50 Camping Gift Ideas for Kids https://brisbanekids.com.au/50-camping-gift-ideas-for-kids/ https://brisbanekids.com.au/50-camping-gift-ideas-for-kids/#respond Fri, 10 May 2024 01:56:54 +0000 https://brisbanekids.com.au/?p=344412 If your family loves the great outdoors and you are looking some great camping gifts for your kids, then look no further. From the obvious to the unique, we have researched far and wide to put together this list of some of the best camping gift ideas for kids that we could find.

Camping Gift Ideas for Kids – Camping Gear

Camping gift ideas for kids camping gear.

Backpack

All kids will delight in having their own camping backpack. Its a great idea for parents too, as the kids can fill it with their own toys and entertainment items to keep in the car for them for long drives, delve into while they wait for the campsite to be set up, or pack and take out on a day trip with the family.

Sleeping Bag

A super light-weight but warm sleeping bag is a great camping gift idea for kids who love to camp. Depending on their age and interests, there are a range of fun and themed bags you can buy for them.

Swag

For slightly older kids who love to have their own independence when camping, getting them their own swag is a great gift idea.

Lantern

Sure, they can get a torch, but kids love to carry around and old-fashioned style lantern when they are camping. Of course, opt for batteries instead of a flame though! Laterns are also a lot easier to set up beside their bed at night.

Toiletry Set

One thing kids will use every day when camping (at least, you hope!) is a toiletry set. Buying them their own toiletry bag (preferably one that is waterproof and unfolds to hang on the back of a shower door), complete with mini shampoo / conditioner and body wash, will make them excited to get clean at the end of a big day outdoors.

Camping Chair

Their very own camping chair is an awesome gift. There are many super cute toddler options out there, or you could opt for a fancy one that reclines and comes with its own drink holder too!

A Spork

Show me a camper who doesn’t love a spork! For those who aren’t in the know, these cleverly designed camping utensils are a combination fork, spoon and knife. You can even get them personalised!

Hammock

There are many different-sized (and shaped) hammocks that are a perfect camping accessory for kids. Strung between two trees, it will become the favoured resting spot for anyone who has one.

Oodie

For those colder camping nights, an Oodie (or onesie) has become the must-have campsite attire. Pretty much what your child will live in once they have one, there are a million styles now to choose from too.

Raincoat

We all hope that only blue skies will be visible when a camping trip is looming however, more often than not, a shower will fall while you’re away. As parents, we dread this, but kids actually love a good downfall and will be the first ones out there in their raincoat splashing in puddles.

Thongs

Yep, you will definitely need some thongs if you are going to be camping. Super easy and quick to get on and off, they will become the go-to footwear for the kids when you are camping – especially when heading for a shower.

Aqua Shoes

If you are camping near rock pools or creeks, a pair of aqua shoes will come in super handy for protecting little feet from getting some sharp cuts.

Gumboots

The perfect accessory for any child who plans to jump in a lot of outdoor puddles, or even if the area you are camping in is quite muddy. A pair of sparkling gumboots are super practical, but will have them looking the part too!

Hiking Boots

For kids that love to go hiking, a pair of special hiking boots is most practical and perfect gift you can get them.

Crocs

Yes, I went there. Love them or hate them, Crocs are actually a very sensible footwear idea for kids who go camping a lot. They are weatherproof, hardy, and (for some at least) are a fashion statement.

Camping Gift Ideas for Kids – Exploration Tools

Camping gift ideas for kids child exploring with walkie talkie.

Water Bottle

Not just any old water bottle though – a special camping one. Some camp drink bottles also come with a hook that you can attach to their backpack or a chair.

Head Lamp

Yep, kids love a good head lamp. Perfect for when they want to keep their hands free to carry other things, head lamps are a great addition or alternative to a night-time torch.

Walkie Talkies

They may only be standing 1 metre away from each other (hidden behind a tree), but all kids young and old LOVE walkie talkies. Although most have access to phones now, give a child a walkie talkie and that smart device is long forgotten.

Metal Detector

For the treasure-hunters amongst us, a metal detector is quite the novelty when it comes to unique camping gift ideas for kids. Not just for finding the odd gold treasure chest, it is fun to see what other metal objects are buried within the sand they play on.

