Important Playground Features

So, what makes a fantastic park? As families looking to have the best possible experience when visiting a playground, we know there are non-negotiable features. If you have multiple young children, a fenced playground may be a priority, toilets are always a must (especially if you plan on spending a long time there or having a park party), and sometimes it may be parking, BBQ or shade you seek.

Here is a round-up of playground features our Brisbane Kids followers said were important when choosing a playground to visit.

Best playgrounds in Brisbane: Important features

  1. Shade

Green playground equipment and blue and yellow shade sails at Symphony Crescent Park.

It is no surprise shade comes in at number one for must-have features at a playground. Living in Southeast Queensland, a predominantly warm and sunny place throughout the year, everyone must be protected from the hot sun when enjoying playground facilities.

We are not just talking about a token shade sail, either.

Having large, established trees to rest under and sheltered picnic tables to snack on is always a bonus after a big day playing at the park. But more importantly, having most of the play equipment covered by shade is essential, particularly when metal objects are involved, like slides. Shaded seating areas in and around the play equipment also rate high, as many parents and carers like to sit and watch the kids play when not joining in on the fun.

  1. Toilets

Toilet facilities at Kalinga Park.

Nothing is worse than being out with the kids and someone needing to go to the toilet (usually at the most inconvenient time). This is made even more frustrating when no bathroom is available nearby. Having clean, functioning and accessible public toilets at playgrounds, especially the larger ones, is essential for birthday parties.

Not only should toilet facilities be available, but they should be open during daylight hours and, if possible, include changing facilities for babies. After all, no one wants to leave the playground after only 10 minutes because nature calls.

  1. Parking

flat pathway and carpark

Most trips to the park involve at least a water bottle, but usually a scooter, bike, soccer ball, kite, pram and snacks. Parking available next to the playground or very close by is essential, especially if you are venturing out with more than one child.

Having the car close by for the multiple trips back to the car you usually have to complete is always handy.  Nearby car parking also avoids having to cross busy roads with young children. FREE parking is also appreciated.

Wizardry High Tea at Stamford Plaza Brisbane – Review https://brisbanekids.com.au/wizardry-high-tea-stamford-plaza-brisbane-review/ https://brisbanekids.com.au/wizardry-high-tea-stamford-plaza-brisbane-review/#respond Tue, 02 Apr 2024 00:15:32 +0000 https://brisbanekids.com.au/?p=352286 Get ready to be transported to a magical world at the Stamford Plaza Brisbane’s Wizardry High Tea! While this experience is clearly aimed at Harry Potter fans, the food is decadent and delicious and the atmosphere is enthralling even for Muggles (non-wizarding folk, for the uninitiated).

The Wizardry High Tea is a family-friendly high tea session, with plenty included to excite young witches and wizards. It’s also sophisticated enough for their older companions, with all the expected high tea favourites including salmon sandwiches (with the crusts cut off, of course), scones with jam and cream, and a wide selection of petit fours, as well as other delicious surprises like a popcorn cart, meat pies, and jelly cups. A highlight of the event is a sweets section that would be right at home in Honeydukes.

Our Wizardry High Tea Experience

a plate of dessert options at the Wizardry High Tea

When we entered the Stamford Plaza Brisbane, we were welcomed warmly. I think our costumes gave away the purpose of our visit – I’m not too sure how many of their regular hotel guests wear cloaks and carry wands around!

From the lobby, we were directed to the grand staircase to head up to the ballroom. We stopped for a quick photo on the stairs (which the kids loved), and headed up towards a welcome desk and a small foyer with wizard theming (so we know we were in the right place!).

When the double doors opened, purple smoke billowed towards us and we couldn’t help but pause in wonder to take in the incredible displays and tables of food lining the walls before us. Once we stepped inside, we were greeted with offers of champagne flutes for the grown ups and special raspberry and lime lemonade for the children.

After taking a quick look at the incredible displays of food and decorations in this room, we headed into the adjoining ballroom to find our table.

Kids posing near the doors of the Wizardry High Tea

Each table was decorated with either a cauldron or a mirrored lightning bolt, and the dining room was beautifully themed with glowing lights, an animated castle display with flying bats, curtained walls with vines, and broomsticks strung across the room overhead. We noticed parts of the score of Harry Potter playing at times, which was perfectly fitting and added to the magical atmosphere.

With so much on offer, we could stroll into the adjoining room for food as often as we liked, and only needed to take the food we wanted to try. We thought this was an excellent idea, after seeing many things left untouched on the tiers at other high teas we’d been to in the past. Each time we went into the food room, we noticed new elements to the displays and new delicious morsels to try – there was so much to take in! There’s also a generous selection of teas and coffee available.

