Maroochydore Rotary Park, Maroochydore

This beautiful park is right on the edge of the lovely Maroochydore River, with its sandy banks leading to calm waters, perfect for a splash about.

This is like a trip to the beach with all the fun of a playground to boot. The lovely sand base and great wooden ship structure will inspire great pirate adventures. There are not one, but two playgrounds, with equipment to keep all ages happy, including fort structures, rockers, monkey bars, a Liberty swing and more.

There is also a dry creek bed and stepping stones for great nature play, plus a small jetty for a spot of fishing.

This revamped park has a great fort structure, a climbing net, a balance ring, swings, and rockers. But the main highlight is the awesome giant Snakes and Ladders game, where kids themselves are the playing pieces! Just spin the wheel and see who makes it to the end first!

This Sunshine Coast playground goes beyond dinosaur themed and instead made the dinosaur the actual play equipment!

Kids can climb up through the mouth of the dinosaur and along its netting-covered body, eventually exiting down the tail which is a tunnel slide! Sand-based with fossil eggs and a fossil digging site, this playground is for all dinosaur lovers!

Fig Tree Park, Nirimba

Fig Tree Park Aura metal tunnel slide

Another Aura masterpiece. Big thumbs up for the design but also for facilities that are often lacking in suburban parks.

Our kids loved the entire space from the look of the play equipment to the functionalist which included lots of extreme climbing and a wonderful tunnel slide to reward all the effort of climbing. Other features enjoyed included the oversized flying fox and the hill slide.

50 Camping Gift Ideas for Kids https://brisbanekids.com.au/50-camping-gift-ideas-for-kids/ https://brisbanekids.com.au/50-camping-gift-ideas-for-kids/#respond Fri, 10 May 2024 01:56:54 +0000 https://brisbanekids.com.au/?p=344412 If your family loves the great outdoors and you are looking some great camping gifts for your kids, then look no further. From the obvious to the unique, we have researched far and wide to put together this list of some of the best camping gift ideas for kids that we could find.

Camping Gift Ideas for Kids – Camping Gear

Camping gift ideas for kids camping gear.

Backpack

All kids will delight in having their own camping backpack. Its a great idea for parents too, as the kids can fill it with their own toys and entertainment items to keep in the car for them for long drives, delve into while they wait for the campsite to be set up, or pack and take out on a day trip with the family.

Sleeping Bag

A super light-weight but warm sleeping bag is a great camping gift idea for kids who love to camp. Depending on their age and interests, there are a range of fun and themed bags you can buy for them.

Swag

For slightly older kids who love to have their own independence when camping, getting them their own swag is a great gift idea.

Lantern

Sure, they can get a torch, but kids love to carry around and old-fashioned style lantern when they are camping. Of course, opt for batteries instead of a flame though! Laterns are also a lot easier to set up beside their bed at night.

Toiletry Set

One thing kids will use every day when camping (at least, you hope!) is a toiletry set. Buying them their own toiletry bag (preferably one that is waterproof and unfolds to hang on the back of a shower door), complete with mini shampoo / conditioner and body wash, will make them excited to get clean at the end of a big day outdoors.

Camping Chair

Their very own camping chair is an awesome gift. There are many super cute toddler options out there, or you could opt for a fancy one that reclines and comes with its own drink holder too!

A Spork

Show me a camper who doesn’t love a spork! For those who aren’t in the know, these cleverly designed camping utensils are a combination fork, spoon and knife. You can even get them personalised!

Hammock

There are many different-sized (and shaped) hammocks that are a perfect camping accessory for kids. Strung between two trees, it will become the favoured resting spot for anyone who has one.

Oodie

For those colder camping nights, an Oodie (or onesie) has become the must-have campsite attire. Pretty much what your child will live in once they have one, there are a million styles now to choose from too.

Raincoat

We all hope that only blue skies will be visible when a camping trip is looming however, more often than not, a shower will fall while you’re away. As parents, we dread this, but kids actually love a good downfall and will be the first ones out there in their raincoat splashing in puddles.

