at 8am and 4pm.

David Fleay Wildlife Park

Another great place for animal encounters is the David Fleay Wildlife Park. This is a quieter venue, where the animals are kept in conditions as close to natural as possible, but there are still so many animals to see here and lots of great shows.

Established by Dr David Fleay in the 1950s, the wildlife park is a tranquil habitat for many wildlife, all endemic to Queensland. Many animals, birds and reptiles that call the park home have been rehabilitated after being injured or diseased. If they cannot be released back into the wild, they are lucky enough to live out their days in the 18 acres of eucalypt forest, rainforest, and mangroves.

The park offers daily shows and talks with rangers, picnic facilities, bushwalks, and an onsite cafe, making it a great morning or afternoon for families.

Gold Coast Butterfly House

Kids will love visiting the Gold Coast Butterfly House. While this is essentially a hobby farm, it’s open to the public on weekends. There’s a life cycle room packed with information on butterflies and the lovely walk-in butterfly house with its beautiful plants, flowers, and, of course, many butterflies!

Unusual Things to Do on the Gold Coast with Kids

Boardwalk and artwork inside Jellurgal Aboriginal Cultural Centre

Jellurgal Aboriginal Cultural Centre

The Gold Coast is also home to some more unusual attractions that kids will love.

iFly Surfers Paradise

The whole family can try indoor skydiving at iFly at Surfers Paradise, a safe action sport for kids. Children aged three years and up can learn flying skills in a fully–controlled and safe environment and can even do it regularly as a weekend sport.

Tropical Fruit World

Another quirky attraction of the Gold Coast is Tropical Fruit World. This is a working fruit farm growing a massive variety of exotic fruits. You can visit the plantations via tractor train, feed the animals, enjoy a boat cruise, and do fruit tasting!

Jellurgal Aboriginal Cultural Centre, Gold Coast

Explore Jellurgal Aboriginal Cultural Centre, where you can take a walkabout tour or enrol your kids in a school holiday Little Explorers program. The cultural centre offers a selection of Aboriginal art and gifts and an educational piece that explains the rich cultural history of the Yumambeh people.

The Gold Coast Hinterland

Rainforest trees in Purling Brook Falls Circuit, Springbrook National Park

If you’re done with beaches, theme parks and the hustle and bustle, head to the hinterland for more things to do on the Gold Coast with kids, where you can truly get away from it all and out into nature. Here are the highlights of the hinterland for you to explore!

Tamborine Mountain

At beautiful Tamborine Mountain, kids will love seeing waterfalls and the spectacular views from lookouts. In the warmer months and after some decent rain, you need to head to Cedar Creek Falls where a short hike will take you and the kids down to play in the rock pools.

Why not try your hand at fossicking by searching for thundereggs at Thunderbird Park, taking the kids on their high ropes course or having fun at their kids excavator park

If you’re thinking of staying for a few days (or more!), Take a look at our guide on spending a family weekend in Mount Tamborine.

Lamington National Park

Lamington National Park is about as wild as it gets. Divided into two main sections of bushwalking trails—Green Mountains (closer to O’Reilly’s) and Binna Burra—there’s a lot of natural beauty to wonder at in this park. Whilst many of the trails are arduous and lengthy, there are some kid-friendly bush walks to be discovered.

Check out our full review of everything you can see and do at Binna Burra here.

Springbrook National Park

Springbrook National Park is another excellent hinterland destination to visit. Take the kids for a play in Apple Tree Park, and walk the Twin Falls Circuit, Purling Brook Falls or Natural Bridge Circuit for bushwalks among stunning scenery; you can even find glow worms!

You can read about what to do when visiting Springbrook National Park here.

The play area at Broadwater Parklands is suited to children of all ages, with toddlers well catered for. The shallow water play area, complete with sprinklers, waterfalls and a splash pool, is popular for little ones to splash about it.

Children learning to navigate wheels will love zipping around the mini-traffic track, or for a more structured ride, can go on the pedal-powered monorail (smaller children may need someone with longer legs to help pedal). This playground is only partially fenced and near a beach and carparks, so always exercise caution with young children.

Features: Partially fenced playground, jumping pillow, water play area, pedal monorail, Liberty swing, slides, climbing equipment, adjacent to the beach, BBQ, picnic tables, café and accessible toilets.

