It’s easy to see why this Gold Coast playground is such a popular destination for families! Kurrawa All Abilities Playground at Broadbeach offers hours of fun for children of all ages and abilities in a fully fenced, well-shaded play space. It’s located next to Kurrawa Surf Club (and the beach!) in Broadbeach (approx. 1 hour south of Brisbane).
Kurrawa All Abilities Playground
The Gold Coast City Council co-designed this amazing all abilities playground with Disability Services Queensland and the results are incredible. Parents will appreciate the playground is fully fenced with pool style fencing with a gate opening inaccessible to children. This playground has opportunities for everyone to get involved and it designed to that all children, of all abilities, can play alongside each other!
There are 3 main play zones – The hill, the sandcastle and the submarine – with a range of flat and wide concrete paths and fun play equipment between them.
The hill area features a climbing net, large slides built into hills and climbing walls with swings conveniently and centrally located at the bottom. This section is covered by large colourful shade sails.
If your kids prefer sand play or imaginative role play, perhaps they’ll race straight to the sandcastle zone, where there are 2 sandpits and 3 sand tables (at wheelchair hight) and a ramp that leads up to the sandcastle turret. There are water jets for sand shaping and once again, the addition of shade sails to keep the kids cool on Queensland summer days.
This section also features talking tubes which are always a lot of fun for kids. What we love about this space is all the different colourful sculptures that have been placed throughout the area like a giant shell with a hermit crab inside and the seats shaped like beach balls. It is these little additions that really make this all-abilities playground unique and inviting for children.
The undersea zone features an impressive yellow submarine also offering various sea creature sculptures and mounds of seagrass. The submarine is completely accessible with wide-open windows with so much wonderful potential for group play. The submarine controls are set at wheelchair height.
Your kids will especially enjoy the (accessible) sway bridge that wobbles with a strategically placed toadstool in the centre to hang onto. There is also a liberty swing (see details below regarding access). This wonderful play space also has flying foxes, sound and sight periscopes, bucket spinners, basket swings, sculptures and other fun elements to discover and explore!
Imagination factor
Kurrawa Playground really is a paradise for the imagination and a fun non-beach thing to do with kids at the Gold Coast. With so much attention to detail in the playground design, your underwater explorers will love the yellow submarine purposefully set below ground level to create the impression that it is sitting in the ocean. Accessible to all friends and kids of all ages, this is one of the standout play features of this epic Gold Coast playground.
Accessibility
This playground was specifically designed in conjunction with Disability Services Queensland to allow all children to have fun together! The playground elements are designed to be accessible to those with mobility issues or in a wheelchair. Each section of the playground is connected by wide pathways. It is clear from the moment you arrive, that the accessibility is part of the genuine design rather than the typical add on you might be accustomed to. As seasoned playground reviewers, this is definitely a benchmark playground, both unique and masterful in many ways.
The accessible toilets include a accessible change area with adult-sized (adjustable) change area bench and hoist. While anyone can access the generally accessible toilets, access to the change area including bench and hoist is made via a Master Locksmith Access Key. This is the same key that will give access to the liberty swing.