Thongs

Yep, you will definitely need some thongs if you are going to be camping. Super easy and quick to get on and off, they will become the go-to footwear for the kids when you are camping – especially when heading for a shower.

Aqua Shoes

If you are camping near rock pools or creeks, a pair of aqua shoes will come in super handy for protecting little feet from getting some sharp cuts.

Gumboots

The perfect accessory for any child who plans to jump in a lot of outdoor puddles, or even if the area you are camping in is quite muddy. A pair of sparkling gumboots are super practical, but will have them looking the part too!

Hiking Boots

For kids that love to go hiking, a pair of special hiking boots is most practical and perfect gift you can get them.

Crocs

Yes, I went there. Love them or hate them, Crocs are actually a very sensible footwear idea for kids who go camping a lot. They are weatherproof, hardy, and (for some at least) are a fashion statement.

Camping Gift Ideas for Kids – Exploration Tools

Camping gift ideas for kids child exploring with walkie talkie.

Water Bottle

Not just any old water bottle though – a special camping one. Some camp drink bottles also come with a hook that you can attach to their backpack or a chair.

Head Lamp

Yep, kids love a good head lamp. Perfect for when they want to keep their hands free to carry other things, head lamps are a great addition or alternative to a night-time torch.

Walkie Talkies

They may only be standing 1 metre away from each other (hidden behind a tree), but all kids young and old LOVE walkie talkies. Although most have access to phones now, give a child a walkie talkie and that smart device is long forgotten.

Metal Detector

For the treasure-hunters amongst us, a metal detector is quite the novelty when it comes to unique camping gift ideas for kids. Not just for finding the odd gold treasure chest, it is fun to see what other metal objects are buried within the sand they play on.

GoPro

For the action-packed camping teen, a GoPro is a sure-fire winner of a gift. They will love recording their pursuits in the water and on the land and showing off their daredevils skills to anyone who cares to watch the footage back later.

Drone

There are a million different types of drones out there that are not super expensive and can easily be navigated by children. Older kids may also like the fancier type, with cameras able to record their campsite and surrounds from far above.

Underwater Camera

An underwater camera for kids is a wonderful gift for those days at the beach or swimming in the creeks; helping them to capture what they discover below the water’s surface, as well as on top!

Insect Collection Kits

Kids are curious creatures, and an insect collection box is the perfect way for them to study any little campground finds in more detail. A simple container with a magnifying glass included, they are a great way for kids to safely observe insects they may find before releasing them back to the wild.

Outdoor Nature Scavenger Hunt Cards

A great gift that encourages nature exploration and discovery, outdoor scavenger hunt card games get little ones racing to find a list of nature items in their own backyard.

Fossicking Tray

Kids will love unearthing a range of hidden treasures as they fossick in creeks and the ocean to collect on their tray.

Binoculars

What better way to encourage curiosity and exploration in nature for kids than with the gift of binoculars! Helping them to spot things they may not have been able to see otherwise, kids love to see what creatures they can spot in greater detail with a pair of these.

Bird ID Book

With over 850 bird species in Australia (45% of which are not found anywhere else in the world), a bird ID book is a great way to help kids identify and get excited about their local feathered friends.

Torch

A simple outdoor explorer tool to help them spot those nocturnal animals!

Telescope

If you are camping out in the middle of nowhere, chances are the sky at night will be lit up with a million stars. A small portable telescope will help your child see them even clearer.

Weather Predictor

Weather prediction kits come in a range of different styles. Simple to use and usually something that can sit on their bedside table, kids love waking up and getting an idea of the day’s weather – without even looking outside!

Compass

Perfect for kids and teens who like to get out and about in the great outdoors.

Camping Gift Ideas for Kids – Outdoor Play

Camping gift ideas for kids father daughter on kayak.

Kite

An old-fashioned toy that will just never get old. On any windy day, find an open space or head to the beach and watch as hours pass flying a kite together.

Frisbee

A frisbee is an easy and cheap gift that will keep the whole family entertained for hours while camping.