GoPro

For the action-packed camping teen, a GoPro is a sure-fire winner of a gift. They will love recording their pursuits in the water and on the land and showing off their daredevils skills to anyone who cares to watch the footage back later.

Drone

There are a million different types of drones out there that are not super expensive and can easily be navigated by children. Older kids may also like the fancier type, with cameras able to record their campsite and surrounds from far above.

Underwater Camera

An underwater camera for kids is a wonderful gift for those days at the beach or swimming in the creeks; helping them to capture what they discover below the water’s surface, as well as on top!

Insect Collection Kits

Kids are curious creatures, and an insect collection box is the perfect way for them to study any little campground finds in more detail. A simple container with a magnifying glass included, they are a great way for kids to safely observe insects they may find before releasing them back to the wild.

Outdoor Nature Scavenger Hunt Cards

A great gift that encourages nature exploration and discovery, outdoor scavenger hunt card games get little ones racing to find a list of nature items in their own backyard.

Fossicking Tray

Kids will love unearthing a range of hidden treasures as they fossick in creeks and the ocean to collect on their tray.

Binoculars

What better way to encourage curiosity and exploration in nature for kids than with the gift of binoculars! Helping them to spot things they may not have been able to see otherwise, kids love to see what creatures they can spot in greater detail with a pair of these.

Bird ID Book

With over 850 bird species in Australia (45% of which are not found anywhere else in the world), a bird ID book is a great way to help kids identify and get excited about their local feathered friends.

Torch

A simple outdoor explorer tool to help them spot those nocturnal animals!

Telescope

If you are camping out in the middle of nowhere, chances are the sky at night will be lit up with a million stars. A small portable telescope will help your child see them even clearer.

Weather Predictor

Weather prediction kits come in a range of different styles. Simple to use and usually something that can sit on their bedside table, kids love waking up and getting an idea of the day’s weather – without even looking outside!

Compass

Perfect for kids and teens who like to get out and about in the great outdoors.

Camping Gift Ideas for Kids – Outdoor Play

Camping gift ideas for kids father daughter on kayak.

Kite

An old-fashioned toy that will just never get old. On any windy day, find an open space or head to the beach and watch as hours pass flying a kite together.

Frisbee

A frisbee is an easy and cheap gift that will keep the whole family entertained for hours while camping.

Totem Tennis / Soccer

This is a simple gift that just requires a quick stab in the ground before you have a game that can be played without sending balls flying across into other people’s tents. The best part is at the end of your trip you can simply lift it out of the ground, take it home, and set it up again in your own backyard.

Bike / Scooter

A must-have for any child who plans to join the local campground crew on their daily ritual of circling the tent site and waving to their parents each time they pass. With so many amazing bike paths to explore at camping hotspots around Australia, this is a wonderful gift.

Pool Inflatable

Most camp sites have pools, but even the ones that don’t are usually close to a creek or beach. They’re perfect for lazing on and enjoying a few restful hours in the water.

Junior Kayak

For any families that love their water sports and enjoy camping near rivers, lakes, creeks or oceans, a junior kayak for the kids will not go unused!

Beach Cricket Set

Combine their love of cricket with an ocean view. A beach cricket set will be something the whole family can enjoy together.

Body Board

A great gift for kids who love the ocean is a body board. Helping them gain confidence with the waves as they enjoy time at the beach with family makes this a win-win gift idea for nature-loving kids.

Beach Bucket and Spade

What kid doesn’t love building sandcastles on the beach and collect shells? A traditional bucket and spade beach kit is the perfect gift for a child who loves all things nature play.

Kids’ Snorkel Set

Set your kids up to discover all the wonderful sea life that lives just below the surface with a snorkel and flippers set!

Kids’ Fishing Rod

If your kid loves getting out in nature and camping, then chances are they may love to go fishing too. BCF sell some awesome kids fishing reels to get them started.

Camping Gift Ideas for Kids – Boredom Busters

Card Games

Card games are a necessity for families who camp often. Kids may pretend they would rather be out on their bike or exploring the bush, but when things quieten down at the end of the day or late at night after dinner, card games are an absolute blessing.

Travel Board Games

As with gard games, camping is the perfect opportunity to bring the family back to some old school family entertainment. You can even get a range of travel-sized board games (which kids love simply because all the pieces and characters are miniature).

