MyTime Groups are parent/carer groups with an add on playgroups created especially for parents and carers of children with a disability or chronic medical condition. It is an opportunity to connect with others in similar situations with similar challenges and have a break while you learn something new.
Who are MyTime Groups open to?
If you are a parent or carer who is eligible for the Carer Allowance (child) for a child with a disability or chronic medical condition (up to the age of 16) then you are eligible to attend. If you are a grandparent or babysitter then you may be eligible to attend as a guest depending on the capacity of the group.
The add on playgroups that operate alongside the My Time Groups are for pre-school aged children. It is also worth noting that MyTime groups are free and they do not impact on your NDIS funding.
What to expect at a MyTime Group session
MyTime has been created to give you a chance to unwind, connect with others and learn something new. A trained facilitator leads these groups to help you connect with others but also to share local resources and services that might be of help to you. Facilitators will have experience in disability, parent or family support and are there to ensure the discussion remains inclusive and welcoming.
Each group is around 4 to 12 in size and groups usually meet once a week during school hours and school terms. It is okay if you think you can’t commit to every single week.
Groups aren’t necessarily diagnosis specific, and you can come even while going through the diagnosis process. Some groups, however, are run specifically by certain organisations. The best way to find one near you is to search via their website and speak to your local group coordinator https://www.mytime.net.au/groups/
While your group time happens, your child/ren will be with a play helper who will engage kids with similar activities you would find in a playgroup such as singing and craft, drawing and games.

What if I am scared about going?
Firstly, know that you are not alone in this feeling. Further, that your local group coordinator is likely to allay any fears you have, so while you are thinking about going, find a local group near you and get in touch with them now! The MyTime website shows research that showed 9 out of 10 members felt MyTime was beneficial. You can do this!
