Fort Lytton School Holiday Program https://brisbanekids.com.au/family/fort-lytton-school-holiday-program/ Tue, 30 May 2023 03:53:46 +0000 https://brisbanekids.com.au/?post_type=local_business&p=312202 Based on an historical site dating back to the 1800s, the Fort Lytton school holiday program, educational programs and night shows are known for high quality interpretation of the past.

The History of Fort Lytton

Fort Lytton was a major defensive site for Brisbane from 1881 to 1945. During those years, it was also an important training ground for soldiers. Although the fort was never attacked, the training it provided was put to the test in both World Wars. It is now managed by the Heritage Parks Unit of Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service.

Fort Lytton in World War II

There were many units stationed at the Fort Lytton for periods of training. In World War II, for the first-time, women were also stationed there. They were stationed in various services, including the AWAS (Australian Women’s Army Service). Without these women, the fort could not have fulfilled its role as a defensive and training base.

Fort Lytton school holiday programs

It all started 13 years ago with Raiders of the Lost Fort, a dramatic story exploring the forts history through artefacts. This event used the historic site, actors in-role and participatory drama to facilitate a fun learning experience. Numbers were kept low to enable fuller participation with all the children. This program set the mould for all future interpretive work with young people on site.

Carry On Fort Lytton school holiday program

Carry On Fort Lytton is this latest school holiday program and is the most theatrical so far. The actors are characters, and there is participation, but this program engages all involved: children, parents, grandparents and carers. There are set pieces, but also lots of improvisation.

Scenario

It’s 1944 at Lytton Battery. Corporal Jones, AWAS, is ready to train the new recruits, but she isn’t expecting there to be men amongst them. Sergeant Wilson, Army, arrives to begin training too, but he can’t believe there are women in the new batch. It’s an administrative error, of course, but how will they get through the day and be ready for inspection by the officers? Corporal Jones has a plan, but will it work? And so begins a roller-coaster of activities and preparation.

Activities

Carry On Fort Lytton is a hands-on experience: making caps and semaphore flags; and learning to spell a word using the flags. There’s parade ground drill, and gun drill (it’s on a replica twin six pounder that actually moves!). There’s lots of marching and singing too. All this comes together when the officer turns up for the inspection and everyone has to do their best to pass (which of course they do, with flying colours!).

Testimonials

The experience was authentic, entertaining, educational, engaging, interactive and most importantly inclusive for all age groups (including adults!). The ability to keep the attention of children for over 2 hours is a real war won!!!!” – Caterina and Elvis Senese

Thank you so much for creating and acting in the Carry On Fort Lytton program. My three children and I attended the program today and we all had a ball. The program and script were so well thought out and rehearsed. Seargent Wilson and Corporal Jones were both tremendous characters that had obviously been very well fleshed out by you both. Both of your acting skills are superlative. I was in awe of you both the whole time, and my children thought (and still think) you were real people. They also believe we are due back there tomorrow for our semaphore test. I was extremely impressed that neither of you broke character once. Please pass on my sincere admiration for her brilliant acting skills to Corporal Jones! My children loved the whole experience, but especially the gun firing drill at the end, where they hit the target and passed the inspection. My little one also mentioned he enjoyed using the special army glue and making the flags. I commend you both on such an impressive show. It was so well thought out with respect to what children like, the timings of the various activities, the pacing, and building to a climactic and exciting ending.” – Alison Poulson

Our grandson, together with my husband and I, attended the Carry on Fort Lytton morning on Wednesday, 5 July – and what a wonderful morning it was! The organisation, the presenters, the script, the knowledge, the fun, the craft – everything – was of a high standard and thoroughly enjoyable. The format of the morning allowed for rest periods but it also enabled to keep everyone’s interest at all times. It wasn’t only for the children – it was for the adults as well. Our daughter was originally taking our grandson the week before, but the presentation was postponed – she was a tad miffed after we told her all about it!! The three of us were caught up in the presentation – and the facts – so much of which we weren’t aware of – but were presented in such an interesting way.” – Gwenneth and Graeme Klee

My kids loved this sports camp last holidays, now I see why! This isn’t your typical sports camp, where kids focus on one sport and the technical nuances… this was just pure fun, very well run, with lots of different sports and BOTH my kids loved it. Highly recommend this camp for the upcoming holidays if your kids are looking for some fun.” Beth – Norman Park.

