If you are on the Gold Coast and looking for a seaside playground, below are our picks of the best ones you can find in the area.

Palm Beach Parklands

A large pirate ship in the playground at Palm Beach Parklands on the Gold Coast

When listing the best seaside playgrounds on the Gold Coast, there is one that locals nearly always have at the top of their list. Rightfully placed, Palm Beach Parklands (Pirate Park) is a treasure trove of fun, adventure and imaginative play for kids. If its recently upgraded pirate-themed playground doesn’t get their hearts racing, the fact it sits right beside the ever-popular Currumbin Lagoon will.

Along with the central pirate ship climbing fort, crows nest lookouts, treasure chests, and rowboat, kids will also love the bike and scooter paths that circle the park. This epic Gold Coast playground also offers fun play equipment such as a flying fox, spinning globe, and hammocks. For parents, the soft fall base, shade sails, covered picnic tables, and nearby café make it the ideal family destination for a day out.

After the kids have tired themselves on the playground, Currumbin Lagoon is the perfect place to cool down. With safe, shallow waters for little ones and stand-up paddle boarding options for older kids, is it little wonder that Palm Beach Parklands sits at the top of our list of the best seaside playgrounds on the Gold Coast?

Country Paradise Parklands | Nerang https://brisbanekids.com.au/country-paradise-parklands-nerang/ https://brisbanekids.com.au/country-paradise-parklands-nerang/#respond Mon, 16 Oct 2023 04:24:49 +0000 https://brisbanekids.com.au/?p=323026 Country Paradise Parklands playground in Nerang is a delightful blend of traditional country charm and innovative playground designs. Having secured the Playspace Award for QLD in 2022, this hidden gem offers a refreshing hinterland escape for families on the Gold Coast.

Country Paradise Parklands Playground

Tower and water tank tunnel and ramp at Country Paradise Parklands in Nerang.

At the heart of Country Paradise Parklands lies its stunning 11.5m windmill* centrepiece and 2-level slide, accessible via a water-tank tunnel and suspension bridge – drawing in families with the promise of playful adventures.

A comprehensive play area is offered, equipped with an assortment of play equipment which caters to various age groups, ensuring all kids, regardless of age, have an engaging experience.

One of the standout features that particularly caught our attention was the dedicated section for young toddlers. Thoughtfully designed, this space ensures the youngest visitors have an area tailored just for them.

Toddler play area with shade sails at Country Paradise Parklands in Nerang.

Imagine a completely miniature-sized play environment where everything is reachable and navigable by tiny hands and feet. From tunnels and slides to climbing walls, swing bridges, and a play hut – it’s a haven for toddlers, giving them both a sense of independence and security in a space crafted to their size.

Beyond the toddler zone, older kids are treated to a John Deere tractor-themed play area. This delightful space is accentuated with an enclosed curly slide, viewing bubbles, climbing rope, and wheels that beckon kids for an imaginative play. The farm animal spring rockers provide added fun, enhancing the rural charm of the playground.

Suspension bridge at Country Paradise Parklands in Nerang.

A significant point for parents to note is the wooden suspension bridge leading to the windmill tower. While it undeniably adds to the adventurous allure of the park, the spacing of its steps may pose a challenge for younger children. The steps are relatively wide-set, therefore parents should closely supervise their kids, especially the little ones, when crossing this bridge.

The playground also incorporates a playful in-ground trampoline, merging the thrill of jumping with the safety of its ground-level design, making it enjoyable for both children and adults.  Meanwhile, the sandpit with log stepping stones and a log balance track beckons those looking for tactile play.

Water play in the playground at Country Paradise Parklands in Nerang.

While the playground boasts a variety of features, the water play section was somewhat underwhelming. At first glance, the two water pumps and surrounding creek bed hint at interactive water fun, but the reality is a bit disappointing. The water play lacks the expected dynamic interaction, with water simply emptying out into a creek bed without much engagement.

Note – at time of writing in September 2023, the top of the windmill was out for repair

Imagination Factor at Country Paradise Parklands

Swings and tractor fort at Country Paradise Parklands in Nerang.