Totem Tennis / Soccer

This is a simple gift that just requires a quick stab in the ground before you have a game that can be played without sending balls flying across into other people’s tents. The best part is at the end of your trip you can simply lift it out of the ground, take it home, and set it up again in your own backyard.

Bike / Scooter

A must-have for any child who plans to join the local campground crew on their daily ritual of circling the tent site and waving to their parents each time they pass. With so many amazing bike paths to explore at camping hotspots around Australia, this is a wonderful gift.

Pool Inflatable

Most camp sites have pools, but even the ones that don’t are usually close to a creek or beach. They’re perfect for lazing on and enjoying a few restful hours in the water.

Junior Kayak

For any families that love their water sports and enjoy camping near rivers, lakes, creeks or oceans, a junior kayak for the kids will not go unused!

Beach Cricket Set

Combine their love of cricket with an ocean view. A beach cricket set will be something the whole family can enjoy together.

Body Board

A great gift for kids who love the ocean is a body board. Helping them gain confidence with the waves as they enjoy time at the beach with family makes this a win-win gift idea for nature-loving kids.

Beach Bucket and Spade

What kid doesn’t love building sandcastles on the beach and collect shells? A traditional bucket and spade beach kit is the perfect gift for a child who loves all things nature play.

Kids’ Snorkel Set

Set your kids up to discover all the wonderful sea life that lives just below the surface with a snorkel and flippers set!

Kids’ Fishing Rod

If your kid loves getting out in nature and camping, then chances are they may love to go fishing too. BCF sell some awesome kids fishing reels to get them started.

Camping Gift Ideas for Kids – Boredom Busters

Camping gift ideas for kids boy sitting under tree journaling.

Card Games

Card games are a necessity for families who camp often. Kids may pretend they would rather be out on their bike or exploring the bush, but when things quieten down at the end of the day or late at night after dinner, card games are an absolute blessing.

Travel Board Games

As with gard games, camping is the perfect opportunity to bring the family back to some old school family entertainment. You can even get a range of travel-sized board games (which kids love simply because all the pieces and characters are miniature).

Sketch Book

A wonderful gift idea for any little budding artist, being out in nature offers some pretty great inspiration.

Bluetooth Speaker

Something that a lot of camping families forget about and then later regret, a bluetooth speaker will allow you to escape or enjoy some background tunes while you camp.

Wireless Earphones

They will love you for this (and you will love yourself too!) as kids will be able to listen to music and maybe watch a movie during some down time without alerting the entire neighbouring campsite at the same time.

Nature Journal

Nature journals are a great way to encourage children to document and write about their experiences in nature.

Nature-themed Memory Card Games

Get kids memorising their favourite animals or plants and matching them up with their pair in these simple, but much-loved, card games.

Books About Nature and Camping

Whether it is a picture book or an encyclopedia of nature facts and camping skills, all kids love books!

Is Brisbane Safe? https://brisbanekids.com.au/is-brisbane-safe/ https://brisbanekids.com.au/is-brisbane-safe/#respond Wed, 14 Feb 2024 02:02:37 +0000 https://brisbanekids.com.au/?p=349471 When travelling to any new destination one thing that is usually questioned is just how safe it is. Are there certain things you need to know before travelling there and what safety precautions may be smart to take.  If you are planning a trip to Brisbane you may be wondering the same thing. Is Brisbane safe? We have done the research and have detailed below everything you need to know about just how safe Brisbane is to visit.

How safe is Brisbane for travel

family exploring the city of brisbane

Brisbane is known for its friendly people, incredible wildlife and stunning natural landscapes, but is it safe to travel to?

The best way to get your answer from an international point of view is to check out your destinations current standing on reporting websites such as Travel Safe – Abroad.  We know that in comparison to most places you will travel to, Brisbane is a very safe spot to visit, but don’t just take our word for it.  We looked up the current recommendations on our city and this is what we have found.

