Basketball is a fantastic sport for Brisbane kids and players of all ages and abilities. It’s a sport that allows players to make friends, develop physical skills and practice teamwork. It’s also a sport played around the world in parks, cities and in some of the biggest arenas. It’s also an olympic sport and has professional leagues around the world. While the standard game has 5 players on each team trying to shoot the ball through hoops at opposite ends of a court, there are modified forms of the game including wheelchair basketball, 3 on 3 competitions with 1 hoop and walking basketball.
Basketball Queensland is the not-for-profit governing body for basketball in the state. With over 45,000 registered players across more than 30 different associations across the state, including 8 across the greater Brisbane region, there are local clubs and competitions for everyone.
Basketball Queensland administers a number of competitions and programs throughout the year, including the Basketball Queensland Junior Basketball Competition, the annual junior state championships, and the Queensland Basketball League. Basketball is one of the most popular sports in Australia, is a non-contact sport and provides a safe and enjoyable opportunity for players of all age groups right throughout the year, with many of our associations boasting state-of-the-art stadium facilities.
Basketball Queensland’s competitions and development programs cater for those just starting out in the sport, right through to providing training programs and support for elite junior and senior players representing their association, Queensland, and Australia, through our High Performance Program.
Basketball for kids in Brisbane
All associations offer programs for juniors, which is an ideal way to introduce basketball to boys and girls, including those with physical and developmental impairments. They uses fun activities and games to teach the fundamentals of the sport and to develop general motor skills, and is run at schools and Basketball Queensland associations. Programs can be run indoors or outdoors, during school terms or as holiday camps, with a wide range of activities, session plans and guides for coaches, teachers and parents running the program.
Each association runs its own programs catering for everyone from beginners to competitive players, and they all welcome players of all skill levels and experience.