Frequently asked questions

What happens if it rains?

Q Kids Sport makes sure they only use venues that will be able to facilitate their camp numbers indoors/undercover if it does rain. They have plans in place to alter the structure of the program to cater for such occasions. Rest assured, your child’s experience will not be compromised if this does happen.

Who are the coaches?

The majority of Q Kids Sport’s coaches are working coaches who are also studying a Bachelor’s degree in education, majoring in Health and Physical Education. They also have practical experience working in OSHC (Outside School Hours Care) centres or similar. They love their sport, having played multiple sports growing up and still do. One coach has been fortunate enough to become a current professional athlete in the AFLW league.

They all hold valid Blue Card and First Aid Certificates.

My child is 7 and I’m worried if they need to go to the toilet or need help to tie their shoelace. What assistance is there for them just in case?

Q Kids Sport has a dedicated onsite liaison officer whose primary role is to provide assistance to the kids and parents where and when required, if the coach is unable to. Toilet breaks, minor first aid, shoelace tying, help with drink bottles, etc are all covered. The liaison officer is supported by the onsite coaching director, whose job is to make sure everything is safe, support the coaches and liaison officer, keep the day on schedule and provide support where needed.

Can I drop my kids off and leave, or are parents required to stay?

Once you check your child in at the registration desk on the day, feel free to leave them with the Q Kids Sport team until the designated pickup time (usually 3-3:30pm). Alternatively, parents are more than welcome to stick around and watch for as long as they want.

With sport camps running these upcoming school holidays, head to the Q Kids Sport website to find out more and book your child’s place.

Testimonials

The Buzz Media Co students learning about camera.

My daughters Billie and Matilda were a little bit shy, Matilda more then Billie, until the radio camps, learning how to use a microphone to help them build skills to one day be radio hosts, or YouTubers. The radio camps have expanded their brains not only in the Media industry but with school too. Matilda has confidently created a movie of our family holiday for show and tell, with voice over and editing. Billie now shines on stage at school and the fear of oral presentations doesn’t seem to bother her that much. As a mum I can’t wait to see what these girls can create and achieve in the future with the help of these camps. And to think they only went to 2 of them and the skills they gained is priceless.” – Camp Mum of Matilda, 9 & Billie, 7

My big girl was so shy and withdrawn and conscious of her speech/language delay. The keyword in that last sentence is ‘was’. Since attending a Buzz Camp, she’s really come out of her shell and come forward in leaps and bounds. The surge of confidence is phenomenal. With her highest grade this year being in drama, I have no doubt that her participation in the camp can be attributed to that.” – Kara Robbins

Amity absolutely loves participating in the Buzz Media Camps! She has the best time, using her big voice to make up for her tiny body. Learning through games with the other children is definitely her favourite!” – Amity’s Mum

Can I reserve a booth? Unfortunately, Archie Brothers Bowen Hills does not reserve tables for their guests; it is first come, first served. If you are looking to score a private space, you will need to book a function. Check out their party packages!

Do I have to book? Not at all! Archie Brothers loves spontaneity, so all of their activities operate on a first come, first served basis. However, they do get really busy on the weekends, so it is recommended that you get here early to make the most of your visit.

Do I have to wear Bowling Shoes? Archie Brothers Cirque Electriq encourages guests to wear their bowling shoes. They are conversation starters, offer Instagram inspo, they’re fashionable, and, most importantly, they add to the fun! If you prefer, you can wear your own shoes as long as they’re deemed safe and appropriate (closed toe and flat soled e.g. trainers, sneakers, boat shoe).