Brisbane’s Safety Rating

Currently, website Travel Safe – Abroad has given Brisbane a safety index of 90, with the overall risk level listed as low. As a whole, it has listed our city as low risk when it comes to transport, pickpockets, mugging, scams, and as a woman traveller. Compared to our other capital cities, Brisbane has been given the highest safety rating, tying only with Hobart, with the website stating that “this is a safe destination for you as a tourist from almost all perspectives.”

Is Brisbane safe to travel to alone?

Queensland’s capital is considered safe for solo travellers, men or women, with Australia earning a rating of 24 on the Bounce Women Travel Safety Index. Overall, you shouldn’t feel unsafe walking and exploring Brisbane City, whether traveling alone, with friends, or with family. Even so, it is always advisable for any solo traveller in any foreign city to avoid isolated areas where possible and have heightened awareness when out at night.

Is it safe to travel on Brisbane’s public transport network?

Public transport in Brisbane is considered a very effective and safe way to travel.  Security and safety measures are everywhere, including security cameras, help phones, and safety officers who patrol 24 hours a day.

Various staff ensure passenger safety across the network, including:

  • Busway safety officers who patrol busways 24 hours a day, seven days a week
  • Guards patrolling designated train services and train carriages (check your train timetable for guardian train information)
  • Accessible staff on all CityCats and ferries
  • Customer service staff on some buses, trams and at tram stations during the day and weekend night trams.

Public Safety Help Points

map of safety points in brisbane

Public safety help points are located at a number of sites across Brisbane and can be used by the public in case of a medical or safety emergency or when assistance is required. These help points are security monitored 24/7. You can find a full list of locations and more information here.

Tips for Staying Safe in Brisbane

Although it is clear that Brisbane is one of the safer places to visit as a tourist, like all cities we still advise you to take caution and be smart when travelling to a new place. Below are some general safety tips that we would recommend if you are travelling to Brisbane:

  • Always have a mobile phone that you can use in case of emergency.
  • Make sure that you have a list of the local emergency phone numbers on you.
  • Being so close to many beaches, this is a popular day trip for visitors to the city. We recommend that you stay where lifeguards are present and stay up to date with the current weather and surf conditions before entering the water. Always swim between the flags. If you aren’t swimming between the flags and you get into trouble, there may not be anyone to help you.
  • The police in Brisbane are very helpful and friendly so don’t be afraid to approach a police officer when out and ask for help if you need it.
  • Brisbane experiences extremely warm days in Summer so please take caution and prepare with plenty of cold water, sunscreen, and protective clothing if you are planning to hike or spend a long time outdoors.
  • If you need to travel on public transport at night, it’s recommended to plan your journey ahead of time and ensure you are in an area full of people.
  • We always recommend travelling with a simple first aid kit and up-to-date travel insurance.

Important Safety Numbers to know in Brisbane

Image of a Queensland emergency services fire truck.

As with travel to any foreign city, it is important that you equip yourself with a list of the local emergency contacts to save time if you think you need them.

  • Police, fire, and ambulance: 000 (also called Triple Zero)
  • Brisbane City Council: 07 3403 8888
  • State Emergency Services: 132 500
  • Policelink: 131 444 is the number in Queensland to report non-urgent crime or incidents

You can find a more detailed list of emergency contact numbers for Brisbane here. It’s also good to know your embassy’s number when in Brisbane. In case of passport loss or theft, you must have it reissued urgently.

Things To Do In Mount Tamborine

Tamborine Rainforest Skywalk

333 Geissmann Dr, Tamborine Mountain QLD 4272

Tamborine Rainforest Skywalk steel bridge

Suspended high amongst the trees in Mount Tamborine, the Tamborine Rainforest Skywalk leads visitors on a stroll through the rainforest canopy via steel bridges and along a dirt walking track out to a lovely series of Cedar Creek cascades. Close to the end of the trail, a 40m cantilever bridge hovers dramatically some 30m above the creek and rainforest below.