Sketch Book

A wonderful gift idea for any little budding artist, being out in nature offers some pretty great inspiration.

Bluetooth Speaker

Something that a lot of camping families forget about and then later regret, a bluetooth speaker will allow you to escape or enjoy some background tunes while you camp.

Wireless Earphones

They will love you for this (and you will love yourself too!) as kids will be able to listen to music and maybe watch a movie during some down time without alerting the entire neighbouring campsite at the same time.

Nature Journal

Nature journals are a great way to encourage children to document and write about their experiences in nature.

Nature-themed Memory Card Games

Get kids memorising their favourite animals or plants and matching them up with their pair in these simple, but much-loved, card games.

Books About Nature and Camping

Whether it is a picture book or an encyclopedia of nature facts and camping skills, all kids love books!

Camping and Hiking at Boonoo Boonoo National Park https://brisbanekids.com.au/boonoo-boonoo-national-park/ https://brisbanekids.com.au/boonoo-boonoo-national-park/#respond Thu, 30 Nov 2023 20:39:44 +0000 https://brisbanekids.com.au/?p=345108 Nestled within the New England Tablelands, Boonoo Boonoo National Park in New South Wales beckons families to experience its pristine landscapes through bushwalking, camping, and picnic options. It’s only a short drive from the township of Tenterfield, just over the Queensland border, making it a perfect day trip when staying in the region. And here’s a quick tip from the Tenterfield locals: Boonoo Boonoo is an Aboriginal term and is actually pronounced “bunna bunnoo”.
A walking track leading into bushland is shown, with a sign on the right indicating the length of each bushwalk.

Bushwalking at Boonoo Boonoo National Park

Boonoo Boonoo National Park is a haven for families who love bushwalking and it offers tracks of varying degrees of difficulty. The Falls Lookout Walk is the easiest at just 400 metres return and is a must-do for all families.

The track weaves through lush rainforest, providing a cool and shaded path, culminating in a viewing platform over the breathtaking Boonoo Boonoo Falls and the valley below. This is where bush poet Banjo Patterson purportedly proposed to his sweetheart, and it’s easy to see why he chose this location.

Another excellent walk for families is the Rockpool Ramble, which is just 200 metres from the entry point. The walk follows a bitumen path to a large natural rock pool with smaller cascading pools and waterfalls.

Be sure to bring your swimmers and a towel for this one, especially in summer. Kids will also love the rock-hopping opportunities.

For those seeking a bit more adventure, the River Track (13km return), Mackays Walk (6.5km return) or the Cockatoo Walk (12km return) all offer a chance to explore the park’s diverse landscapes.

The River Track follows the Boonoo Boonoo River, traversing many bridges over gushing streams. This walk connects the main day-use area with the Cypress Pine Camping Area. Mackays Walk begins along the river track before entering tall eucalypt forest. And the Cockatoo Walk also follows the river track, before heading via Morgans Gully – a historic gold mining area.
A boy is rock hopping on the left hand side, with a waterway running through the middle of the rocks. A bottle brush plant in bloom is shown in the foreground.

Camping at Boonoo Boonoo National Park

For families wanting to stay a little longer at Boonoo Boonoo National Park, the Cypress Pine Campground provides a peaceful camping spot suited to tents and caravans, with the soothing sounds of the Boonoo Boonoo River nearby.

The campground offers basic facilities, including toilets, barbecues and picnic tables. However, it’s important to note that there are no showers, rubbish bins, electricity or drinking water available at this campsite.

If you don’t fancy roughing it but still want to stay within the national park, Robinsons Cabin is another option. Formerly an old forestry hut, this self-contained cabin can sleep up to six people. It offers power, flushing toilets, hot showers, and drinkable water.

To book a campsite or Robinsons cabin, visit the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service. Pets are not allowed, due to it being a national park. Even in summer, we recommend you pack some jumpers and warm gear, as the Tenterfield region can get really cold, especially at night.

A sheltered picnic area is shown in Boonoo Boonoo national park with a BBQ and picnic table.