Country Paradise Parklands ignites children’s creativity, transporting them to scenes of rural life and farm adventures. The diverse play structures encourage tales of navigating creek beds, overseeing vast farmlands from the windmill tower, and lively farm activities such as riding in tractors and herding wildlife. It’s a setting where everyday play seamlessly morphs into imaginative farm life stories.

Accessibility at Country Paradise Parklands

Picnic shelters near playground at Country Paradise Parklands in Nerang.

While Country Paradise Parklands boasts a wealth of amenities, a slight inconvenience is the placement of the toilets—requiring a short trek across a road, albeit still within the Parklands, and about 100m from the playground.

However, compensating for this are ample designated parking spaces right by the playground. Additionally, the park offers numerous spots for group activities, from shaded picnic shelters to a spacious grassy oval, ensuring a comfortable experience for visitors.

Country Paradise Parklands Features

  • Unfenced playground
  • Toilets

About Country Paradise Parklands

Country Paradise Parklands sign.

The parklands flourish under the dedicated care of the volunteer-driven Nerang Country Paradise Association, though the City of Gold Coast oversees the playground and toilets. Within these grounds, visitors can discover a community garden, the Men’s Shed, the Sheila Shack, and Healing Hooves —a heartwarming program that rehabilitates rescued horses, giving them a newfound life as therapy animals for both children and adults.

For those seeking a venue within the parklands, there are several rentable spaces tailored for private occasions which can be booked online. Notably, The Playhouse stands out as an ideal location for children’s birthday celebrations or other special events. With a rental rate of just $100 for 3 hours, it’s quite affordable!

What We Thought of Country Paradise Parklands

Roller slide from water tank at Country Paradise Parklands in Nerang.

Our experience at Country Paradise Parklands was a pleasant surprise. The harmony of Country Paradise Parklands’ rural ambiance amidst the Gold Coast hinterlands provided a refreshing contrast we didn’t realise we needed. It’s hard to say whether our favourite part of the visit was the roller slide off the water tank tunnel or getting to see the neighbouring horses and ponies up close.

How to Get to Country Paradise Parklands

Pay attention when turning off the main road, as the playground isn’t directly visible. Look for the small, wooden ‘Country Paradise Parklands’ sign at the entry.

Best playgrounds on the Gold Coast

Palm Beach Parklands

Re-opening mid-2022 after a major refurbishment, this nautical-themed playground is a destination Gold Coast playground like no other. It is sometimes referred to as Pirate Park. While this easily made the best playgrounds on the Gold Coast list, we suggest this might be the best!

There is plenty of opportunity for sand and water play and relaxing beside Currumbin Creek. A tasty café is located on site and plenty of shady spots for picnics, so long visits at this playground are doable.

Toilets, showers and change rooms are nearby and as kilometres of walking tracks. Palm Beach Parklands is close to the creek, so extra care should be taken with young children.

If you visit during the summer, an inflatable aqua park is often set up on the beach and is ideal for older children and adults (fees apply).

Alternatively, a shaded swimming enclosure can be found on the beach for those looking for a less active option to get wet. A café, toilets and plenty of picnic spots mean you can spend all day at the Broadwater Parklands, knowing everyone will be entertained and well-fed.

Playground features: Partially fenced playground, jumping pillow, water play area, pedal monorail, Liberty swing, slides, climbing equipment, adjacent to beach, BBQ, picnic tables, café and toilets.

Inclusive Playgrounds: Fun for All Abilities

Kurrawa All Abilities playground is one of the best all-abilities playgrounds on the Gold Coast and in South East Queensland and the best park to bring a child who uses a wheelchair. This inclusive playground was co-designed with Gold Coast City Council co-designed and Disability Services Queensland.