Why it’s one of the Best Toddler Playgrounds on the Gold Coast: During our visits, we found toddlers seemed particularly attracted to the jumping pillow and pedal monorail.

Location: Marine Parade, Southport

Palm Beach Parklands

A large pirate ship in the playground at Palm Beach Parklands on the Gold Coast

This nautical-themed playground near Currumbin Creek will spark your toddler’s imagination as they pretend to be sailors, pirates or other nautical characters. Toy cannons, treasure chests, maps and a rowboat are spread throughout the playground, as is a wobbly suspension bridge, swings, slides and other fun play structures.

Pack the bikes and/or scooters to take advantage of the paths from the playground and beyond. Having a treat at the nearby café or playing and paddling at the creek is another great activity when visiting Palm Beach Parklands.

Why it’s one of the Best Toddler Playgrounds on the Gold Coast: Did you see the pirate ship? Toddlers will spend hours enjoying the themed nature of this playground.

Features: Nautical theme, flying fox, suspension bridge, swings, slides, climbing equipment, pathways, near Currumbin Creek, café, BBQs, change rooms, showers and toilets.

Location: 945 Gold Coast Highway, Palm Beach

Ronnie Long Park

ronnie long park gold coast, Best Toddler Playgrounds on the Gold Coast:

Located next to the Tallebudgera Surf Club, Ronnie Long Park provides a colourful, Surf Lifesaver-themed playground for families to enjoy when visiting the Gold Coast. This partially fenced playground is divided into two areas, with one area particularly wonderful for toddlers. Featuring a smaller climbing frame with a slide, swings, and merry-go-round, toddlers will enjoy using their imagination and energy as they climb, swing and slip on the equipment.

The adjacent green space, toilets, Surf Club and beach invite families to linger longer as they bask in the beauty of this beachside setting.

Why it’s one of the Best Toddler Playgrounds on the Gold Coast: Tallebudgera is, in our opinion one of the most family-friendly spots on the Gold Coast for water play. For visitors to the Gold Coast, this playground is the final HURRAH for your toddler before jumping back in the car for the long ride home.

Features: Partially fenced, swings, slide, climbing equipment, close to beach, plenty of green space, and toilets.

Location: 1505 Gold Coast Hwy, Palm Beach North

Pratten Park

One of the best toddler playgrounds on the Gold Coast, this beachside park has plenty to offer toddlers and their families, including a super cool pedal-powered monorail. While the park is not fenced, the monorail encircles the playground, providing a boundary of sorts, but care should be taken to avoid little ones escaping. Equipment suitable for toddlers includes slides, climbing opportunities, a small flying fox, a merry-go-round and other fun animals and boats to play on.

When you and your toddler tire of fun in the playground, head to the nearby patrolled beach to cool off and build sandcastles. BBQs and picnic tables are located by the park, so bring a snag to throw on the BBQ or have a picnic while enjoying the great outdoors on the Gold Coast.

Why it’s one of the Best Toddler Playgrounds on the Gold Coast: Unlike some of the other bigger playgrounds on the Gold Coast, Pratten Park is smaller and less overwhelming for smaller kids. Despite its size, it still comes equipped with a huge variety of toddler-suited play equipment. Plus its at the beach!

Features: Unfenced playground, partially shaded, small fort, pedal monorail, small flying fox, spring rockers, swings, slides, adjacent to beach, BBQs, picnic tables and accessible toilets.

Location: Old Burleigh Road, Broadbeach

Glow Worms

You will find The Glow Worm Caves Tamborine Mountain behind a boutique winery in picturesque Mount Tamborine. Created to simulate the natural environment of the glow worm as it would exist in the surrounding areas, these caves have been man-made. The caves that exist today are part of a plan to grow the colony to a point of self-sufficiency.

The Glow Worm Caves at Tamborine Mountain can only be visited as part of a paid guided tour. The daytime tour starts off with an information session, which is beneficial so that you know what to look for, before going in to see the glow worms lighting up the walls of the inner caves.

LOCATION: Cedar Creek Estate, cnr Long and Hartley Roads (104 – 144 Hartley Road), North Tamborine

Bookings required. Find all the details on the Glow Worm Caves Tamborine Mountain website

Stargazing

Starry sky at night from under trees

We all know that getting away from the city means more stars to see at night, but it is still not always easy to see the stars with trees and other obstructions.