Picnics and Barbecues at Boonoo Boonoo National Park

For families looking to enjoy a day trip, Boonoo Boonoo National Park provides picnic facilities at the Boonoo Boonoo Falls day-use area. Here you will find shaded picnic tables, barbeque facilities, and toilets, but you will need to take your rubbish with you. This is the closest access point to the lookout over the falls, the rockpools and the start of the river walks.

Another lovely picnic location is Morgans Gully. However, you will have to hike in to enjoy this natural sanctuary.

At both locations, keep an eye out for the diverse birdlife and native flora that call the park home, including some endangered species. If you’re lucky, you could see brush-tailed rock wallabies, spotted-tailed quolls, glossy-black cockatoos and the Cunningham’s skink.

A girl is rock hopping around rock pools at Boonoo Boonoo National Park.

Getting to Boonoo Boonoo National Park

To get to Boonoo Boonoo National Park, first drive to Tenterfield. From there, follow the sealed Mount Lindesay Highway and look for the Boonoo Boonoo turn-off on the right, which is signposted. There are about 13 kilometres of unsealed road to get to the Boonoo Boonoo camping and picnic areas. Although unsealed, the rest of the road is very well maintained and is suitable for 2WD, caravans and camper trailers. Even if you are only day-tripping, you must pay a park entry fee, so bring cash with you or purchase a park pass online at www.nationalparks.nsw.gov.au.

While you’re in the area, you may also like to visit Bald Rock National Park or explore the heritage town of Tenterfield.

Bald Rock National Park – Family camping, bush walking and picnics https://brisbanekids.com.au/bald-rock-national-park/ https://brisbanekids.com.au/bald-rock-national-park/#respond Thu, 30 Nov 2023 20:30:57 +0000 https://brisbanekids.com.au/?p=345070 For families seeking a nature-filled escape away from the hustle and bustle of city life, Bald Rock National Park in New South Wales stands as an idyllic destination. Located just over a three-hour scenic drive from Brisbane, this natural wonderland offers a perfect blend of bushwalking, camping, and picnic options for a family getaway.
Children walk through an arch made naturally by giant granite boulders.

Bald Rock National Park for families

Just over the Queensland border and into New South Wales lies the impressive Bald Rock National Park. The nearby township of Tenterfield is a great spot to stay if you want to make a weekend of it. There are plenty of family-friendly activities offered in and around Tenterfield, but no trip to the region is complete without a visit to Bald Rock National Park. You can check out our detailed itinerary for Tenterfield here
Children walk along a track in Bald Rock National Park with large granite boulders on either side and trees surrounding them.

Bushwalking bliss at Bald Rock National Park

Bald Rock National Park is renowned for its stunning landscapes and unique geological formations, with the highlight being the colossal Bald Rock itself. Measuring about 750 metres long and 500 metres wide, Bald Rock is the largest exposed granite monolith in Australia.

Families can embark on the Bald Rock Summit Walk, a moderately challenging trek that leads to the summit of this gigantic granite rock. From the picnic area, there are two marked walking tracks, a steep one up the exposed face or an easier gradient through bushland around the back. You can then choose from either a gentle or steep descent from the rock, depending on your children’s ages and abilities.

When taking the longer (and less steep) way up, there are balancing rock arches and formations that you wind your way through and the opportunity to spot the native flora and fauna that inhabit the area. Just be mindful of snakes!

The reward for your efforts is an awe-inspiring panoramic view of the surrounding granite-punctured countryside and the opportunity to stand atop the rock, which has an other-worldly feeling to it. Altogether, it’s a 2.7-kilometre walk, and you should allow approximately two hours (or more if you want to take lots of pictures at the top!).

There is also another bushwalking trail that leaves from the northern end of the picnic area, called the Border Walk. This 13 km return track takes you, as the name suggests, to the NSW/QLD border. It’s best to allow up to six hours for this pretty but more challenging walk through the woodlands.
The view from the top of Bald Rock looking out over countryside.

Camping under the stars at Bald Rock National Park

To truly immerse yourselves in the beauty of Bald Rock National Park, consider camping overnight. The Bald Rock Creek campground provides a serene setting nestled among eucalyptus trees. The campground is equipped with basic facilities such as toilets, barbecues and picnic tables. The sites are suitable for both tents and caravans and are in easy walking distance of the amenities. Water is available but must be treated before drinking. There is no power and all rubbish must be taken with you. As this is a national park, pets are not allowed.