  • Kurrawa All Abilities playground is fenced. We especially appreciated that the gate system is the same as pool fencing, making it inaccessible to kids and self-closing. One of the biggest challenges we see with fenced playgrounds is that parents will prop open the gate which cannot happen here.
  • The playground equipment is linked by wide wheelchair-accessible pathways.
  • There are 3 sand tables at Wheelchair height.
  • The playground is covered in shade sails.
  • The undersea zone is also wheelchair accessible with all the submarine controls at chair height.
  • A liberty swing and sway bridge are all-inclusive features of this all-abilities Gold Coast playground.
  • The accessible toilets include an accessible change area with an adult-sized (adjustable) change area bench and hoist.
  • access to the change area including bench and hoist is made via a Master Locksmith Access Key

Picnic Areas and BBQ Facilities: Enjoy a Family Day Out

The best part of all the best playgrounds on the Gold Coast is that they generally feature BBQ facilities and nearly always offer sufficient greenspace for a family picnic. If you want to know if a particular Gold Coast park offers BBQs and toilets, just head to the specific review on the Brisbane Kids website. In Queensland Australia electric BBQs in public parks are generally free for community use. If there is a dollar cost, we will also mention this in our detailed park reviews.

Playgrounds with Water Features

FAQ about the best Best Playgrounds on the Gold Coast

Why are these the best playgrounds on the Gold Coast?

After visiting a lot of Gold Coast playgrounds, we asked our kids what they thought were the best playgrounds on the Gold Coast. As parents, we made sure they included facilities like toilets so the whole family is able to enjoy the experience.

Does it cost money to visit the best playgrounds on the Gold Coast

No! Community parks are free in Australia. You only pay entry to commercial theme parks like Dream World etc.

What else can we do on the Gold Coast other than playgrounds?

  • Visit the beach (it’s a no brainer). Our favourite beaches for kids are Currumbin Creek and Rock Pools and Tallebudgera Creek (and beach).
  • Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary is a great place to take visitors. You can feed the rainbow lorikeets twice a day (without having to pay for entry to the sanctuary). Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary also boasts a high ropes course that takes kids (and adults) through the sanctuary via the trees.
  • Check out local events happening at HOTA which is the Gold Coasts’ main cultural centre.

Peninsula Playground at the Broadwater Parklands https://brisbanekids.com.au/peninsula-playground-at-the-broadwater-parklands/ https://brisbanekids.com.au/peninsula-playground-at-the-broadwater-parklands/#respond Sun, 11 Jun 2023 00:49:36 +0000 https://brisbanekids.com.au/?p=312720 Located on the northern end of sunny Southport is a mega playground with all the wow factor to make it feel right at home in the theme park capital of Australia. The Peninsula Playground Broadwater Parklands is a spectacular addition to the Gold Coast’s growing list of must-visit playgrounds.

Peninsula Playground – Broadwater Parklands

Peninsula Playground is situated on prime waterfront real estate with uninterrupted views over the dazzling Gold Coast Seaway. This $5 million adventure playground is jam-packed with modern inclusions like in-ground trampolines, water play, rock climbing walls, multiple slides and a topical focus on ocean preservation with sea life features and facts found throughout.

Little girl jumping on in-ground trampoline with playground in the background at Peninsula Playground.

The main centrepiece is a gigantic, spiral activity tower which, from a distance, looks more like a trendy art sculpture than a playground and will have the kids pleading with you to pull the car over.

Inside the tower is an intricate maze of cargo netting, platforms and rope tunnels leading upwards to a massive tube slide which snakes back down the structure’s core. Its twisted, tornado like design is full of challenging climbs making it probably most suitable for children four years old and above. It can be accessed via an equally hair-raising netted sky walk or by a platform about half way up the tower.

Tunnels, skywalk and other play equipment at Peninsula Playground.

If your little people prefer to have the sand between their toes then there are dozens of ground level activities to keep Brisbane Kids engaged for hours. There are big, concrete peek-a-boo tunnels adorned with bright sea creatures, a boat with pretend shop front, large disc spinner and mini diggers to utilise the playground’s mostly sandy base.

There’s also a swing bay with water views and a harnessed, adaptive swing. Further exploration also reveals little surprises like interactive games, musical instruments and climbable dinosaur eggs which will certainly appeal to the toddler audience.

Two swings by the water at Peninsula Playground.