Throughout the walk, informative signage points out the sights and the incredible rainforest flora. To add to the experience, the Rainforest Eco Gallery at the beginning and end of the circuit features displays offering further information about the local rainforest animals, birds and reptiles that populate the area. There is also a gift and souvenir shop that features Australiana themed gifts, books and more.

The 1.5km circuit takes about 45 minutes to complete at a leisurely pace and is accessible by bigger-wheeled prams (although there are a few stairs along the way you will need to navigate). The first section of Skywalk is wheelchair-accessible.

TIP: Are you afraid of heights?? While the walking bridge section of the Tamborine Rainforest Skywalk does sway slightly, there are plenty of railings to grip tightly. The cantilever viewing platform has a lot more movement, so fair warning to those not so confident with heights!

TreeTop Challenge at Thunderbird Park

Thunderbird Park, 639 Tamborine Mountain Rd (Cnr Cedar Creek Falls Rd & Tamborine Mountain Rd), Tamborine Mountain QLD 4272

Entrance to the TreeTop Challenge at Thunderbird Park Mount Tamborine

For those aged seven years and over, the TreeTop Challenge at Thunderbird Park is a unique way to experience the natural beauty of  Mount Tamborine. Through a series of platforms, flying foxes, rope bridges and more, the challenge could easily provide an entire day’s worth of entertainment for families.

All participants take part in a safety instruction session before beginning any of the courses. The session includes a demonstration of the types of attachments they will have to negotiate with their hooks and harnesses along the way, how to negotiate the different types of challenges safely and some hands-on practice trying the various attachments for themselves.

The beginning of the course is the real ‘make or break’ point, featuring a high climb to a timber platform, followed by a thrilling flying fox soar through the trees—if you can get past your fears at this point, then you’ll be set for the rest of the course! From there, the differing levels of courses (each designed for varying experience and comfort levels) take participants through multiple high wire challenges including timber climbing platforms and ladders, wobbly bridges, additional flying foxes, rope nets and more. It’s an adrenaline-packed activity that gives a fantastic sense of achievement when completed and something to challenge the confidence of all family members.

Minimum height is 160cm to the middle of the palm with the palms stretched vertically above the head and feet flat on the floor. Weight is to be no more than 120kg. The harness diameter is 110cm.

TIP: The harnesses also feature a pouch to hold a water bottle, so the kids will seldom have to come down! Booking is a must.

Tamborine Mountain Glow Worm Caves

Cedar Creek Estate, 104-144 Hartley Rd, Tamborine Mountain QLD 4272

Tamborine Mountain Glow Worm Caves lights on glow worms in caves

Aiming to conserve the precious glow worm colonies of the east coast of Australia and parts of New Zealand, the purpose-built Tamborine Mountain Glow Worm Caves is a unique experience. Located on what was an old dairy farm, the area surrounding the caves has been re-vegetated to make the most of the trickling Cedar Creek running through the property, creating a lush rainforest section that now sees many species of wildlife pass through daily.

A visit to the Glow Worm Caves begins with a stroll over the creek and through the rainforest. Visitors are introduced to the history of the area and a bit of background knowledge regarding glow worms. The tour then enters the first part of the cave, where participants’ eyes have a chance to adjust to the darkness and an informative video explains the fascinating ecology of the glow worm.

Wandering into the glow worm habitat itself, one could easily be excused for believing they were seeing strings of fairy lights hanging from the cave walls. It takes a few seconds to realise that these glowing lights are the infamous glow worms with their bright bottoms twinkling in the dark. The tour guide’s narration is a big part of the experience, and the details learnt about the feeding, growth and reproductive cycle of these tiny creatures while gazing at them in wonder makes this for an engaging, educational experience.

The glow-worm cave tour takes around 30 minutes. It’s a peaceful setting and, once outside the caves, visitors are welcome to stroll across to the frog habitat, browse the Cedar Creek Estate winery’s cellar door selection and art gallery, or just sit in the gardens soaking up the sunshine.

TIP: No photos can be taken inside the cave for risk of disturbing the sensitive glow worms, however, the gift shop on site has lots of postcards, books and other merchandise to browse and buy.