Camping at Bald Rock National Park allows families to experience the magic of the park after sunset. The clear night skies reveal a breathtaking display of stars, making it a perfect opportunity for some stargazing with the family. Bring along a telescope or simply lay out a blanket and marvel at the celestial wonders above – an experience that city-dwelling families rarely get to enjoy. A word of advice – it can get very cold in winter, so pack accordingly!

To book your campsite, visit the New South Wales Parks and Wildlife Service website and secure your spot.

A termite mound is in the centre, surrounded by bushland

Picnic pleasures at Bald Rock National Park

For families looking to enjoy a day out without the overnight camping experience, the Bald Rock Creek day-use area provides shaded picnic tables, barbeque facilities, and toilets, all easily accessible from the carpark. Pack the picnic basket or throw some snags in the esky and enjoy a meal in the great outdoors. Just don’t let the ants (or kookaburras) run away with your feast! The nearby township of Tenterfield is the perfect location if you need to pick up any supplies. However, even if you are only visiting the national park as a day-tripper, you must pay a park entry fee, so bring cash with you or purchase a park pass online at www.nationalparks.nsw.gov.au.

While you’re picnicking under the leafy trees, download the SoundTrails App and click on the Bald Rock National Park sound trail. You’ll hear fascinating facts about your location. For example, did you know the expansive area was once a cattle property and was first gazetted as a national park in the 1970s?The view from the top of Bald Rock granite monolith.

Getting to Bald Rock National Park

To get there from Brisbane, first drive to Tenterfield, and then follow the sealed Mount Lindesay Highway, until you come to the turning on the left (signposted) that provides an access road to Bald Rock NP. If you are unsure, we recommend calling in to the visitor information centre in Tenterfield and picking up a local map. If you’d like to visit another stunning national park nearby, check out Boonoo Boonoo National Park.

Facilities at Borumba Deer Park

Just because you are camping doesn’t mean you have to miss out on some creature comforts to make your stay more comfortable. Facilities available at Borumba Deer Park include:

Kiosk

Kiosk at Borumba Deer Park.

A well-stocked kiosk is located at the entrance/check-in area of the park. This is also where the office is situated. Here you can purchase hot and cold drinks, firewood, ice, kitchen staples and Borumba Deer Park merchandise. You can even get your gas bottle refilled at the kiosk. Sports and water-based equipment and lawn games can also be hired from this location during opening hours.

Amenities

Amenities block at Borumba Deer Park.

There are two separate amenity blocks on site. One is located near the camp kitchen and laundromat, while the other is located in Sherwood Forest. Both lots of amenity blocks include flushing toilets and showers with hot and cold running water.

An accessible toilet/shower cubicle is available within these blocks and is also suitable for families showering more than one person at a time. The amenity block near the camp kitchen also has a screen door on it, which means younger children can be safely contained while in the toilets/showers.

A bank of portable toilets are located at The Meadows.

There are only a handful of showers and toilets in each block, so it can be very busy during peak times when the park is fully booked, so keep this in mind when visiting.

Camp Kitchen and Outdoor Entertainment Area

Inside the camp kitchen at Borumba Deer Park.

A large indoor camp kitchen is located at The Stockyard area and is free for all campers to use. Sinks, toasters, kettles, a fridge and other kitchen facilities are available within the kitchen, with free gas BBQ’s located outdoors in the adjacent Stockyard area (which is undercover). Sinks can also be found in this area. Additional BBQ’s are dotted throughout the park.

The Stockyard is undercover and is popular on rainy days and a great communal area to come together to eat, with plenty of picnic tables available. This area also contains a small stage and is utilised for special events and activities.

Laundromat

For a small fee you can take advantage of the bank of washers and dryers in the laundromat which is open 24/7. This is particularly useful for longer stays or if you have lots of dirty clothes and want to reduce the contents of your washing basket when you return home. There is also a folding bench and sink. The laundromat is located in the same block as the amenities, near the playground.

Caravan Dump Point

A handy caravan dump point and rinse bay is located at the back of the amenity block near The Stockyard.