These are our top places for viewing the night sky in the Gold Coast Hinterland –

  • Hang Gliders Lookout, Tamborine Mountain – A stunning location to watch the sun set and the stars appear, be sure to rug up and even pack a picnic dinner for this unique experience.
  • Binna Burra – Head to the very end of Binna Burra Road and set up on the grass or picnic tables near the Binna Burra Tea House for some high-up star gazing. If staying at Binna Burra, you can even join one of their After Dark walks (cost involved). Read our detailed review of Binna Burra and Lamington National Park

LOCATION #2: Binna Burra, 1040 Binna Burra Road, Beechmont

Cedar Creek Falls & Rock Pools

above photo of Cedar Creek Falls in Mount Tamborine

Swimming in a creek or rockpool is an experience not to be missed. Recommended after some decent rain so that the water is flowing and fresh, we would suggest a visit to Cedar Creek Falls in Autumn when the skies are clear and the sun is shining.

The walk to the rockpools is about 1.4km return, so around 30 minutes (plus swimming time). The path includes stairs and declines/inclines and some rock scrambling involved, so the pools are unfortunately not accessible for prams or wheelchairs. The first lookout for the falls is very accessible though and you will find it about 250m along a flat track.

Tamborine Rainforest Skywalk

Tamborine Rainforest Skywalk wheelchair accessible walk

Suspended high amongst the trees in Mount Tamborine, the Tamborine Rainforest Skywalk leads visitors on a stroll through the rainforest canopy via steel bridges and along a dirt walking track out to a lovely series of Cedar Creek cascades. Close to the end of the trail, a 40m cantilever bridge hovers dramatically some 30m above the creek and rainforest below.

The 1.5km circuit takes about 45 minutes to complete at a leisurely pace and is accessible by bigger-wheeled prams (although there are a few stairs along the way you will need to navigate). The first section of Skywalk is wheelchair accessible.

LOCATION: 333 Geissmann Drive, North Tamborine

Thunderegg fossicking

child sitting in dirt holding small thunderegg with pick in background

A certified mine on the Thunderbird Park site, Minecraft enthusiasts (and the rest of the family) will love fossicking for their very own thundereggs! Created by bubbles in prehistoric volcanic lava that has solidified into rock form, thundereggs can range from the size of a pea to the size of a boulder. These ‘eggs’, when cracked in half, can display a variety of colours and crystal formations that are completely unique in every egg.

After a quick information session about safety and what to look for, you are given a bucket which you can fill to the brim (remember, whatever you find you also need to carry down and out of the mine). Sensible, closed-in shoes are a necessity for this activity, as it is a bit of a hike up to the mine from the mine shed and real tools are provided for you to use. Gloves are also highly recommended (BYO).

Once you have filled your buckets, you can head back down to the gem shop where staff will advise you on which rocks to have cut and in which direction the cut should go. Cutting prices are based on size and are listed at the shop. You can choose to take all your finds home, or leave them at the shop if you are just too tired to carry any more. The gem shop also sells a range of cut rocks and gems.

National Park bushwalks

With three major national parks to explore, the Gold Coast Hinterland is an amazing location to go bushwalking with kids and is totally doable as a day trip!

Lamington National Park is about as wild as it gets. Divided into two main sections of bushwalking trails—Green Mountains (closer to O’Reilly’s) and Binna Burra—there is a lot of natural beauty to wonder at in this park. Whilst a lot of the trails are arduous and lengthy, there are definitely some kid-friendly bush walks to be discovered.

An easy 1 hour’s drive from Brisbane or the Gold Coast, Tamborine National Park offers spectacular views sweeping from the coastline to the Scenic Rim, with lots of other facilities and attractions nearby for families to enjoy. The national park itself is divided into six sections of trails—Cedar Creek, Joalah, MacDonald, Palm Grove, The Knoll and Witches Falls. Of these sections, Cedar Creek, Joalah and MacDonald are most suited to families.

Located around 100km south of Brisbane, Springbrook National Park is part of the Gondwana Rainforests of Australia World Heritage Area. This national park is full of lush sections of rainforest, including centuries-old towering trees and palms, leafy green ferns and plenty of birds and wildlife for you to spot. Access to the walking trails in Springbrook National Park is via three sections—Springbrook Plateau, the Natural Bridge section and the Mount Cougal section.

