Autism Behavioural Intervention Queensland (ABIQ) was formed to enhance the treatment of children with autism in Queensland and to promote the use of Applied Behavioural Analysis (ABA). Decades of research have demonstrated that ABA is the most effective form of early intervention for children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). The purpose of ABIQ is to assist and support families who are conducting an ABA program for their child with ASD in Queensland.
What is ABA?
Good quality Applied Behavioural Analysis programs are individualised and cater to the child’s unique strengths and areas of difficulty. ABA provides a framework for breaking down complex skills into smaller tasks that can be taught more easily; creating many opportunities to learn and master new skills; using positive reinforcement procedures to strengthen new behaviours and assessing the purpose of challenging behaviours so to inform effective behaviour management strategies and teaching appropriate replacement behaviours. ABA programs focus on all areas of development including communication and language, behaviour, learning how to learn, play and social skills, independence and academics.