Campfires

Sitting around a campfire is one of the best parts of any camping trip, especially when marshmallows are involved. Smalls campfires are permitted (subject to local fire bans) using the fire ring provided. Guests are also permitted to bring their own, which is highly recommended during busy times. You can supply your own firewood or purchase bags of wood from the kiosk.

Activity Hire

A range of sporting and water-based equipment can be hired (for a fee) from the kiosk. Items include mini golf equipment, large lawn games, cornhole, water tubes, floating mats and life vests.

Rubbish Bins

Large industrial rubbish bins are located near the kiosk for general rubbish. Broken camping equipment is not permitted in these bins. There are also separate bins provided for recyclables.

Animals at Borumba Deer Park

As the name suggests there are deer a-plenty at Borumba Deer Park. While many of the deer have been hand-raised, there is also a sizeable portion of wild deer too. If you are lucky you may even get to spot a baby deer frolicking in the paddocks.  The deer, including red deer and chital deer are fenced in a number of paddocks with tall, wire fences.  Guests are welcome to pat and feed the friendly animals through the fence (animal food can be purchased from the kiosk.)

Other animals you can see in the paddocks include goats, donkeys, pigs, geese, chickens and peacock.

Activities at Borumba Deer Park

There is no shortage of fun activities at Borumba Deer Park.  While some activities do require a small payment, many are free for guests to enjoy.

Animal Feeding

A brown and white goat with hay in its mouth at Borumba Deer Park.

Every morning around 8.15am one of the staff members from the park will feed the animals. As you enter the park keep an eye out on your left for the ‘Animal Feeding’ sign, where you will meet to see the goats, deer, pigs and donkeys fill their tummies. You can even help feed the animals with the food provided. Outside of feeding times you are welcome to purchase a container of animal food from the kiosk for the animals to snack on.

Mini-Golf

Outdoor mini golf at Borumba Deer Park.

Keen golfers can practice their putting at the small mini-golf course which is located next to the main playground. Guests can hire clubs and balls from the kiosk for a small fee.

Playgrounds

Wooden playground with plastic blue slide at Borumba Deer Park.

There are two playgrounds at Borumba Deer Park for the kids to enjoy. The main playground is located next to The Stockyard with plenty of opportunities for climbing, swinging and sliding. A bike track also encircles this area, and it is rather hilly and dusty, so take care when navigating this play area.

The second playground, which is smaller and is more suited to younger children, is located in Sherwood Forest near the amenities block and contains a small fort structure with a slide.

Bike Track

Bring your own bike (and helmet) and pedal your way up, over and around the dirt BMX track which weaves its way around the playground. Of course, you don’t have to stop there, using your bike to explore the rest of the park is a great way to get around.

Water-Based Activities

Boy on a rope swing swinging over a creek at Borumba Deer Park.

With the campgrounds being conveniently situated on the banks of Yabba Creek there is always the opportunity for water-based activities. Fishing, swimming, kayaking, paddling in the creek, or just floating about can help you while away the hours. You may even be able to find a rope swing overhanging the creek. If you are up early and are very quiet, you may be able to spot the elusive platypus lolling in the creek.

Bushwalking

Take a leisurely stroll around the park or venture further afield on one of the many bushwalking tracks which take you through the picturesque and tranquil bushland surrounding Borumba Deer Park.

Day Visitors

Day visitors are permitted at the park (for a fee) between the hours of 8am – 4pm. There is a designated ‘day use area’ for water sports and swimming, which campers may also use, though no camping is permitted in this area. All day visitors must sign in at the kiosk prior to entering the park.

Making the Most of Your Stay at Borumba Deer Park

A deer with antlers sitting in a field at Borumba Deer Park.

To make the most of your camping adventures at Borumba Deer Park we recommend to:

  • Partake in the animal feeding at least once during your stay.
  • Bring your camera – photographing the deer with their majestic antlers is truly amazing and very ‘Insta-worthy.’
  • Time your visits to the shower block, especially when visiting during peak times.
  • Bring the bikes – it is a great way to tire out the kids and get around the expansive campgrounds.
  • Walk along the creek to discover the rope swings (be careful not to fall in!)

Nearby Areas to Explore

If you are looking to venture outside the campgrounds to sightsee you won’t be disappointed.

Blue skies at Borumba Dam.