DigIT Excavator Park

Australia’s FIRST excavator park, Dig IT at Thunderbird Park has recently opened, making dreams come true for Brisbane Kids. Located within Thunderbird Park, Dig IT has four zones filled with action for all ages:

  • The Excavation Zone, where the kids commandeer a digger to dig a hole as deep as they want. They fill the bucket with dirt and mud, spin the cab around, and then shake the dirt into a huge pile.
  • The Demolition Zone, where kids can knock over a tower of timber blocks, test their skills, and try to stack old tires. It’s trickier than it looks, but still, a challenge the kids enjoyed.
  • The Croc Zone, where kids can try fishing with their diggers. Using a hook on the end of their boom, kids have to use finesse to hook a croc and hoist it in the air.
  • The RC Zone, which has numerous scaled and realistic radio control vehicles to drive in the gravel pit.

Kids under five years of age need an adult to accompany them on the digger, but those five and over can go solo if they wish.

Kid friendly bush walks in Lamington National Park

Shelter with sign depicting Lamington National Park entrance

Lamington National Park is about as wild as it gets. Divided into two main sections of bushwalking trails—Green Mountains (closer to O’Reilly’s) and Binna Burra—there’s a lot of natural beauty to wonder at in this park. Whilst a lot of the trails are arduous and lengthy, there are definitely some kid friendly bush walks on the Gold Coast in Lamington National Park to be discovered.

NOTE: Swimming in any rockpools or creeks in Lamington National Park is prohibited due to the sensitive ecosystems these waterways support.

Centenary Track (Green Mountains)

  • LENGTH: 1.8km return (around 30 minutes walking time)
  • DIFFICULTY: Grade 1 (Easy walk or roll | Sealed track)
  • ACCESSIBILITY: Wheelchair and pram accessible

Winding through a forest filled with incredible birdlife, this historically significant trail is a great introduction to Gold Coast bushwalking for families. Stop and watch for Rufous Fantails, Bowerbirds, Albert’s Lyrebirds and Easter Yellow Robins from the many bench seats dotted along the trail.

Rainforest Circuit (Binna Burra)

  • LENGTH: 1.2km return (around 30 minutes walking time)
  • DIFFICULTY: Grade 2 (Easy walk for most families | Flat, unsealed tracks)
  • ACCESSIBILITY: Not accessible for prams or wheelchairs

This relatively flat walk provides lots of unique wildlife spotting opportunities, with birds galore (see if you can spot the blue treasures hidden in a Bowerbird nest, or listen out for the feline call of a Catbird), plenty of lizards and other reptiles, Pademelons and more.

Rainforest Return (Green Mountains)

  • LENGTH: 1.4km return (around 30 minutes walking time)
  • DIFFICULTY: Grade 2 (Easy walk for most families | Flat, unsealed tracks)
  • ACCESSIBILITY: Not accessible for prams or wheelchairs

Another fantastic trail for birdwatching, the Rainforest Return passes through 23 million-year-old boulders. It’s hard not to get caught up in the wonder of just how old some of the trees and other features of this Gondwana rainforest really are.

  • LENGTH: 5km return (around 1 hour 30 minutes walking time)
  • DIFFICULTY: Grade 3 (Moderate walk for most families | Some inclines and uneven track)
  • ACCESSIBILITY: Not accessible for prams or wheelchairs

Taking you into some of the most accessible and untouched cool temperate rainforest in Lamington National Park, the landscape of this trail transitions from strangler figs, vines, ferns and mosses of the subtropical rainforest to Antarctic beech forest—one of our remaining links with the ancient forests of Gondwana.

Caves Circuit (Binna Burra)

  • LENGTH: 5km return (around 1 hour 30 minutes walking time)
  • DIFFICULTY: Grade 4 (Moderate walk for most families | Some inclines and stairs | Possibility of rockfalls and unstable surfaces)

It is recommended you walk this trail in an anti-clockwise direction and return via the same track.

After visiting all the Gold Coast playgrounds in person, these are the playgrounds that our kids enjoyed the most!

Introduction to the Gold Coast’s Playground Scene

The Gold Coast in Queensland Australia is known for its beautiful beaches, vibrant atmosphere, and family-friendly attractions. With warm weather almost all year round, it is any wonder that it is also home to some of the best playgrounds for kids of all ages in South East Queensland. In Australia, public playgrounds are free for community use and are maintained by local councils. If you are wanting to locate some of the lesser well-known Gold Coast parks and playgrounds you can check out our handy parks map. If you are wanting to visit the best playgrounds on the Gold Coast then you can read this article and find the perfect place to visit with your family.