Nearby shelters and BBQs offer the perfect picnic setting while the playground itself it well-shaded from the hot Gold Coast sun. Also, bring your frisbees, kites and footy’s as the nearby grassy field provides ample space to stretch those legs and burn off some energy.

Peninsula Playground Imagination Factor

Sand digging today at Peninsula Playground.

Peninsula Playground provides the perfect space for little imaginations to run wild with its eye catching design that mimics the curves and waves of the nearby water. Its ocean theme naturally lends itself to imaginary games of treasure hunting and pirate ship sailing alongside the water taps and playable boat.

The large variety of equipment provides endless opportunities for exploration and allows children of all ages and abilities to immerse themselves in play. The height of the main activity tower also introduces the concept of risky play while also encouraging collaborative interactions between children and their adults.

Peninsula Playground Accessibility

Views of the water and pathways at Peninsula Playground.

The play space at Peninsula Playground is split over two levels with stairs providing the quickest access between the top and bottom sections. The halfway entry point to the tower can be reached via a concrete path which travels behind the playground connecting the swings to the shelters. Accessible toilets are about 200 metres from the playground in the nearby Northern Pavilion.

Peninsula Playground features

  • Unfenced playground
  • Accessible toilets
  • 90% shade sail covering
  • Sand and rubber bases
  • Multi-level activity tower with mega slide
  • In-ground trampolines
  • Child-operated water play

What We Thought of Peninsula Playground

Little girl playing with water pump at Peninsula Playground.

Did someone say destination playground? We think you’ll agree Peninsula Playground is one of the best playgrounds on the Gold Coast, and its sheer scale and amount of detail is sure to impress the whole family.

On our visit we saw lots of new friends helping each other through the tricky tower which was heart-warming to see. Parents and carers, be prepared to jump in there yourselves as small legs might find parts of the playground difficult to navigate. You will also need to be mindful of water safety as there is no barrier between the playground and the adjacent seaway.

How to Get Here

Peninsula Playground is located at the intersection of Marine Parade and Smith Street at Broadwater Parklands North, Southport QLD 4215.

Broadwater Parklands

monorail and scenic reserve

The play area at Broadwater Parklands is suited to children of all ages, with toddlers well catered for. The shallow water play area, complete with sprinklers, waterfalls and a splash pool, is popular for little ones to splash about it.

Children learning to navigate wheels will love zipping around the mini-traffic track, or for a more structured ride, can go on the pedal-powered monorail (smaller children may need someone with longer legs to help pedal). This playground is only partially fenced and near a beach and carparks, so always exercise caution with young children.

Ronnie Long Park

ronnie long park gold coast, Best Toddler Playgrounds on the Gold Coast:

Located next to the Tallebudgera Surf Club, Ronnie Long Park provides a colourful, Surf Lifesaver-themed playground for families to enjoy when visiting the Gold Coast. This partially fenced playground is divided into two areas, with one area particularly wonderful for toddlers. Featuring a smaller climbing frame with a slide, swings, and merry-go-round, toddlers will enjoy using their imagination and energy as they climb, swing and slip on the equipment.

The adjacent green space, toilets, Surf Club and beach invite families to linger longer as they bask in the beauty of this beachside setting.

Pratten Park

One of the best toddler playgrounds on the Gold Coast, this beachside park has plenty to offer toddlers and their families, including a super cool pedal-powered monorail. While the park is not fenced, the monorail encircles the playground, providing a boundary of sorts, but care should be taken to avoid little ones escaping. Equipment suitable for toddlers includes slides, climbing opportunities, a small flying fox, a merry-go-round and other fun animals and boats to play on.

When you and your toddler tire of fun in the playground, head to the nearby patrolled beach to cool off and build sandcastles. BBQs and picnic tables are located by the park, so bring a snag to throw on the BBQ or have a picnic while enjoying the great outdoors on the Gold Coast.

Why it’s one of the Best Toddler Playgrounds on the Gold Coast: Unlike some of the other bigger playgrounds on the Gold Coast, Pratten Park is smaller and less overwhelming for smaller kids. Despite its size, it still comes equipped with a huge variety of toddler-suited play equipment. Plus its at the beach!