The Stamford Plaza Brisbane staff were warm, friendly and helpful. We were all offered fresh drinks regularly (champagne, water, and the lemonade mocktail for the children), and the staff were thrilled to show us little details in the displays throughout our visit. They went above and beyond to ensure we had everything we wanted.

Wizardry High Tea Highlights

popcorn at lollies at The Wizardry High Tea

With lots of kid-friendly food options to choose from, our son loved the meringue desserts and chicken and avocado baguette sandwiches, and our daughter’s favourite treats were the popcorn and jelly cups. We all found the Wizardry High Tea to be a truly magical experience and a special holiday outing for the whole family. I would recommend a light breakfast before attending, as there is definitely plenty to eat here, especially for people with a sweet tooth!

After our high tea experience, we took a walk through the Brisbane Botanic Gardens next door and saw several other families from the high tea had the same idea. The Stamford Plaza Brisbane is ideally located for a lovely stroll through the gardens or through the city to readjust to Muggle life after being transported to this wizarding world. Now we just need to find a time turner so we can experience it all over again!

Head to the Stamford Plaza Brisbane website to find out more about their Wizardry High Tea and traditional high tea sittings.

Map of Best Scooter Parks in Brisbane

Other Brisbane parks with tracks suitable for scooters

What Makes a Good Scooter Park?

In order to classify a scooter park as ‘good’ we think it is important they contain some, if not all, of the following:

  • Ramps
  • Obstacles
  • Sections of flat tracks
  • Twists, turns and corners

Whilst the following are not mandatory, it is always an added bonus if a scooter park has:

  • Shaded areas
  • Toilet facilities
  • Separate areas for junior and senior riders
  • Additional activities on offer such as basketball courts, playgrounds, green space, and BBQ/picnic facilities

Things to consider

Heading out on the scooters is a fun activity for the whole family, though it is worth considering a few things before you venture out on two wheels.

Helmets – no matter what age the rider is, wearing a helmet when scootering is imperative.

Safety gear – for beginners, consider donning some extra safety gear when on a scooter, such as knee pads and elbow pads. Long pants and closed-in shoes may also provide added protection from inevitable scrapes.

Sun protection – as with any outdoor activity make sun protection a priority (think hats, sunglasses and a sun hat).

Drinks – Scootering is thirsty work, so pack plenty of water to rehydrate riders

Timing of your visit – If you are visiting with younger children, or those who are still learning, time your visit so you are not scootering during peak times. Quieter times tend to be early in the morning on weekends, or during school hours on weekdays.

First Aid – Chances are there are going to be some bumps, scrapes and minor injuries, so consider packing a basic first-aid kit containing Band-Aids, antiseptic cream, water and wipes.

It is worth noting that public scooter parks are unsupervised and usually filled with children (young and old) of varying skill levels. So, before your child joins in, stand back and watch other riders to suss out the situation.

If there is a park perfect for scooters we have not listed above, please be sure to let us know.

Best Bike Paths For Kids in Brisbane https://brisbanekids.com.au/top-5-must-do-kid-friendly-cycle-paths-in-brisbane/ https://brisbanekids.com.au/top-5-must-do-kid-friendly-cycle-paths-in-brisbane/#comments Thu, 28 Feb 2013 23:42:26 +0000 http://brisbanekids.com.au/?p=23659 There’s no doubt about it – children love bikes! From tiny trikes to snazzy scooters, cycles represent fun, fresh air and exercise and a free activity you can do in Brisbane with kids. As kids get older, bikes become their preferred form of transport so it’s a great idea to encourage safe riding skills from an early age. Luckily Brisbane has a host of kid friendly cycle paths which you can enjoy as a family for fitness and pleasure. Kid friendly cycle paths should be free from safety hazards, not overly strenuous to ride along and nearby basic amenities. Here’s our list of must-do cycle paths in Brisbane!

Ithaca Creek – Red Hill to Newmarket

This Brisbane cycle path starts at Woolcock Park in Red Hill, which features an unusual sensory playground, barbecues and a modern amenities block. From here, the 6-7km return trip follows the creek, so ducks and water dragons are likely guest stars on your ride. The cycle path is shaded by trees for much of the way and avoids traffic, except from one short section on a quiet side road.

It is an easy ride for all abilities, but energetic kids may enjoy ripping up a small trail bike area which appears around the half-way mark.