Best playgrounds on the Gold Coast

Palm Beach Parklands

Re-opening mid-2022 after a major refurbishment, this nautical-themed playground is a destination Gold Coast playground like no other. It is sometimes referred to as Pirate Park. While this easily made the best playgrounds on the Gold Coast list, we suggest this might be the best!

Boasting a giant pirate ship play structure, mega slide, baskets-swings, telescopes, hammocks and more, your Brisbane Kids’ imagination can be ignited as they play by the water.

There is plenty of opportunity for sand and water play and relaxing beside Currumbin Creek. A tasty café is located on site and plenty of shady spots for picnics, so long visits at this playground are doable.

Toilets, showers and change rooms are nearby and as kilometres of walking tracks. Palm Beach Parklands is close to the creek, so extra care should be taken with young children.

Playground features: Nautical theme, flying fox, suspension bridge, swings, slides for older and younger children, climbing equipment, pathways, near Currumbin Creek, café, BBQs, change rooms, showers and toilets.

Location: 945 Gold Coast Highway, Palm Beach

Broadwater Parklands

monorail and scenic reserve

Broadwater Parklands at Southport are a must-see when visiting the Gold Coast with kids. Located across from Australia Fair Shopping Centre, and overlooking the stunning Broadwater, you will be hard-pressed to find a more picturesque playground.

The pedal monorail encircling the playground is a drawcard, as is the shallow waterplay area, jumping pillow and fun play equipment. The mini-traffic track has many obstacles, signs and crossings, so bring your kid’s favourite wheels when visiting.

If you visit during the summer, an inflatable aqua park is often set up on the beach and is ideal for older children and adults (fees apply).

Alternatively, a shaded swimming enclosure can be found on the beach for those looking for a less active option to get wet. A café, toilets and plenty of picnic spots mean you can spend all day at the Broadwater Parklands, knowing everyone will be entertained and well-fed.

Playground features: Partially fenced playground, jumping pillow, water play area, pedal monorail, Liberty swing, slides, climbing equipment, adjacent to beach, BBQ, picnic tables, café and toilets.

Location: Marine Parade, Southport

Peninsula Playground at the Broadwater Parklands

Peninsula Playground, located on stunning waterfront property with breathtaking views of the Gold Coast Seaway, is a state-of-the-art $5 million adventure outdoor playground.

This exceptional playground offers an array of contemporary amenities, including in-ground trampolines, water play areas, rock climbing walls, multiple slides, and captivating ocean-themed elements highlighting sea life and conservation.

At the heart of the playground stands a magnificent spiral activity tower that resembles a modern art sculpture, captivating both older kids and younger children. This would be one of our kids’ favourite playgrounds in South East Queensland.

Playground features: Unfenced playground, accessible toilets, inground trampolines, child-operated water play, adaptive swings, BBQs, picnic tables and onsite parking.

Location: Broadwater Parklands North, Southport

Kurrawa All-Abilities Playground

kurrawa all abilities playground

Every parent’s playground wish has been granted at Broadbeach’s fully fenced, well-shaded, all-abilities playground and an easy choice to add to the best playgrounds on the Gold Coast playgrounds list. Featuring play equipment to suit the needs of children of all ages and abilities, there are plenty of opportunities for fun and imagination throughout the three play zones within this playground.

Children can enjoy sand play, flying foxes, swings (including a Liberty Swing), slides, spinners, climbing equipment, and imaginary play while safely contained within the fenced playground. Due to the fenced nature of the park, this is a popular Gold Coast Kids’ party venue.

As a bonus, the playground is located next to the Kurrawa Surf Club and beach, so when the kids (or adults) tire of the playground you can easily transition to beach play.

Playground features: Fully fenced, flying fox, swings, slides, Liberty swing, climbing equipment, sand play, near beach, BBQs and picnic tables nearby, accessible toilets.

Location: Old Burleigh Road, Broadbeach

Ronnie Long Park

The colourful Ronnie Long Park is perched at the northern end of Palm Beach, in front of the Tallebudgera Surf Club and is a great place for kids to enjoy after a meal at the surf club. Featuring a unique surf lifesaver theme, the playground is split into two main areas – the tower and transport zones.

With plenty of opportunities to climb, slide and swing, children will enjoy this beachside playground, which is well-shaded, with ample greenspace adjacent to the playground.