Features: Unfenced playground, partially shaded, small fort, pedal monorail, small flying fox, spring rockers, swings, slides, adjacent to beach, BBQs, picnic tables and accessible toilets.

In addition to the nautical-themed playground, the parklands boast kilometres of walking tracks, picnic areas, a lovely cafe and access to the calm waters of Currumbin Creek.

Palm Beach Parklands is an impressive Gold Coast playground, boasting a new pirate ship play structure with various nautical-themed play equipment from crow nests to basket swings, telescopes and hammocks.

Watch your kids’ faces light up as you turn into the car park and they see the immense play structures.

You may also like to pack scooters or bikes for the paths around the playground area.

For older kids or teens, the playground overlooks the tranquil Currumbin Creek (also known as Currumbin Lagoon), which is a popular place to enjoy stand-up paddle boarding or kayaking. So throw in the water toys too!

Imagination factor at Palm Beach Parklands

With the park’s location right on the banks of Currumbin Creek, kids can pretend they’re pirates, sailors or any other nautical-themed character.

To aid their imaginative play there are toy cannons, treasure chests, maps and a row boat. Children can keep watch from the 7-metre high crow’s nest tower, whizz down the eight-metre slide or play peek-a-boo through the port holes.

On the shores of Currumbin Creek, there is the opportunity for plenty of sand play too. Throw in a bucket and spade to extend the play, and the kids will never want to leave. When hunger strikes, either the sandy shores or the immaculately kept grassy areas are the perfect place for a pirate picnic.

Accessibility

The good news is that Palm Beach Parklands is both wheelchair and pram accessible, including along the flat walking tracks and boardwalks through the bush and mangroves.

There are accessible toilets on-site and virtually no slope down to the water. For anyone that is wheelchair-bound, it’s a very pleasant spot to sit with a tea, coffee or hot chocolate and enjoy the ambience of nature.

There is an excellent cafe at the parklands – Dune Cafe – serving delicious breakfasts, morning tea, lunches, coffee, cold drinks and hot chips. However, if you’d prefer to bring your own, there are barbecues, shaded picnic tables and chairs, rubbish bins and water fountains.

The playground has shade sails to dull the worst Queensland sun and plenty of trees, but you must still wear suncream; we felt like this playground is best visited in the morning and afternoon when the sun isn’t at its peak. In addition to toilets, there are changing rooms and showers, in case your kids go for a dip in the water.

Because of this playground’s proximity to water, we recommend adult supervision of children at all times. There are no lifeguards at this location.

Ronnie Long Park is split into two main zones – the tower and transport zones.  The tower structure is impressively big with different slides off each end, climbing walls, fireman poles and spirals, multiple platforms and a maze built in underneath.

The other section of the playground features a smaller climbing frame with slide, a plane / dune buggy / vehicle of your imagination on a sandy base and two swings on soft fall making this a very toddler friendly playground. There’s also a net swing and rope merry go round in this section and soft fall underfoot.

The surf lifesaver theming is consistent throughout the playground, with red and yellow boards, lifeguards wearing caps and looking through binoculars, flags, paddles and surf safety signs all featuring.  From the top of the play structure, your kids can see a real lifeguard tower, the beach and the ocean.

It is is a popular play area that is easily viewed from the surf club deck and outdoor area, making it a great option for a casual weekend lunch, or somewhere to let off some steam after visiting the beach before grabbing a coffee and piling in the car to head back to Brisbane. It is also well shaded and there are toilet facilities next to the park. There is ample greenspace adjacent to the playground for a picnic rug or a game of ball.

The best part of Ronnie Long Playground is it’s proximity to the very popular Tallebudgera Creek, offering calm water for families with young families.

Imagination factor

The surf life saving theme lends itself to imagination play of rescues in the “ocean”.

Accessiblity

There isn’t anything particularly on offer that is accessible as such, although the surrounding concrete paths are flat and allow for both wheelchair and pram access. While the playground is partially fenced, little ones will still require supervision as the play space is next to a carpark.