Borumba Dam, also known as Lake Borumba.

Many flock to the area, particularly in the warmer months, to take advantage of Lake Borumba (Borumba Dam). Less than 5km from the campgrounds the Dam is popular for boating, fishing and other water sports. With multiple picnic areas, BBQ’s and toilet facilities, heading to the dam for some fun in the sun is high on the list of many visiting families.

Visit the small, rural town of Imbil which is just 5-10 minutes down the road. Here you can find the local pub, cafés’, a bakery and often a small local market. A small supermarket and petrol station are also located in this town.  Don’t forget to check out the history of Imbil and stop off at the lookout which offers stunning views over the surrounding area.

Featuring rainforest, pine plantations and dry forests, nearby Amamoor State Forest is frequented by many visitors who are seeking wildlife. Bird watchers, platypus seekers and bush walkers visit to experience the stunning natural surroundings with the hope of spotting a rare species of bird, frogs or wildlife.

What We Love About Borumba Deer Park

Several deer in long grass at Borumba Deer Park.

When our family of four camped at Borumba Deer Park, we enjoyed the quite rural setting, not far from Brisbane.

By far the highlight of our stay was the animals. The kids thoroughly enjoyed the morning feeding time where all the animals flock to the fence line for some tucker. At other times the children would happily watch the animal antics, particular that of the playful kids (goats) butting heads or the cheeky donkey siblings chasing each other.

The rope swing by the creek was also a source of much enjoyment, for the kids (and the kids at heart).

There was plenty to see and do in and close by to the campgrounds, or you could just relax by the campfire and watch the flames flicker. Either way, camping at Borumba Deer Park is a wonderful, family-friendly camping experience which can be enjoyed at any time of the year.

Getting to Borumba Deer Park

Borumba Deer Park is located approximately 170km north of Brisbane, inland from the Sunshine Coast.

If you are coming from Brisbane, just follow the Bruce Highway/M1 north, leaving the highway at Exit 244. Follow the signs to Lake Borumba/Imbil, driving through the town of Imbil. After crossing five bridges, you will then find Borumba Deer Park on your left (it is well signed so you shouldn’t miss it!)

Borumba Deer Park is located at 1133 Yabba Creek Road, Imbil.

At this program, your kids will get hands-on experience operating a mini excavator, digging and moving dirt and rocks. Experienced instructors will teach them the basics of excavation and safety, making sure that everyone has a great time while staying safe. Plus, at the completion of each challenge, your kids will receive their induction card, meaning they have been fully inducted into the worksite!

The program offers four exciting zones for your kids to explore:

  • The Dig Zone: where they will get trained on a 1.7 tonne excavator, digging in the earth.
  • The Demolition Zone: the challenge is to use the wrecking ball to knock over the towers with a BANG.
  • The Croc Zone: on a 1.7 tonne excavator, using precision, they’ll try to hook a croc!
  • The RC Zone: using state-of-the-art remote control machines like dozers, dump trucks, excavators, and rear loaders, your kids will get to use machines just like on a work site.

Thunderegg Mining at Thunderbird Park

child sitting in dirt holding small thunderegg with pick in background

With a certified mine on the Thunderbird Park site, Minecraft enthusiasts (and the rest of the family) will love fossicking for their very own thundereggs! Created by bubbles in prehistoric volcanic lava that has solidified into rock form, thundereggs can range from the size of a pea to the size of a boulder. These ‘eggs’, when cracked in half, can display a variety of colours and crystal formations that are completely unique in every egg.

After a quick information session about safety and what to look for, you are given a bucket which you can fill to the brim (remember, whatever you find you also need to carry down and out of the mine). Sensible, closed-in shoes are a necessity for this activity, as it is a bit of a hike up to the mine from the mine shed and real tools are provided for you to use. Gloves are also highly recommended.

Once you have filled your buckets, you head back down to the gem shop where staff will advise you on which rocks to have cut and in which direction the cut should go. Cutting prices are based on size and are listed at the shop. You can choose to take all your finds home or leave them at the shop if you are just too tired to carry any more. The gem shop also sells a range of cut rocks and gems.