Playground features: Partially fenced, swings, slide, climbing equipment, close to the beach, plenty of green space, and toilets.

Location: 1505 Gold Coast Hwy, Palm Beach North

Pratten Park

Pratten Park Broadbeach playground with monorail track and shade structures.

Conveniently situated between the beach and the Esplanade at Broadbeach, and right beside an access point for a patrolled beach, Pratten Park is a great spot for a play when visiting the Gold Coast.

Children will have fun zooming around on the pedal vehicles, which encircle the playground. Plenty of climbing opportunities await, as do swings, merry-go-rounds and rockers. Partially shaded, with plenty of space to enjoy a BBQ or picnic, spending a few hours near Pratten Park is easy.

Playground features: Unfenced playground, partially shaded, a small fort, pedal monorail, small flying fox, spring rockers, swings, slides, adjacent to beach, BBQs, picnic tables and accessible toilets.

Location: Old Burleigh Road, Broadbeach

Read our detailed in-person review of Pratten Park.

Inclusive Playgrounds: Fun for All Abilities

Kurrawa All Abilities playground is one of the best all-abilities playgrounds on the Gold Coast and in South East Queensland and the best park to bring a child who uses a wheelchair. This inclusive playground was co-designed with Gold Coast City Council co-designed and Disability Services Queensland.

  • Kurrawa All Abilities playground is fenced. We especially appreciated that the gate system is the same as pool fencing, making it inaccessible to kids and self-closing. One of the biggest challenges we see with fenced playgrounds is that parents will prop open the gate which cannot happen here.
  • The playground equipment is linked by wide wheelchair-accessible pathways.
  • There are 3 sand tables at Wheelchair height.
  • The playground is covered in shade sails.
  • The undersea zone is also wheelchair accessible with all the submarine controls at chair height.
  • A liberty swing and sway bridge are all-inclusive features of this all-abilities Gold Coast playground.
  • The accessible toilets include an accessible change area with an adult-sized (adjustable) change area bench and hoist.
  • access to the change area including bench and hoist is made via a Master Locksmith Access Key

Picnic Areas and BBQ Facilities: Enjoy a Family Day Out

The best part of all the best playgrounds on the Gold Coast is that they generally feature BBQ facilities and nearly always offer sufficient greenspace for a family picnic. If you want to know if a particular Gold Coast park offers BBQs and toilets, just head to the specific review on the Brisbane Kids website. In Queensland Australia electric BBQs in public parks are generally free for community use. If there is a dollar cost, we will also mention this in our detailed park reviews.

Playgrounds with Water Features

Little girl playing with water pump at Peninsula Playground.

The Gold Coast is literally on the doorstep of some of the best beaches in the world. Peninsula Playground at the Broadwater Parklands and Broadwater Parklands itself features some limited water play features like the water pump shown above (located in Peninsula Playground). In addition, during Summer an inflatable aqua park is often set up in the calm waters of the Broadwater and is ideal for older children and adults (fees apply).

Indoor Play Options on the Gold Coast

We hope you enjoyed our list of the best playgrounds on the Gold Coast. As a bonus, there is usually a café onsite so the adults can relax and have a snack while watching the kids play. Check out Indoor Playgrounds at the Gold Coast here.

FAQ about the best Best Playgrounds on the Gold Coast

Why are these the best playgrounds on the Gold Coast?

After visiting a lot of Gold Coast playgrounds, we asked our kids what they thought were the best playgrounds on the Gold Coast. As parents, we made sure they included facilities like toilets so the whole family is able to enjoy the experience.

Does it cost money to visit the best playgrounds on the Gold Coast

No! Community parks are free in Australia. You only pay entry to commercial theme parks like Dream World etc.

What else can we do on the Gold Coast other than playgrounds?

  • Visit the beach (it’s a no brainer). Our favourite beaches for kids are Currumbin Creek and Rock Pools and Tallebudgera Creek (and beach).
  • Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary is a great place to take visitors. You can feed the rainbow lorikeets twice a day (without having to pay for entry to the sanctuary). Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary also boasts a high ropes course that takes kids (and adults) through the sanctuary via the trees.
  • Check out local events happening at HOTA which is the Gold Coasts’ main cultural centre.

You could also organise a surf lesson party which is not only unique but will teach the kids a new skill and no doubt make for some fun memories. Most surf schools have a party option you can book.
