Brisbane German Language School’s educational programs seek to engage all students (from 4 years to high school age) through age appropriate activities and experiences that are led by passionate native speakers. The mini-learners can expect plenty of active song and dance. Older students engage with a wide variety of creative activities that promote learning and understanding. All have the opportunity to share in community cultural events throughout the year including Karneval (Fasching), Osterfest, Laternenfest and the School’s end of year Weihnachtsfeier, which includes plenty of tasty German foods!

The Brisbane German Language School is a not-for-profit community organisation. Their mission is to promote the language and culture of German-speaking countries within the Brisbane and broader Southeast Queensland region. They mainly operate in-person out of St Peter’s Lutheran College in Indooroopilly on Saturday mornings (matching school terms of 9 weeks each), however they also have a number of in-person programs at various locations around Brisbane, as well as online offerings.

The BGLS is also exploring the option of offering courses on the Gold Coast. If you are interested, please reach out via the contact details on their website.

Part of the Brisbane German/Swiss/Austrian community

The BGLS is an important part of the broader Brisbane German/Swiss/Austrian community having commenced operation in the 1960s. While they also offer adult classes, they are the only organisation that offers German language programs to youth students in Brisbane. Some of their students go on to undertake a German immersion program at local high schools including Kenmore State High School, Ferry Grove State High School, Cavendish Road State High School and the SMT Academy.

Since most programs are held at the same time, this allows you (parents) to also attend an adult program while your child/ren attend theirs.

More recently, the School is in the process of seeking to gain accreditation as an official Goethe Examination centre, which will enable this important service to be more readily available in Southeast Queensland.

Testimonials

This is a wonderful German language school, we are so happy here. The teachers are all native German speakers, they are very approachable and so dedicated to making the language easy to learn. The classes are relaxed and fun, and other students are open-minded and easy-going. The smaller class size means you get more chance to practice your German, and more access to the wonderful teachers. I love that I can attend my Adult classes while my son attends his Youth class. What a great bonding experience for us, we both look forward to our Saturday morning outing. We love it so much, we drive an hour each way to attend – distance is irrelevant when you find a school this good. The school has a really nice community / big-family feel to it. It’s more than just a language school, it’s a German culture school too. Highly recommended to anyone looking to learn the German language and join a fantastic community.

What a wonderful community and nurturing environment! We have been going to this school for the last four years now and we love it. Apart from learning the language, there are many cultural events throughout the year. My kids have made good friends and look forward to every weekend. The teachers are wonderful and very approachable. I would definitely recommend this school to friends.

Being a native speaker myself, the German program with the BGLS ensures my child understands there is a broader German community out there beyond just me.
