Cilento Park is a playground and forested bush walk which is a hidden gem tucked down a side street close to the Nambour Hospital. There is a lovely little playground and a fantastic picnic lawn, barbecue and toilet facilities, but what sets this park apart is a true hidden gem – there’s a short rainforest walking track that loops around past a beautiful waterfall and plunge pool.
Cilento Park
This park hides a wonderful 800 metre long bushwalking track through the rainforest and past a waterfall and plunge pool, before looping back around and up to the opposite side of the park. It’s an absolutely beautiful little walk, suitable for beginners including steady preschoolers.
It is unpaved and requires some careful negotiation in some areas (jumping across rocks) where it may be slippery so unfortunately would not be suitable for wheelchairs or prams.
There are a multitude of trees and birdlife in the rainforest, and if you were lucky (and quiet) you might be able to spot a few different types of birds and animals. Please note that the pool at the bottom of the falls is unfenced so younger kids will need to be closely supervised.
Like any creek in Australia, it is important to note that swimming is an activity that is best considered after considerable rain fall to ensure things are clean and washed out and that there is actual flowing water.
There are rocks around the pool at the base of the waterfall offering a lovely place to stop and rest before walking back up to the park.In warmer months visitors can be found swimming and splashing in the pool at the base of the falls. You might like to pack snacks or a picnic (especially if you’re walking with younger Brisbane Kids) before continuing back up to the park, but if you do please remember to take any rubbish with you.
The playground is basic but clean, fun and in good condition. There are swings, a small climbing play structure with monkey bars and a slide and bouncing rockers. The playground is situated in a large sloped lawn area that would be ideal for picnics and there are also electric barbecues, covered table areas and toilet facilities.
Cilento Park – Imagination Factor
The track through the rainforest leads kids to believe they’re great explorers discovering new tracks, birds or plants for the first time. It is a fantastic adventure for budding botanists and birdwatchers or any kids with an affinity for nature and energy to burn. In the warmer months swimming in the pool below the falls is an option that might excite older trekkers. The lawn area is a great spot for a picnic or lawn games for older kids with the playground providing plenty of entertainment for younger ones.
Cilento Park features
Cilento Park is well worth adding to your Sunshine Coast bucket list and would make an ideal first bushwalk for Brisbane Kids. It doesn’t have the capacity like Kondalilla Falls but it’s much more accessible for little legs to reach the end waterfall and sometimes, just seeing a waterfall is all we need to lift our spirits.
The playground and park facilities are a great place to meet with friends or family for a picnic or barbecue before or after walking to the waterfall, which really is the highlight of this park. It can be slippery in wet conditions and some parts of the track may be subject to flooding, so please use caution and pay attention to weather conditions when planning your visit.