Hornibrook Esplanade – Clontarf to Woody Point

The Redcliffe Peninsula, just north of Brisbane, features cycle paths that span approximately 40 km and run almost uninterrupted along its foreshore along some of the best parks and playgrounds in Brisbane’s north. Some sections of this cycle path network, however, are more kid friendly than others. Known as the ‘southern rim ride’, the Clontarf to Woody Point section is a flat, 11km return trip running between the Ted Smout Bridge and the Woody Point jetty.

Along with pristine bay views, this seaside ride passes an informative visitors’ centre, several amenities blocks, barbecue areas, fish and chip shops and playgrounds. The area hosts sports clubs including jet ski groups and kite flyers, and kids will be entertained by the periodic arrival of sky divers!

The Esplanade – Wynnum Manly

Brisbane may not be famous for its beaches, but it does offer many lovely seaside cycle paths. Commencing at Waterloo Esplanade in Wynnum, this 10km return trip runs along the shoreline all the way through to the Manly marinas.

Whether you start or finish at the Wynnum end, the big attraction here is the Wynnum Water Park, which includes a wading pool and an ‘aquativity’ space, where sculptured whales squirt water high into the air like a giant backyard sprinkler.

At Manly, kids can be rewarded for their ride with some yacht spotting and a bite to eat at one of the area’s many cafes and chip shops. There are picnic shelters, playgrounds and amenities blocks dotted along the ride.

Northey Street Farm – Windsor

This is a short (4km) but action-packed ride taking in creek life and the bustling Northey Street City Farm. Located just north of Brisbane city, this cycle path starts at the end of Bishop Street where the road becomes an open reserve. From there, follow the shady trail along Enoggera Creek (watch for lizards and ducks!) until it joins up with the Bowen Bridge Heritage Trail.

The Heritage Trail includes a rainforest grove, sculptures and pieces of art that you and your Brisbane kids can enjoy spotting amidst the trees. Finish your ride at the Farm, an active urban growing space where kids can inspect the veggie patches and visit the chickens. On Sundays, this becomes a bustling market with organic bread, coffee, and produce for sale.

Brisbane River – West End to South Brisbane

Starting at Orleigh Park ferry terminal, this cycle path follows the gentle curves of the Brisbane river taking in views across to Toowong and St Lucia and finishing under the William Jolly Bridge at South Brisbane.

The park land along the river front includes playgrounds, amenities blocks and barbecue areas and are home to several Brisbane sporting clubs, so your Brisbane Kids might spot some rowing or sailing action as they ride.

The cycle path runs through Davies Park, which hosts a lively Saturday flea market, and there are coffee shops a-plenty nearby.

Turn this ride into a day trip by incorporating a ferry ride or spending some time at Southbank. Check the Brisbane City Council website for instructions on how to take bikes on public transport.

Sandgate/Shorncliffe Cycleway – Sandgate to Shorncliffe

Beginning on the Esplanade at Flinders Parade in Sandgate and finishing at the Shorncliffe Jetty, this cycleway covers around 6km of both flat and slightly hilly paths. Whilst this route does include some residential street riding, the majority is comprised of bike and walking paths that are dotted with some gorgeous ocean-front views and historical landmarks along the way.

Places to enjoy along the way include Sandgate Swimming Pool, Lower Moora Park and Shorncliffe Jetty.

Cabbage Tree Creek Bikeway – McDowall to Bracken Ridge

Cycle through calming bushland on this sealed bikeway that stretches from McDowall to Bracken Ridge. Passing through Aspley, Carseldine and Fitzgibbon, Cabbage Tree Creek Bikeway is predominantly off-road and presents a quiet ride with several places to pause and explore.

There are many parks to stop at along the way, including Beckett Road Park and Philip Vaughan Park, along with the Carseldine Markets to check out on Saturdays. At the end of the route is Emily Seebohm Aquatic Centre and Bracken Ridge BMX Track – one of Australia’s largest, custom-built BMX tracks.

Kedron Brook Bikeway – Mitchelton to Toombul

Running west to east, Kedron Brook Bikeway has some great sections for families to explore. Stretching for almost 20km, there are several places to begin and end this ride within Everton Park, Stafford, Grange, Gordon Park, Lutwyche, and Kedron.

This creek-side bike path passes near four suburban shopping centres (Brookside Shopping Centre, Stafford City, Lutwyche City, and Toombul Shopping Centre) as well as several parks, the largest of which include Teralba Park, Grinstead Park, and Kalinga Park.

These are just some of the many Brisbane cycle paths which are perfect for a day out with your family and friends. Many bikeways link to other bike paths and larger bikeways as well, so you really could spend several weekends exploring them all—energy permitting!

Of course there are numerous other bike paths in Brisbane for Kids- feel free to note them in the comments below.