TreeTop Challenge and TreeTop Challenge – Juniors

For those aged seven years and over, the TreeTop Challenge at Thunderbird Park is a unique way to experience the natural beauty of Mount Tamborine. Through a series of platforms, flying foxes, rope bridges and more, the challenge could easily provide an entire day’s worth of entertainment for families.

For kids aged 3-7 years, the TreeTop Challenge – Juniors is a fantastic alternative. First building confidence on the two lower-to-the-ground courses (under full supervision from the instructors), smaller kids can try out a ropes course of the very own. The lower courses lead on to two higher courses where kids can challenge themselves one the net bridges, wobbly logs and more. Sessions are limited to two hours in length.

The Canyon Flyer

Think the TreeTop Challenge is pushing your limits? You’ve not seen the Canyon Flyer! Hook up to this high-speed zipline that reaches speeds of up to 70km per hour and takes you gliding high above the treetops some 7om above the ground. With 7 ziplines totaling a length of 1.4km to try out, this is not for the faint-hearted.

Please note that, for safety, this experience is only open to those weighing over 40kg and under 120kg. Harnesses have a maximum diameter of 120cm.

Adventure Mini Golf

Providing a golfing experience designed for all levels of skill, the Adventure Mini Golf course features three holes per green, each of varying difficulty. New golfers can choose to putt the ‘Beginners’ holes, those with some experience the ‘Intermediate’ holes and the pros can do the ‘Professional’ holes. This means the whole family can enjoy the same course and be challenged at the same time.

The course itself is beautifully landscaped, making the most of the natural setting of Thunderbird Park. Rock traps, bridges, water hazards and more make this a great outdoor experience for families.

Laser Skirmish

The outdoor adventures continue, with Laser Skirmish at Thunderbird Park. Hiding behind trees and natural rock formations of the tropical ‘jungle’, players can join this simulated battle at the only outdoor laser skirmish location in the Gold Coast Hinterland.

Fairytale Farmers

Fairytale Farmers Pony Rides Thunderbird Park.

The residents of Thunderbird Park have recently become more diverse, with the addition of Fairytale Farmers’ ponies, located by the lake on the property. Kids can meet the colourful characters (admire Romeo the Pony’s fantastic fringe!) and go on a pony ride* around the lake. Fairytale Farmers adds animal adventures to the full outdoor experience that Thunderbird Park has developed and is such a fantastic escape from city life. *NOTE: Fairytale Farmers are only on the Thunderbird Park property during Queensland school holidays.

FunFair

4WD buggy with pedal karts in foreground

Another recent addition to Thunderbird Park, the FunFair provides hours of enjoyment for families. Choose from water bikes and paddle boats to cruise around the lake on, race your mates on the pedal go-karts, or bounce the day away on the jumping castle – it’s the perfect way to spend a morning or afternoon.

For the adrenaline junkies who want to kick it up a notch, why not go on a 4WD buggy ride adventure? Families of all ages can enjoy these buggy rides, with different options for the type of experience you are after—fast or slow, hill climbs and splashy water crossings, or just cruising around the property—it is a lot of fun and a great way to see a side of Thunderbird Park that you do not always get to see!

Other activities to enjoy at Thunderbird Park

Farm Stays near Brisbane | Recommended https://brisbanekids.com.au/farm-stays-near-brisbane-recommended/ https://brisbanekids.com.au/farm-stays-near-brisbane-recommended/#comments Wed, 15 Feb 2023 19:30:29 +0000 http://brisbanekids.com.au/?p=316026 Farm Stays near Brisbane

Farm stays are becoming increasingly popular as an ideal getaway for Brisbane families who want to get out of the city and show their Brisbane Kids what rural life is all about. We wanted to make sure we got a good range of places, with some real reviews, so we asked Brisbane parents on the Brisbane Facebook Page what they thought…

This is list is not exhaustive and we will add to it as we receive more information. Our advice is to ask lots of questions when you are trying to find the right farm stay for you.

  • Look for testimonials on their website
  • Head to their gallery (if they have one) so you can see pictures of what to expect, or head to their social media to do the same
  • Ask what activities are included in the price
  • Find out if meals are included
  • Ask about the best time of year for baby animals
  • Enquire about things to do near the farm stay in the event that it rains or you want a change of pace
  • Find out how long it will take to get there

Please add any recommendations you have to the comments field under this article.
